I've just had one of the best breakfasts in the country (I travel a lot). I asked them to leave off the tomato because I don't like them, and they gave me an extra kransky instead. The scrambled egg was cooked perfectly making the whole breakfast delicious. I wish I'd found this place sooner.

A quirky welcoming place with something for everyone and room to stay and enjoy it
There is an interesting range of baked goods and plenty of ready to eat options on display

This bustling cafe is the real deal - great kiwi food in nostalgic bustling decor. We went twice during the week we visited New Plymouth and both times were delighted with the food. We ordered off the menu but the counter food looked fantastic too. Make sure to leave room after your meal for one of their delicious cakes.

The menu and food looked really good. Unfortunately we didn’t get to try it as we received some of our table’s food after waiting 1.5 hours and then they forgot about two of our breakfasts so we missed out. We didn’t even receive an apology. It was busy but it was unacceptable.

Came here for breakfast this morning and couldn't fault it was probably the best breakfast I have had in a cafe for years.
Hubbie had the savory French toast which comes with buttermilk chicken, spicy mayo, parmesan and rocket which he demolished and declared fab.
I had the hummus, bacon, poached egg , dukkah and rocket on sourdough (I dropped the fresh tomato) this was delicious as well.
Coffee was great, service friendly and fast - can't wait to come back on our next visit to Taranaki.

I was really hoping for more after all the amazing reviews! I purchased chocolate fudge and a Cheesecake to takeaway. The chocolate fudge was inedible and I had to throw it away, it wasn't set googy and so full of raises.
Maybe the experience in store would have been more pleasant.

To start with the coffee was excellent.
A friendly lady served us and a friendly lady bought out our food.
But that was where the good ended.
- the savoury brioche has been microwaved so long that it was burning hot and floppy.
The lady who bought out the coffee was the sloppy part of the experience- she called out “Large flat white, cappuccino” and plonked then down on the table , spilling one of the drinks and walking away. I said hang on I didn’t order a cap, I ordered a soy fw in a cap cup is that what it was? Yip she said , and walked off.
Damn rude - nothing said about the coffee she slurped onto the saucer.

The menu is extensive. I had savory French toast with fried chicken, bacon and egg. Frends had mushrooms on toast or eggs bene served on potato rosti. All groaned with happiness. Cabinet selection is huge and varied. Also sweet cabinet. Decor is mix of 60s retro to quirky. So much to look at. Warning it's a very popular local so book a table if you can because it's a great place to pass the day away.Staff are lovely and take time to engage. Highly recommend

Went at lunch time. We had 2 fizzy drinks, 2 small portions of tasteless salad, a burrito and ciabatta sandwich. Food was average. Bill was almost 50 bucks. Don't think it was good value for money. Won't be going back.

Friendly staff even though a busy place. Nice vibe and the food is delicious. Federal has the best beans I’ve tasted in a long time - just spicy enough - and the eggs were done to perfection as was the mushroom medley. Highly recommended for consistent quality meals.

Looks nothing much on the outside but the inside is great - a mixture of shabby chic and the fifties! Breakfast and lunch are served here. Lovely display of salads, filled sandwiches and plenty of yummy cakes! We really enjoyed our lunch here and will go back for another meal tomorrow! It was rather noisy because it was lunchtime and lots of people. Lovely staff!

not a huge menu for breakfast but there's something for everyone, the cabinet food looked amazing, huge selection of delicious looking foods. Partner had creamy mushrooms which he couldn't finish and I had eggs benedict with bacon, also a huge serve. The coffee was great and the service was fast and efficient. Would highly recommend.

Went to this old fave whilst in town visiting family. Didn’t even get to try anything to review. We sat at an unreserved table, just as someone had left. Only a minute later was asked to move because one of the staff had advised people sitting outside that they could sit there. We had young children with us and were expected to move outside next to a busy road with a toddler who could run into traffic at any minute (because those with toddlers know these things happen to even the best behaved toddlers). Needless to say, we didn’t stay. Thanks Federal Store, with that attitude towards patrons, we won’t be back. You USED to be the best in town

This was my first time visiting, and it will be my last.
There are many nicer places that are better value.
I found the food bland, and overpriced.
The staff, stood with their arms folded, and when i told her what i wanted i could see she was even taking notice, she was looking at something on the other side of the restaurant.
Maybe my expectation were high due to its apparent popularity, but it didnt measure up at all.

We were not there long, but long enough to appreciate good service and good food. Its a shabby chic very busy restaurant. Would love to have had dinner here, maybe another trip!
Staff very helpful and patient especially with the inquisitive part of our group who wanted to see every thing before they ordered, there`s one in every group. None the less the whole experience was worth it!
