About
Garum is named after a Roman fish sauce made by salting and fermenting fish in small clay jugs or vessels, which was used commonly throughout ancient Roman cooking. This Roman osteria in Perth is a collaboration between Guy Grossi and The Westin Perth, housed in the historic Hibernian Hall in Perth City’s East End. Our menu, delivered by head chef Stefano Pingue, focuses on both these ancient Roman techniques and Roman classics in a modern and relaxed environment.

Attached to the Westin, this is the place where in-house guests have breakfast. Breakfast was great, it was a good Italian take on what usually is an "american" style at chain hotels. I particularly liked the olives that I could serve myself. I came here twice for dinner in my 2 night stay, having scallops, nduja pasta and the lamb to finish with a tirmisu on the first night. All were top, but as the lamb had not come with anything, it was a tad singular in its taste profile. On the second night, I have the cacio e pepe which was surely cooked by an italian with the pasta being half raw. :) and the porketta which was great with cabbage. The service here is a huge let down and simply put, servers are robotic, dont look at guests and have their heads down. While I know things were busy the night I came, the little small talk I tried to make with the server was responded with "we are busy, I must go speak to the other table" :(. For me, the tirimisu, which a take on the classic was a let down. I would return, but for a restaurant that has Mr. Grossi's name on the door, I expect much more.

When Garum opened a couple of years ago, it was amazing. A buzzing, vibrant place with enthusaystic staff and really great food. Sadly, this time, it was very quiet, and the service can only be described as lacklustre. The menu, like so many other places in Covid time, has been pared back, which is fine, but I struggled to find anything that really interested me. The salumi platter was barely adequate. The bread was good, the olives wonderful. The pasta was ok, but really nothing special. A great fuss was made about the large bowl of tiramisu served by the chef when Garum opened - this time, just individual bowls, plonked on the table. It’s good tiramisu, though. The crostata was very dense, and just a tad lacking in fruit. All up, for a restaurant in a supposedly 5 star hotel? Yeah, we had better food and much better service at the local greasy spoon in South Perth the next night. I wish I could recommend Garum, we used to love it, but I don’t think we will be back.

On arrival to Garum, we waited 5 minutes or so to be seated, despite wait staff coming to the front entry apologising to us for the wait. "The Manager will be along shortly" Our table was right there near the front door. (disappointing, but ok) Asked if it was a special occasion, we said our (40th) wedding Anniversary. We waited some time before our drinks arrived. Hubby ordered a dark beer but not available. 10 minutes after Hubby's entree arrived, I asked where mine was and she scurried off to the kitchen. (Courteous to serve meals at same time, especially in a fine dining restaurant - only 2 of us). Asked of we'd like a 15 minute break before our main, we said yes. Turned around and our mains were put in front of us.(Oh well, lets eat while its hot). We ordered dessert and Limoncello. No Limoncello! Really! It's a Saturday night and an Italian restaurant! On the bill was Anniversary dessert no charge. We didn't receive it. "Sorry Ma'am, maybe we can make it up to you next time you come" Not sure there will be a next time. So many excellent restaurants to eat at. Decor nice, ambience pleasant,

My friend and I went to this beautiful establishment with such good reviews and hopes. We went for pre dinner drinks and a bar snack/meal. We made a reservation also so they knew we were coming. (for 430pm) We ordered, a bottle of Prosecco, Pate, Croquettes & Sourdough. In order to order the Sourdough quantity (as you pay per slice) we asked how much pate you get to determine the amount to order and got spoken to as if we didnt understand. Both the staff must have been stressed or something because they both seemed to get annoyed that we were asking their advice on how many slices they would order for the pate. In the end we just ordered 4 slices, and if it wasnt enough we would just order more. The bottle of prosecco was plonked in front of us with our glasses, no ice bucket. The sourdough slices are BIG. and so delicious. The Croquettes were so tasty. We never got the Pate after all the confusion with us asking how much bread they would recommend to go with the pate. Sigh. Big let down. And we still couldn't tell you how many slices would go with the Pate as we never got it. The staff members did attempt to be a bit kinder as we left, but too little too late for us. Would recommend for the taste of the croquettes, but for the service, we will be very hesitant to go back.

