We booked a table at Cafe Rock during our recent trip to Christchurch NZ. Along with our friends we had a very enjoyable evening with excellent food, efficient and friendly service and stunning views of the beach and ocean. Highly recommended.

We enjoyed the pizza, wedges and cold drinks. Nice spot in the sun in Sumner. Pleasant and friendly staff.

Visiting family from U.K. we called in for lunch and it was an awful experience. Firstly there were no smaller options for children which was very surprising given it is right by a beach. The manager (I am assume he was) just told us abruptly there was just what was on menu. So we had to work around it. I... More

My partner and I decided to take a walk into the village for some lunch. It was a lovely day and there were lots of full restaurants so we decided to try this place - mistake. Menu was quite boring and some things were really expensive - nearly $5 for a 250ml coke?! Having waited about 50 minutes for our... More

Hi There Alice, Thank you for your honest review. Very recently (and I mean very recently) our kitchen and management team has gone through a complete overhaul. I would have to agree that our past standards have not been acceptable. We are hoping to turn things around with brand new staff for both front of house and kitchen, and would... More

Wow, would've expected this place to be at least good, given its location but due to poor management obviously, this place was not only filthy but there was only one staff member trying to do everything while "the manager" hid behind his coffee machine making 2 drinks in 20minutes! Sadly due to this the staff were overworked which affected the... More

As a Sumner resident it pains me to write a bad review of a local restaurant. A re-launch as a pizza restaurant prompted a visit to The Rock. With a wonderful location on The Esplanade this place should be a winner. However execution lets it down badly. On a Tuesday evening there were only three other diners in addition to... More

Hi there Seismicscot, Thank you for your review, I would agree that our previous standards have been absolutely unacceptable. Recently we've had a complete staff turnover, including management in both kitchen and front of house. I would love to see you back, we have made (and are still making) vast improvements to food quality and in particular our service standards.... More

This is a beautiful location, but hasn't much else going for it. The only person serving ignored us for quite a while, the beer (their 'own' label) was very average and the whole cafe was quite grubby. I'm sure Sumner has much better on offer.

Over an hour for just a bowl of wedges. 2 or three people got their food before us ordered after us. Two of the groups got 3 rounds of drinks before the group infront of us got one. Then after an hour and a half, the waiter came to our table with just a ordinary bowl of fries and said... More

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this cafe. I had beautifully cooked bacon and eggs - the bacon was particularly delicious. It's a great location right by the sea.

Meeting a friend at this cafe we arrived early to have lunch and my daughter and I chose the chicken burger. When it eventually arrived the presentation was nice and came with alll the trimmings but the chicken breast itself while not pink was difficult to cut and rubbery an chewy to eat. We persevered for a while but eventually... More
