From the outside this cafe looks like a cheap, tasteless place to eat. But once inside eating - what a great place! The staff were very pleasant and the fish and chips were awesome!

Sorry, I know everyone raves about this place, but I really don't know why! Fish was nice but very expensive and small pieces, and chips weren't anything to get excited about. People with allergies should also be aware that their batter is NOT dairy free.

We also found this café by chance after walking past many coffee shops offering standard fare. The lunch special on a chalkboard outside & looked appealing so in we went for a look. Seeing a lot of locals in there as well as tourists was good to see. There was a special on 6 Bluff oysters and we had 3... More

Stopped in for Gluten Free Fish and Chips. However, It was prepared in the same oil as the regular battered fish. Served with homemade french fries that were very good. Quick service. Nothing fancy in the way of atmosphere but glad that we came for lunch.

What a great find this was, there wasn't too much choice near my hotel, but I am so glad I chose it. Quick and friendly service, enjoyed GF Blue Cod. Best fish and chips I have had in years.

Came on this place by chance after passing by a lot of noisy places around the Octagon. It looks simple from the outside but offered oysters so thought it worth a look. The range of fish offered was impressive and proved delicious for the basis of fish and chips. Moist fish, light crispy batter. Chips a bit chewy perhaps. Staff... More

I went in for an evening meal, hoping for seafood chowder, but this wasn't available. As moki was on the menu, I chose 2 fillets of that as I love and cook moki at home. While the batter was perfect - crisp and golden - the fish was disappointing, as it had that tang of fish that's a few days... More

This is a basic looking cafe, but don't let that deceive you. We came in at lunch time and the service was faultless and the fish and chips were really delicious. We came in later the next day, close to closing time and the service and food were not as good, but still very good, I think the staff wanted... More

This Dunedin identity delivered as always. Classic blue cod fish and chips, moist and delicious, with slaw, accompanied by bread and butter. It's like stepping back to my 1950s childhood, and great value for money. Don't miss it.

This is the best place I have had whitebait fritters. Served with bread and butter and a lovely cold drink. So yummy. Worth the trip from Australia to taste. Well done Best Cafe. Great value for money. Considering we had tried this iconic dish at Auckland ackoroa and Wellington too.

Description
Established in 1932 the "Best Cafe" has become a Dunedin icon. It has been through world war II and the great depression and has changed very little over the last 80 years it has been trading. My wife and I are privileged to be its third owners and have fell in love with a piece of Dunedin history. Our aim is to supply a great range of local fresh fish with our hand cut chips, also maintain our reputation as the Best oysters in New Zealand. If you remember the days when you used to get bread and rolled butter at the table as soon as you walked in, with feeds that never left you hungry then you will remember the "Best Cafe"
