My sister and I visited the diner today the costumer service was amazing. The young man that looked after us was very welcoming and funny and efficient. Such a sweetheart and well presented. There was a young girl working that was very lovely interacting with customers and other staff members she was bubbly and pumping out lots of drinks. Ours were delicious. The decor and the restaurant was beautifully set out and the food was very good. however the atmosphere was a bit mixed, the other lady working seemed like she absolutely hated her job and her vibes were very fake and hostile. I think she needs to go on a holiday and lighten up. One bad peice of fruit in the fruit bowl can ruin all of the others and the tone that she spoke to other staff was alarming.

Excellent meal

Liked the American diner decor and loved the food. It was very busy when we visited and so we were offered a seat at the bar, which was fine. I did appreciate being moved to a booth when the diner was less busy though. We were warned our meals would take a while so we ordered the cheesy garlic bread. Although it was more cheesy than garlic, it was still yummy. My main meal was pan fried fish coated in lime polenta with mashed potato and salad. It was delicious. You could get some of the meals as a half meal which is what I did. It was just the right size for me. The waiters and waitresses did a great job serving everyone and hats off to the chefs - I thoroughly enjoyed my meal.

Really cool American themed diner. The staff is very lively attentive, and helpful, and the food came out reasonably quickly. The portion sizes are very big and very well priced. Great experience and I highly recommend

Lunch less than exciting

Went for lunch with my daughter and her family on Saturday January 11th 2020. I've been here before and the food was excellent this time it was very average. My son in laws big breakfast was fine, but my daughters lunch the nachos which she ordered the bean option and as a half serving was very poor. $17 for the half portion and it was that small it could've made it onto the kids menu, she ordered beans and got the beef instead and no jalapenos which are stated on the menu as included. I advised her to send it back but she chose not to as we couldn't wait for a replacement. The children's food was adequate. I didn't order as I'm past getting very underwhelming food and paying good hard earned money for it. Establishments need to up their game as far as I am concerned.

Terrible service, food didn’t make up for it

Terrible place to eat. Service was extremely sarcastic and poor. The waitress Cleary didn’t want to be there and rolled her eyes at any request. I asked for butter for my toast so she came back with a stack of nine and slapped it down. The kumara rostis were very salty, the chef mustn’t have tried that mornings batch as it tasted like the ocean. Will not be returning or recommending anyone to come here when in New Plymouth.

The food here is great but the wait time for food is appalling. We only ordered burgers and fries yet we had to wait 60 mins for it to arrive. During that 60 min wait not one staff member checked in on us which I thought was rubbish service. My daughters meal was ordered without mayo or chutney yet when it arrived it did. Sent it back, came back with chutney all over it. Sent it back again. It was returned each time within 2 mins, yet we had to wait 60 mins for it to be made in the first place. There was a large table which probably contributed to the problem but why a table of 4 with burgers and fries should have to wait for a table of 18 with extensive mains and desserts is beyond me. This is the third time we have been here (my children like the food) and the wait time has been the same every time.

Value and variety

Aside from the very cool decore, the variety and price are a really key point to this spot. Too often cafe breakfast menus are now limited to 4 or 5 options so it was great to have a big mix of breakfast / lunch options. Coffee was ok, food was very nice. The real gem of our experience this morning was our waitress who was very kind and very attentive. Great experience.

If you want some good ol' heart stopping 'American Diner' food you should definitely visit here. Great tasting food and super indulgent shakes. The staff were friendly and provided better table service than I've experienced at some 'fancier' restaurants in Auckland. Bookings recommended as it looks busy.

We visited deluxe diner twice while in New Plymouth, once for lunch and once for dinner. I’d highly recommend this spot for lunch as you can get a great meal that’s good value for money with fantastic service. During dinner they were a lot busier so service wasn’t as great. We were served by 3 different people which I appreciate as they didn’t make us wait while our original waiter was busy, however there were times where 3 girls were talking behind the bar while the sole male server was filling napkin holders, taking payments and taking food to tables. If you want to secure a booth, definitely call to book in advance.

Great Service

Took my American son in law here last night. He said they are some of the best deep fried pickles he’d ever had. Starters came out very quickly. Restaurant filled up but the staff still managed to give us great service throughout the whole experience. Steak was cooked perfectly, burgers were great but the buns didn’t hold together as we ate them, it was almost as though they were stale and fell to pieces. Loaded milkshakes were visually stimulating and were enjoyed by those that had them. Four adults dinned and our meal costed us almost $200, considering it was only burgers and one steak meal, I found this very expensive, and because of this won’t be dinning there again.

Had dinner with friends here before going to see the Festival of Lights. It was a delight is see how they have made this authentic as possible. The quality of food was good with great presentation. Attention to detail was great and you just sat there and soaked up the atmosphere. Portions were large typical american style. The waiter and waitresses were attentive and quickly saw to your needs. Its been a long time since I have seen staff clear tables and wipe down table sides and seats and bought a broom out to sweep and I was in hospitality for years as a Head Chef.Even though this place was busy it was well oiled machine. Pays to book here.Book a booth by a window.For the experience it was marvellous and left us smiling for days after. This is a must if you have children and prices were very reasonable.Would we go again....Absolutely.

It must be under new management? The service staff fantastic. The food is definitely not how it use to be..Over priced under loved food...who ever is in the kitchen needs a lesson on the basics. Can't believe that you ( the owner) would even let this food go past the pass. Certainly wouldn't recommend it and such a shame as the food use to be absolutely beautiful. Clear to say we won't be back.We do hope you do something about this & not just blow it off. Good luck.

We visit Deluxe Diner every time we're in New Plymouth, and made sure to book in advance for a recent trip. Just as well we did, as the place was packed and they were turning away many groups at the door. Because it was so busy we expected a wait for our meal, however, it ended up being 1.5 hours as our docket had been misplaced. They were very apologetic and offered either deserts or our drinks free of charge. Putting things right is what counts so this was much appreciated and it wouldn't put us off coming again next time.

Good food, good service

The waitress was very helpful. She answered questions about the food and took note of our particular requests. I had the fish burger. I had asked the waitress whether the burger would be a reasonable meal alone, without fries. She said it would, and I agreed. It was just right for me (a middle-aged woman). The mayonnaise in the burger wasn't sweet, as it often is. I don't like it sweet, so that was good. I also had a latte. It was unusually nice but not very big. For about the same price I could have had a bottomless cup of filter coffee, so the options are there. My partner had eggs on toast and string fries. He was also happy. The toast looked wholesome and substantial.

Not deluxe and very disappointing

To start off with a good note, the service was impeccable and the ladies working there were efficient and polite. This said, the food was very disappointing, poor quality and bland (if you can't taste anything else than the barbecue or ketchup sauce, it means the rest is tasteless), my kids were very put off by their food and I don't blame them, I wouldn't want to eat what they had either (burger and BLT). The drinks were also quite warm and would have maybe needed a separate glass with ice. The fact that the food is so bad means that it turns out to be quite expensive for what it is.I don't think I'll be going back to these American diner-type of restaurants. I feel like I'm paying for a decor I don't really care for and I expect food in a restaurant to be tasty and good quality at a minimum.
