Must stop here when visiting the area. Open since 1932, and you can see why. Service is sharp and quick, food came out hot and hmmm good. Fresh fish clearly. Make this. Stop when here and we will return.

Absolutely outstanding! A walk back in time to a simple era where the food was sourced down the road, cooked fresh and delivered with a smile!! The fish was coated in a light tempura style batter and cooked to perfection, the Blue Cod is melt...More

Recently visited and enjoyed the Windows looking onto the street while enjoying fish-n-chips and the local drink, L&P (try it!). Just steps from the train station it is a great place to eat while downtown.

Blue cod bites were amazing. For the price we couldn’t believe how much food we got & this was one of the smaller lunches. The Best cafe certainly lived up to its name.

Chips were piping hot, crispy outsides and fluffy inside. The blue cod bites were excellent value for money. Service was friendly and professional. We were only there for a day, but were delighted with our choice of venue. We would definitely go back if we...More

Very plain and simple. Just great fried fish and chips. You can split a 2 filet plate and get 2 different fish. Friendly staff.

My wife and I were here just for the day. Taxi driver said if you want oysters or fish and chips this is the place. Outstanding food and service for a quirky little cafe. We had 1/2 dozen natural Bluff oysters and 1/2 dozen battered...More

I went for a look due to the good reviews. Yes it’s ok, but I didn’t think it was amazing. 6 oysters and 1 piece of grilled cod with chips and a small salad, 1 small beer and a glass of wine was $65.00. This...More

Hi Dick, Thanks for your feedback and we are sorry you found your meal to be pricey. I do recall in fact serving you and just to clarify your bill was $62.50, which I believe to be fairly reasonable when ordering premium items such as...More

Description
Established in 1932 the Best Cafe is a Dunedin icon. It has been through World War II and the Great Depression and has changed very little over the last 85 years it has been trading. I am very lucky to be running a restaurant that was originally started by my great-grandfather and then passed down to his son and family through until the 1980's. The following proprietors kept the traditions alive to maintain the Best Cafe's great reputation. As the proud owner of our old family restaurant my aim is to provide a truly unique dining experience, one where we can provide old fashioned, friendly service alongside a delicious plate of fresh, local seafood, golden hand cut chips and the best Bluff Oysters in New Zealand. If you want to take a trip down Nostalgia Lane and taste some traditional New Zealand fare then this is the place to visit.