I have eaten in a lot of restaurants around the world and this was the best food and experience I’ve had. Every dish we had was faultless, we had around 10 dishes small plates and large. The lamb is beautiful, the smoked swordfish was also amazing. The service was great, we was seated straight away, we had our first plate in under 5 minutes of ordering. The service was very personal and polite. Please ignore the bad reviews, these people are either delusional or don’t know what good food is. I couldn’t recommend more. Sensational.

We were staying at The Westin and decided to give this restaurant a try - huge mistake! The service hit and miss - I can live with that…but not even cutlery on the table! What? We eat with our fingers? No way! The cured meat entree was fine but the mains (pasta) were disgusting… Lobster tortellini with shell grit present and a rigatoni in the most bland, flavourless sauce! I actually had pasta on a Qantas flight over to Perth 2 days earlier and it was far better! I can say that Maccas would have been more appetising! The only saving grace is they ended up not charging us for the mains which is still pretty poor considering… Do yourself a favour and avoid at all costs - Hungry Jacks or Maccas is fine dining and Guy Grossi needs to take a good long, hard look at the garbage a restaurant with his name on it is serving! One star is being generous!

This could well be our best dining experience of our 3 nights’ stay in Perth, starting with its complimentary sourdough bread (4 slices for the two of us). Restaurant was busy on a Friday night, and we waited a while to be served, but after that it was smooth sailing. My husband who is a fish eater thoroughly relished his red emperor dish as I tucked into my generously sized porchetta with the crispiest of skin. I accompanied my meal with their Voyager Estate Garum Cabernot Merlot. Sublime! One little hiccup was our dish of charred broccolini which came smothered with cheese, which I do not take. We had not noticed the pecorino mention. Our server Ying kindly undertook to change it for us although my husband had started on it. This is service as it should be, and makes us want to return on our next trip.

We had a wonderful dinner and 3 breakfasts at Garam. Breakfast had the best selection of any hotel buffet anywhere. Delicious omelettes made to order, great coffee, freshly squeezed OJ, tiny delicious pastries; the cinnamon swirls are divine. Dinner we had stuffed courgettes, octopus, duck tortellini , all so good and a very generous serving of tiramisu. Great wine list and Veronica made us feel very welcome every morning- the dinner host was charming.

Food was ok at best. The lamb was served by itself and 25% fat not meat as paid for. Table was too small for the plates. The next table had to put some plates on the seat next to them. And the used plates took 30 minutes to clear. I would suggest that the music is turned off as it is just noise. The chairs on the table are good for a cafe not a restaurant as after a while they are not comfortable The dessert was too try and barely edible.

Unfortunately was a disappointing experience. Probably I picked the wrong dish and Carbonara was blend on flavour, over peppery, guanciale was more like thin shaved pancetta and pecorino wasn’t tasted at all. Service needs a lot of improvement, very cold and almost not detected. On the other hand, ambience was really nice and wine selection was good.

Service was terrible. we ordered sharing portions of appetisers and main courses. When the appetisers arrived we asked for plates so we could share our appetisers, and the server pointed us to the bread plates and asked us to use those instead. Both main course pasta were under-done. When we told the wait staff it was under cooked, she said “it’s supposed to be al dante”. It was clearly under cooked. When we left quite a bit of pasta uneaten, the wait staff tried to tell us that the pasta we ordered was a “thin pasta” and was supposed to be done that way. All in all, very bad meal and wouldn’t go back

Excellent ambiance, but Loud. The food and service were outstanding, and very Roman /Central Italian. I would have liked to have seen some more daring entrees, like Chingale or Pasta Grecia, but they probably know their audience better than me.

Went with friends for a birthday dinner. The food was absolutely spectacular. Portions a tiny small but every single thing that we ordered was absolutely delicious. The steak in particular was cooked to perfection. Recommend for a special occasion.

First time visit and had an excellent meal. The service was very good and the waitstaff were knowledgeable when asked about items on the menu. As said in other reviews, it is quite expensive with all the mains, excluding the pasta dishes, costing more than $40. The food was excellent, especially the porchetta.

An upmarket Italian restaurant housed in a stunning building and connected to The Westin Perth. Great ambience inside and outside. We had a very high expectation when we walked in but were let down by the food. The spread that accompanied the bread was the least favourite. All the 3 of us ordered pasta for our mains. The texture of the pasta was amazing but the pasta dishes were very bland. It could probably because lack of seasoning. We could taste the freshness of some ingredients. The cheeses used were of great quality. I hope the restaurant will look into this matter because I really want to give it another chance. In contrast, the desserts were delicious. I will return!
