Early last year when the reality of Covid was just hitting, I wrote a "Pretend Travel" series for Metro. The concept...How to get an overseas buzz without leaving New Zealand. If I had known about this magical spot I would have definitely have included Hans...Herzog Estate and called the piece The Full Monte-pulciano in Marlborough. The cottage is a small, perfectly abridged collection of life's pleasures; art, antiques, books, wine and, devilishly good complimentary delectables ( need to discover that nut recipe). Vineyard owner, Hans Herzog is not just an inspired winemaker, he also makes a fine breakfast and delivered it personally. The view through the olive trees and over the vines to the snow-capped hills is breathtaking. Having done a daytime lunch/ winery tour, we preferred to stay in the cottage in the evenings and enjoy the wintertime ambiance; the roaring fire and a bottle of Han Herzog's excellent Voigner. We did a tasting in the cellar on our first afternoon and then ventured to the river for a picnic. Next time we are going to use the bikes to explore a bit further as the vineyard is close to many others. Thank you Hans, Therese and all the team especially Lieke. Your wonderful property really made us feel like borders had evaporated and we had been magically transported to another hemisphere. It was a very special stay.More

Thank you very much Sue... It was an honor to have both of you here in these cold winter days and are happy to hear you have become a fan of our Viognier. We look forward to hosting you again!

What a beautiful place. Great to finally see a vineyard with a true vigneron, Hans. The cottage is great. Keely served us breakfast every morning, direclty at the door, and always with smile ! :) The story of this vineyard is incredible and the wine...is definitely one of the best in NZ. Thank you Maria for the visit of the winery and the tasting. Absolutely amazing. Great to see beautiful organic wines, 28 differents grapes varieties that we rarely see here in NZ, the hard work behing that is insane. I am very emotional about the story of Hans and Therese, and what they have built in more than 20 years. I'll come to see you soon on my next visit in Marlborough. Therese, Keely, Maria & Hans, thank you for your hospitality and this great experience. Regards, Cedric & MicaelaMore

Great wine, food and location. Really enjoyed the local wildlife hanging out and as a bonus a chicken cleaned my shoes!

It's 10.30pm on a snowy December 28th in Manchester, England. Marie and I are sitting opposite one another, reminiscing about our visit to the Hans Herzog Estate, which we've just calculated was on 17th February 2020, 315 days ago! The reason for such reminiscences tonight...sits on the table in front of us - an almost empty bottle of Herzog Montepulciano that we have loved drinking tonight as a perfect accompaniment to a wild venison casserole. An amazing red with dark fruity flavours that can match a strong meat but doesn't drown it. Our mini tour of some of the Marlborough vineyards was certainly a memorable dayMore

Unfortunately this was the first stop on a cycling tour. $25 per tasting each, so $50 for a couple to taste wines we did not actually enjoy. Luckily the vineyards that followed were far better. Don't stop here would be my advice.

We stopped here on our wine trail and my husband and I both were not overly impressed with the wine. Especially considering how expensive it was. The venue is very attractive and staff friendly so we did enjoy our visit just not the wine.

Very cute boutique winery with high quality wines and impeccable service. They have a great selection of grape varieties -some of which you might have never heard about but that you will start to love! Overall it was an excellent experience! Nadia was also very...knowledgeable, helpful and extremely kind. Thank you!More

We visited the winery just before the Covid-19 shutdown and it was one of the highlights of our month-long trip to New Zealand. We spent the night in their beautiful Rose Cottage and enjoyed a fabulous dinner in the restaurant. We were almost the only...people there, but they still took excellent care of us and left us with the experience of a lifetime. The food was carefully and creatively prepared and the wine pairings were perfect. Oh, and by the way, the wines are incredible!More

Last and memorable lunch before COVID-19 shut down. We sat in there beautiful garden with ourselves being one of two tables on an otherwise empty bistro we had the chef special three-course meal - it was delicious. We had done wine tasting the day before...and came back for the lunch. The food and the wine was excellent would love to come back again at a happier time when the virus is no longer a concern. Hope all the staff remain safe and are able to get back home.More

The wine at the tasting was delicious but don't expect to get your money's worth... $15 to taste 3 wines is pretty steep compared to everything else around there. The bartender was very friendly.
