A little disappointing

I love Mateos and most staff were super friendly except 1 guy, he clearly seemed over it. I get Broome is so busy at the moment but us customers are paying a premium we expect to get good service and quality food. We got the grill fish so yummy except one of us got the $5 serve of chips, yep we counted about 8 soggy cold Chips under the fish when I asked for seperate. You have a great reputation you need to lift your game a little. Drinks were chilled and lovely and great ambiance. Will come again 😃

Hi Kelly, I appreciate you passing your feedback on and I am sorry that the customer service wasn't up to scratch. We are doing our best to provide premium service here at Matso's and it is quite obvious that Broome is absolutely pumping at the moment (which is fantastic!) however, with a few restaurants not open we are certainly feeling it day in and day out. Not only are we busy all day everyday but we are also understaffed which makes it a little hard. We are doing our best to get our hands on crew but with COVID restrictions it is rather difficult.. there is light at the end of the tunnel and we are all very much looking forward to having a full team on board and being able to open with our usual full day trading hours as soon as we can. The different beer's are truly inspiring. The food is average and does not add any value to Broome cullenary tastes. The discjoky music selection was poor and extremely loud avoiding any possible conversation. I hope with their advertising of different musicians night to get more variation of the eclectic mix existing in Broome. The split of ordering system between drink's and food is very time consuming and annoying. It truly would help the client to be able to make one order at one place.

We ate her 3 times on our 5 day visit, we liked the food and the place, plus it was just over the road from our accommodation at Moonlight Bay Suites. Breakfast on the verandah was leisurely and delicious with gluten free options and dinner was very popular so booking is recommended but twice we arrived without a booking and had drinks in the garden whilst waiting 20 - 30 minutes for a table. Meals are varied, interesting and well cooked and the venue is delightful with tables on the verandah, in the garden and inside. They have live music on Tuesdays and early evening is popular with families.

This restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and steeped in history so worth a visit. The waiting staff were without exception friendly and we had some lovely Gin and Tonics while waiting for our meal. And wait we did for about 50 minutes from ordering. This in itself wouldn’t have been a problem as the G & Ts and worked there magic. Out came 1/2 of one meal the fish (snapper) but without the chips which were $5 extra. The fish was dry and tasted like it had been sitting on the plate for some time, the accompanying side salad was a coarsely cut red cabbage, something I wouldn’t dream of serving up at all. After we had finished the fish we were asked if we were waiting on anything else. We explained that we had ordered chips to go with fish and a curry meal as our second meal. They were most apologetic and 10 minutes later our curry arrived, served cafeteria style on an aluminium platter. The curry was described as consisting of 2 curries rice and accompaniments, these consisted of a spoon of chutney, some more red cabbage and one soggy chapati. The curry was a bean curry and a chicken curry both very small servings, there was two small pieces of chicken in a reasonable sauce, the bean curry was red kidney beans in a watery sauce. It was probably the disappointment meal I have ever had at a restaurant. I want to stress that we are understanding of the COVID situation and the fact that restaurants are having teething problems but that doesn’t excuse for poor quality food. We had a lovely meal at Zanders a few days previous with similar delays but because the food was tasty and we weren’t short changed on the ingredients when it arrived we went away happy customers.

Exceptionally disappointed

I had been looking forward to Matso's since I booked my flight to Broome 3 months ago though now I wish I had spent those months finding somewhere else to go. I don't understand how with 8 staff members behind the bar I still waited 10 minutes to be served a drink. I was missed 3 times as new arrivals were served before me and once I ordered my jug of pale ale I received a smoky bishop (dark lager) jug. Our table ordered hot chips and we did not receive them and when we asked where they were the staff told us we hadn't, so we had to prove through our bank accounts and adding up the menu we did pay for them. We got no apology for this. We finished with espresso martinis ($54 for 3) and watched the bartender scoop half ice half water into the shaker. This is 3 problems we had many more. I will never go back and will take the time to tell others not to either.

Very Disappointed!

