About
David Thompson’s casual, fun and accessible Thai street food restaurant, Long Chim opened its doors at the end of 2015. Bookings can be made for lunch and dinner and there is always availability for walk-ins. Located in the basement of the State Building on the corner of St George Terrace and Barrack Street, the 190-seat restaurant has a large open-plan kitchen, cocktail bar and a mix of intimate dining alcoves, communal style tables and counter seats. Long Chim means to ‘come and taste’. The restaurant’s fast service style combines with the sounds of clashing woks and the beating rhythm of the pestle as it hits the mortar. It’s a kind of music that leads you to laugh a little louder, stay a little longer and try something new each time. Drop in for lunch, a snack and drink, or stay for dinner and work your way through the menu, with a selection of Thai street food options including noodles, curries, stir-fries, deep-fried and grilled dishes. Signature dishes include crunchy school prawns with herbs, shallots and chilies; beef skewers with cumin, coriander and turmeric; or for something more substantial, sour orange curry of fish or minced beef with chillies, garlic, holy basil and fried egg. We also have our "maa long chim" menu, which means to come, sample and taste, and comprises of a selection of Long Chim’s best dishes, and is available lunch and dinner.

I've consciously tried to avoid Long Chim while in Bangkok. I have read and I like David Thomson's cookbooks and have tried some of the recipes. I like watching him cook on TV. But when in Bangkok, there are so many local restaurants and so much street food to be had.
But here in Perth, while there are some good Thai restaurants, Long Chim fills a gap in fine Thai food. And while it's not cheap, it's very good.
We took advantage of the $25 menu that lets you choose from a list of main dishes and a drink (alcoholic and non-alcoholic).
Unfortunately, Boat Noodles were not available and we decided to try the orange sour fish curry and the Thai laksa.
The curry was brilliant. Tangy and just spicy enough, although some might find it slightly too hot, with firm pieces of fish, tomatoes, and onions. It's served with rice.
The laksa was a revelation. I am familiar with laksa from Singapore, rich with coconut milk, and the one from Penang, tangy and sour (from tamarind).
This version, there are many in Thailand which is a big country, was probably from the south and features a peanut-based sauce served with rice vermicelli, young corn, and tofu. It was unexpected and unusual but also tasty.
A word about out waitperson, a very pleasant and well-informed young man who helped us with our selection. Good waitstaff make a big difference to a restaurant.
We had a glass of red and white blends, apologies for not remembering the name, but it was Australian and very decent.
We tend to take public transport when dining in the city but paid parking can usually be found. The restaurant is accessible to wheelchairs and credit cards are accepted.

We were very excited to catch up with friends in a restaurant amid all the COVID19 concerns. Long Chim's is always fabulous and they did not disappoint with a set menu for an incredibly reasonable rate per person. The food was delicious and so plentiful. I would have been very happy with just the entrees but there was great selection of mains as well and the Thai tea ice cream was another dimension of delicious. Stand out for me was the Sweet and Sour Snapper Soup. It was filled with complex Thai flavours and had a very favourable kick of chilli. A tast sensation but not for the faint hearted.
As always the staff were friendly and respectful and the whole table had a wonderful time with promises to catch up again soon.

Food was amazing Crunchy Prawns entree was super fresh and the herbs accompanying them made the dish something special.
The only down side was the serving of rice for the two of us was a little small considering it cost $8, rice is not expensive to buy, cook and serve.
Wine list is a little pricey and could do with some more cheaper options.

I cannot see what the fuss is about.
The restaurant has a limited menu; the dishes are not particularly good - and it is expensive.
We had a green chicken curry, which was not memorable. Rather than ask "How spicy", we were told that it came "spicy". Wine was relatively expensive.
Would not return.

Hi x229,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We always appreciate honest feedback as it allows to continuously grow and improve.
We work really hard to provide an authentic thai street food experience and am sorry to hear you were disappointed with the overall experience, as the feedback given is not what we would expect from a venue of our caliber.
Our curry pastes already have the chilli / spicy components added prior to service, so we are unable to amend dishes to suit personal preference. Instead the dish should be balanced with sweet, sour, salty and spicy. If we offered a mild option with this dish, it would dilute the product and the quality.
We have also reviewed our wine list and feel the pricing is in line with the quality and range of the product on offer. If there was a specific style or variety you would like to see listed, or owuld like to further discuss any of the issued raised, please do not hesitate to contact me directly on katie.chan@longchim.com
Kind regard,
Katie

For the price that we were paying, I would expect a better presentation rather than a just 'plopping' the food on the table. Served as if we were eating by the street. Pretty sure other Thai restaurants in Perth wouldve done a better job for a more reasonable price. Taste wise was just so-so and nothing wow abt. Have tasted far better than this in Perth.

