We ended up getting three different types of fish because each choice was running out. What the heck? It was 7:00! They also don't do crumbed. And my son ordered Sizzlers, eggs and chips and when we got home there were no eggs. The only redeeming feature was the chips were delicious, if not all small sized. I wouldn't go... More

We found this place whilst visiting Dunedin for the day. From the outside the place looks pretty simple but boy am I glad we tried it. The service was very friendly and attentive. It is also pretty old school with fresh bread and butter being brought to your table. We had the blue eyed cod which like most people reviews... More

A limited review as we all had the blue cod fish and chips and all four of us were very pleased. The place was very busy at lunch, a good sign. So was it the "best" cafe? Maybe.

Don't let appearances fool you. This old school café has fantastic food. We had dinner here and the fish and chips were fantastic. Lovely crisp batter and fantastic chips. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals.

Cruised around NZ, hit Dunedin and found this place, was like walking back in to the 60's. Fish and Chips were excellent, service was great. The only downside, the portion sizes could have been a bit bigger. Highly Recommend!

The cafe was like stepping back in time, vinyl table cloths and crockery of a similar era. Service was prompt, friendly and staff were happy to explain what was what regarding different fish, to those not from NZ. So we ordered blue cod and chips, superb! You won't find much better anywhere. The chips were made there I imagine, reminded... More

Sorry to swim against the tide of opinion, but this was a very average experience and I am very tempted to give only a two star rating. The fish was dry and, without the batter to bulk up its appearance, was of limited quantity. Yes, the girl who served was very friendly but overall the service wasn't exceptional. To be... More

From the outside this cafe looks like a cheap, tasteless place to eat. But once inside eating - what a great place! The staff were very pleasant and the fish and chips were awesome!

Established in 1932 the "Best Cafe" has become a Dunedin icon. It has been through world war II and the great depression and has changed very little over the last 80 years it has been trading. My wife and I are privileged to be its third owners and have fell in love with a piece of Dunedin history. Our aim is to supply a great range of local fresh fish with our hand cut chips, also maintain our reputation as the Best oysters in New Zealand. If you remember the days when you used to get bread and rolled butter at the table as soon as you walked in, with feeds that never left you hungry then you will remember the "Best Cafe"