We came to Matso's because we had had such a great experience last year but unfortunately that was not the case this time. We had previously booked and were shown to a table where not all of us could sit in the shade and then from the time we arrived at our table to the time that the food arrived it was an hour and a half!!! When ordering our food we asked if some garlic bread could be delivered as an entree before our main course and we were told that this would probably not be able to happen and it would all arrive at once ... and it did! Last year we ordered grilled barramundi and it was just perfect - thick and juicy with a lovely side salad. We ordered the grilled barramundi this year, but unfortunately, it was a small thin piece that was just dry and the side salad was so so. We understand that staff shortages are a big problem in Broome with what's going on in August 2020 but if they can't cope due to staff shortages they should not take bookings for so many people. When we arrived at 12:00 there was a queue of over 20 people who hadn't booked so it was obvious that Matso's were still taking people when they couldn't cope with the numbers they already had seated. We have eaten at two other well-known venues where the food and service could not be faulted so unfortunately we will not be returning to Matso's which is a shame.

HI MasanandBillO, Thanks for taking some time to pass this feedback on and I am sorry to hear your visit was not as great as your last. I apologise for the significant wait on your food, you mention seeing the queue at the door & that is something we have had all day everyday for a few weeks now, we thought things would be pretty grim for us this season but it has turned around which is a great thing for us and Broome and are doing our best to manage it. This is partly why we only book a certain amount of tables out and other guests arriving are on a 'walk in basis' where they will have to wait for a table and are told that upon their arrival. Rather than turn people away and say we have no room for them, we try to accommodate as best we can, they may only stay for a beer but we may be able to book them in for another time. We have reverted to Goldband Snapper this season as we had Barramundi on our menu quite some time. I will be sure to pass your feedback onto the chefs though. With multiple other restaurants closed this season Matso's has definitely felt the influx in patrons and rest assured we are still hiring & training to be able to cope with this. I sincerely apologise this visit not meeting your expectations and I would hope you'd give us another shot. If you'd like to come in again please reach out to me directly and I will organise this. Training is needed urgently!

I love this place and always will, I don’t care if they forget my order or my drinks. I just love coming here on a warm day to drink some ginger beer and to look out over the water. However! Some things just start to wear thin, and I believe it is just a complete lack of competent management, I have never seen a person that looks like a manager on duty and it shows. Servers have a complete lack of situational awareness and do do not know how to cover areas or manage tables. Also in regards to the “surf & turf” at $46, When it was actually a minute steak with no seasoning. No cook worth his skin would purchase and cook a steak like that, he’s obviously been directed from management to purchase it or is also incompetent, it needs to change, I can’t even get a steak that bad from the supermarket. Lift your game and do your job or you will start to lose regulars. Will come again and again and again, as I love the place and only ask that get what I pay for...

Matso's is a Must!

When in Broome a visit to Matso's Brewery needs to be on your to do list. Matso's have a great variety of beer and other drink options. A must try is the Ginger Beer and Mango Beer. The $13 tasting plate is a fun way to try unusual beers on the menu such as the Chilli Beer and Hard Lemon (both delicious). I ate at Matso’s a number of times during my week vacation and loved every meal I had there. My favorite was the Indian plate, that consisted of beef curry, mushroom marsala curry and all the trimmings. The flavors were sensational, amongst the best curry I have ever eaten. I would also highly recommend the Barramundi Curry at lunch time and the Tuna Tempura Board. Sunday nights the beer garden comes alive with a DJ, the place was full and atmosphere was vibrant. Tuesday night is Jam Session night where local bands and singers are given the floor to put on a show and that they did. All our servers were very kind and friendly and happy to have a laugh. A shout out to our main servers Thetis, Lillian and Will who were always a pleasure to come across, even when the venue was full all the staff carried on with a smile and had fun. I am already looking forward to my next visit back to Matso’s.

Disappointing experience at Matso’s

Not sure what was happening in the kitchen tonight but sounds like a crisis was taking place. We arrived at 6pm, order taken at 630pm and then at 7pm, the waitress came to say food will be delayed and we get free drinks. Food arrived at 8pm and although the seafood marinara was good, my chef husband’s steak was cremated and he ordered medium. To their credit, they offered full refund of his meal and were very apologetic. Was a shame as we heard lots of great reviews about Matso’s and were so keen to try. But now maybe not again.

