Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We went here for the aperitivo yesterday to celebrate my birthday with a group of friends. We were warmly greeted and the experience overall was nice. We were lucky with the weather, this restaurant is quite weather dependent as the inside of the restaurant is...a little tired and dark. The food was ok, not quite as good as previous visits. The standout dish was the aranchini, but we were limited to 1 each. The servings were not especially generous. The chicken main course was quite small, we were cutting the small chicken slices in half to make sure there was enough. The gnocchi was ok, the sauce was watery and quite tasteless. We were the only people in the restaurant and our group was not rowdy. There was hassle ordering drinks as the staff were insisting that people finish the remainder of their spritz (melted ice) before ordering another drink. When I paid the bill they insisted that I pay for 10 people when there was 9 of us. I had mentioned this on arrival, it was my mistake. I wouldn’t have minded to pay the deposit for the extra person, but it felt like an insult to pay for an extra person who was not there to consume anything. Overall I was left feeling like this restaurant may be under new management/ownership. It was enjoyable but not as great as it used to be.More

Lovely location helped by a beautiful night. The service was very good and the wait staff tried very hard. Unfortunately the food was hit and miss and in an effort to set a romantic ambience or perhaps just save the planet there were no lights...so seeing the food was a struggle, thank goodness for mobile phone torches. With respect to the food, the calamari, like the Argus steak, although plentiful, were tough and chewy. The pasta with chicken was over salted and there was only one small piece of chicken. The giant profiterole just a gluggy mess of custard and cream. The highly rated tiramisu average. On the plus, pasta marinara I was told is great. For a romantic dinner on a warm night this is great but don’t expect much from the food.More

What a great restaurant this is. As we looked at the displayed menu, we were greeted by a waiter who showed us yo a delightful table on the boardwalk and immediately offered a choice of sparkling or still water. He returned in around five minutes...for a wine order, then returned with the wine and yo see if we were ready to order food. Service is 10/10. Food was excellent; prawns in a light sauce, deep-fried squid; fresh gnocchi; All light Italian dishes perfect for a sunny autumn day. We will definitely return!More

Waited for a table. Wait staff walked past us. Completely ignored us. Obvious we were waiting to be seated. 1 wait staff member on only. Sick of waiting. Walked away in indignation. Went to competition next door instead. Hope the owner is aware he is...losing customers and reputation.More

Visiting family in Perth and wanted a nice place for dinner on a Sunday evening to celebrate a family occasion. Many places were already booked or not open. Found Gioia via this website and were very happy with decision. Lovely evening! Locatoin is beautiful, service...was great (not too much or too little) other than we did have to wait a while for our bill which we received when we requested it. We shared some entrees (Polenta. Croquettes and Bruschetta - all delicious). For mains most had pasta - Bolognese was excellent, Squid ink pasta a little bland/sauce thick, Grilled Barramundi delicious. Desserts were mostly good as well although profiterole was really a large choux pastry in caramel sauce so not quite what we expected. Would have liked to have been able to have espresso/cappuccino with meal (only regular coffee available) but overall, a lovely evening. Only suggestion would be a bit more light on the tables as it gets dark as it was difficult to see how food as the sun went down. Maybe some of those small battery-operated touch lamps. Note: Parking can be a bit of a challenge - you may find street parking otherwise you will need to use the Wilson Parking about 5 mins walk away.More

In a nutshell Gioia is set in a picturesque location and the hosting team deliver great service. Friendly, attentive and fun they totally made our night. We were four friends meeting after way too long and we all found something we couldn’t resist. There was...nothing quite like a bowl of seafood marinara on a warm Perth night with some local wine. The seafood was plentiful and cooked just right. The serve was very generous. And because we sat outside it was easy to chat with no distractions or noise. Couldn’t have wished for a more perfect nightMore

It is our last lunch in Perth on this trip and wanted to go somewhere relaxing , serene and have a beautiful meal. We chose Gioia on the River. Couldnt have asked for a more special day. Staff are amazing. Owner charming. But the food......incredible....We chose to only have entrees. - grilled calamari, tiger prawns, delicious sardines, burrata , chips and some lovely Italian pinot Grigio. Dessert was tiramisu (the BEST I have had for a long time) and a lovely lemon gelato with limoncello running through it. Although the restaurant was busy it was very relaxing. Could not recommend this restaurant more highlyMore

Perfect spot for outdoor dining right on the river in East Perth. We went a busy Friday night but the service was great and the food was even better. I had bruschetta and the gnocchi and it was one of the best gnocchis I’ve had,...so light and the sauce was perfect. My son had the prawns and then spaghetti marina and he was very happy with it as well. Highly recommend this restaurant.More

Had a booking for 7.30. Was asked to provide a credit card number for pre authorisation in case of late cancellation . Can’t believe when we arrived there was not a table ready for us. The worst part was the the owner didn’t even care.... He was angry with us and threatened to cancel our booking . When we decided to leave he followed us out yelling and swearing at us. When we said we would be giving a bad review he threatened to charge my card even though we didn’t even get seated . We go out to dinner alot and this is by far the worst experience I have ever had . The owner is a loose cannon . Looking at other reviews this type of thing has happened before . Do not eat here 😡More

We had a table booked for 7.30pm which wasn’t ready when we arrived a little after 7.30. We were greeted by the owner and enquired as to when our table might be ready. The owner then proceeded to raise his arms, raise his voice and...then swore at us. We then decided to leave as we weren’t comfortable spending time there. When leaving the owner followed us out of the restaurant and continued his verbal tirade which continued to carry on after we had left the premises. Disgraceful behaviour when we had done nothing wrong and we were looking forward to a good night out.More

I wouldn’t rate this restaurant at all. The owner needs to go and do a anger management course because you can not swear at your patrons and follow them out of the restaurant ranting and raving, when we did nothing wrong.

We use to visit here for special occasions but will give somewhere else a try next celebration. Food has always been good as has the riverside location however it is let down with the staff not smiling, trying to get staff attention, waiting 30 mins...for your bill which they do try to get you to just pay at the counter but several times after insisting we check it at the table we have been double charged, charged for things we haven't had or $10 for tap water. When bringing to the attention of the staff, they have been apologetically removed but for the prices, you are after the experience, not just the food.More

What a disappointment! We came here for a special occasion and had to cancel our mains as we were left to wait way too long. We booked a table (Thursday night) for 630pm and by 7:30pm our table got our first round of drinks and...we had to ask how far away our starters would be. It got to 8:30pm and we were told our mains would be 30mins away so we decided to cancel our meals. We did have a table of 11 and we can understand if the place is busy, but you shouldn't accept bookings that size if you simply cannot accommodate the numbers. Waiting 2.5hrs to get to main is just plain unacceptable, we had a baby with us who needed dinner and 9pm is a joke. Having to chase up drinks was embarrassing too. It's just really disappointing and ruined a special occasion. We wish we booked elsewhere!! The manager couldn't give a toss and was too busy drinking and chatting to patrons while his poor staff ran off their feet. He was also a bit creepy and seemed like he was drunk. We also seen a staff member help themselves to a customer's leftovers, yuck! I wish we paid more attention to the other bad reviews because they are all 100% true and is exactly what happened to us! Avoid and go elsewhere!More