Hi there Jessemyw,
Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your recent visit to Long Chim Perth.
I am sorry to hear that you found the overall experience a disappointing one and will pass on your comments to our culinary team for review.
Long Chim celebrates authentic Thai street food, so we concentrate more in the quality of ingredients and traditional cooking methods rather than presentation as our food is served as it would be on the streets (sans plastic plates and cutlery of course!)
If you would like to further discuss your experience, please do not hesitate to contact us directly on hi@longchimperth.com and we hope to see you again.
Kind regards,
Katie

We have been meaning to come here for ages, probably 2 years, but it always seems to be booked out. Finally I was able to book a table the day before we wanted to go(we are not really book 2 or 3 weeks in advance kind of people). Got there early to indulge in some happy hour cocktails all of which were delicious and well priced at just $12. We then went to our table and decided to order the $65p/p package of food so we could sample a few different dishes. The food was nice but at $130, I’m not sure it was that good. I can go to my local Thai and Vietnamese restaurants and get just as flavoursome food for a lot less money. But I guess $130 is normal(even cheap) for a meal in Perth. The staff were amazing however!! Very attentive, friendly and helpful. It’s actually really rare to get such amazing service in such a busy restaurant!! They are really a credit to this establishment. So overall, great drinks(amazing cocktail menu), fabulous staff, nice food.

Fantastic meals the last couple of times we have been here. Decided we would treat ourselves to a delicious meal for New Years and the seafood set menu here did not disappoint! Never have a eaten a scallop Penang curry like this! Mind blowing flavour I would pay the same price just to eat a giant bowl of this!! The set menu had More than 10 dishes and we had seafood of every variety and all amazing packed full of flavour!
We came a few weeks ago and tasted about 10 of the dishes with friends me again all delicious and pretty reasonable value for 4 people approx $65pp with drinks.
The service on both occasions was excellent very attentive and informative.
Ambience is great as with all venues in the state building you are not disappointed. Looking forward to our next visit!

I last reviewed this restaurant back in 2016 (and that review may as well be this review) and have eaten at Long Chim on a few occasions since. I think Long Chim would have to be the most overrated dining experience in Perth, never have I eaten at a restaurant before where the food is so consistently inconsistent, either a hit or a miss! ... and thus overpriced for the experience. I'd be happy to pay if I knew it would be fabulous every single time, but it's not. The only dish that has been consistently good over several visits has been the fried rice with duck. On this occasion the staff were very attentive, especially the woman front of house (she was great), but the food was at best average. My 19 year old daughter was denied an alcoholic beverage because she had no hard ID, and that was despite both her parents dining with her for her birthday. The Massaman Curry was a miss yet again, the meat wasn't a melt in your mouth experience and the sweet potato was hard to the bite, which is amazing for a curry that should be slow cooked. The Mango Sticky Rice Pudding was too sweet and without any visible coconut milk, but I think the thing that annoyed me the most was the $16 charged for the one scoop of coffee ice-cream that only had a tuile stuck in the top of it. I actually resurrected my account to write this review (I haven't written one for a few years), in all it was a very average experience.

We went for our anniversary dinner. The staff made us feel very special, congratulating us, even giving us a glass of sparkling complimentary. Our waiter was incredible, so friendly, attentive & provided good recommendations. The food itself was amazing, great flavours & good portions. I do enjoy plates that are designed to share so that I can try a few different dishes. The vibe is quite relaxed & interior really nice. Highly recommended!

Loved the decor of Long Chim as we entered, especially the wall art. As a couple, we ordered the fish cakes and spicy pork with rice cake as starters, then the glass noodle salad and beef massaman curry for main course. The food was delicious with amazing flavours and just the right amount of heat. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. I liked that we were offered a taste of the wine we were thinking of ordering by the glass, which doesn’t happen often. This restaurant was recommended to us by a family member and we were very happy that we followed their advice. The only negative was that the small tables are very close together and unfortunately we were seated next to someone with a very loud voice. People need to be mindful in these situations. We still had an enjoyable night as the food was the highlight.

This is set in the basement of the treasury building. They used to have a restaurant at the Crown on the Yarra.
It is set as a casual Thai street cafe, the set menu we had is for $65.00
Coming too $205 with a bottle of wine for two.

Decided to give Long Chim another chance, but let down again. Booked the restaurant a month or so in advance, so timed with a city hotel stay. Took the time to decide in advance what we wanted, and when arrived at around 6.30pm found the main dish I wanted to try they had run out of the sauce, almost left and decided to try some other dishes. Mistake, a vegetable curry & pork sticks (5) and a cider and sparkling water $70- , no value what so ever. Sorry won’t be back, food not up to value, though service was prompt and waitress was very kind.k

My wife and I went to Long Chim on Saturday night for our wedding anniversary as it was a place that we had wanted to visit for a while. Don’t know why we waited so long to go. We had the set menu at $85 ea, in hindsight should have gone the $65 option as the servings were generous. Flavoursome food in every dish, some spicey some mild, but all great. Our waitress was amazing with her knowledge of the food and wine. Thanks for a night to remember and we will be back sooner than later.

We hadn’t been to Long chim in a while (maybe 2 yrs). It never disappoints, the food is fantastic - rich, tasty & not to spicy. The lady servicing us gave great advise (in regards to spiciness) as our friends didn’t like too spicy. Any of the dishes on the menu are very tasty & well presented. The food came out plentiful & we thought it was good value. We arrived 10min early & our table wasn’t ready but we were offered a drink at the bar & offered the wine list, the staff were very chatty & happy to assist. The restaurant was busy but the staff were still very attentive and we would definitely go back without hesitation. Thanks for a lovely evening!!