Unfortunately during peak season there are wait times on meals and this season we are busier than we have ever been and those wait times are increasing. We are in the process of making some menu changes to hopefully assist with this and we have also opened up Fumiko our Japanese food truck in our beer garden as an option for a quick bite. Raw chicken for the pregnant lady

In the past year we have loved our visits to Matsos, my husband especially loves the Chango beer each time. Unfortunately this time we left very disappointed and also quite worried after being served a chicken burger with clearly raw / undercooked chicken in it. 1 hour prior we ordered this burger and asked for it to be cut in half the share and were told they will bring a knife instead as the kitchen is slammed and doesn’t have time to cut a burger for us. Ok then? We let that slide. Feeding undercooked chicken to a pregnant lady is a different story though. Their response to that - “so sorry, this burger has been complained about atleast 10 times today!”. Would you not stop feeding it to people then??? Very unprofessional and disappointing coming from a well known and trusted restaurant. Please check your food here because the chef is not. Thankfully we didn’t eat enough of our meal to be sick but wondered about the other people around us eating the same burger.

Hi Jessica, Appreciate you taking some time to pass this feedback on & I would like to apologise for the confusion with regards to the chicken burger. Our Head Chef has been with us for over 7 years at Matso's & has many years experience prior to this. I have spoken with him with regards to this review and he's advised that the cut of chicken we use is drumstick boneless which is the most tender & juiciest part in the chicken, once cooked the meat itself tends to stay a shade pink, not white (like breast) as the fiber & muscle is different. I understand how this may have appeared to be undercooked and I apologise on behalf of our staff and the management of your complaint and that it wasn't handled appropriately whilst you were here. Don't bother with the food here

Don't bother getting food at Matso's, it disappoints again. We've given this place many chances over the years, most recently ordered breakfast and paid $25 for the worlds tiniest eggs Benedict - it was like the kitchen was on rations. Will not be returning.

Bad 1st impression but redeemed second time around

We first went on a Sunday evening and the place was mobbed with sweaty, smoking hordes. The wait was indeterminate for dinner so we abandoned that idea. It was all pretty nasty so we left. But we returned the following Thursday night and it was much calmer and we were immediately seated inside for dinner. The service was great, the mango beer even better! The food is pricey and portions are pretty small (ceviche, ciopinno) but it all tasted superb. We really enjoyed our dinner. Not a cheap night out but it's Broome! If you want a few quiet beers and a feed - DON'T go on a Sunday evening....

Pleasant dinner

Dined here last Sunday. Had the lamb ribs and fish of the day. Fish was a little bit small but for $25 can’t complain too much. Ribs were good. Also had the tasting paddles which was cool to try lots of different beers. Dark and stormy is a must! Service a bit slow as Sunday session in the beer garden meant high traffic. All in all pretty decent feed and it is a lovely spot near the town beach. Would visit again.

Never fails to disappoint

This is the third or fourth time I’ve been there, it’ll be the last. It’s a Broome icon that everyone says you have to do but I still don’t know why. I’ve previously been served prawns that were raw on the inside and when I returned them I was told they were medium cooked. We went again tonight, three people ordered medium rare steaks and were served steak that was almost blue. The one person who wanted a rare steak got his well done. When you’re dining at a local icon and paying a decent amount for a steak it’s a bit disappointing.

Great beer awesome variety

Great beer awesome variety and I’m not a big beer drinker but I loved the chilli ginger beer . The food was mediocre for a start the kids menu has two choices fish and chips or nuggets and chips! I have one fussy eater and had already had hot chips for lunch so we asked for plain spaghetti they had none so we asked if we could get a cucumber sliced up with the chips they said no seemed like it was too hard for them . I had the papaya salad with prawns , I had this salad in Vietnam and this one was missing the crunch factor it was all boring same soft texture and the prawns did nothing for the dish . My husband had the pork belly and being an avid pork belly lover was disappointed with the crackling it was like rubber. The atmosphere is great the service is great the beer is amazing but food needs improvement. There is a Japanese food van down the back of the beer garden didn’t try that but looks interesting.
