Excellent asian restaurant close to the asian district of Melbourne. The food was super tasty, the atmosphere very relaxed and our waiter Morgan very helpful to select the right dishes. We had among other things dumplings, spicy prawn salad, green curry with beef and massama curry with lamb. Sooo good!

Had an amazing dinner with friends sipping cocktails and ordering the favourites menu where we sampled so many of the best dishes on the menu. Loved the lamb curry, beef pad Thai and roast duck wontons! Service by the waiter was excellent and he was very attentive making sure we had enough drinks and we were enjoying the food. Loved the buzzing vibe and would absolutely come back!

I went here with two friends and we jumped on their Me Hungry Now food deal which gave us a lot of food for a set price per head that was cheap compared to what we got. Some dishes were more average but in general the food was very tasty and interesting. The staff were nice, our waitress Carrie (might have remembered the name wrong!) was lovely and friendly. All in all I really like this place and will be back again!

We ordered 4 banquets for dinner and there were a lot of food!!! Had the betel leaf bites, green tea tofu bao, chicken bao, roast duck crisps. Out of these I think the chicken bao was the most memorable. For mains we ordered a Hanoi style whole fish, red duck curry, soft shell crab fried rice and silken tofu. The silken tofu were our favourites, there was a generous amount of soft shell crabs, the red duck curry was how it suppose to be. For sides we had roti and coconut rice, both serves were quite small, had to order extra. I must admit while the food at Hochi mama were flavourful, but it was too spicy, I wasn't expecting this level of spiciness otherwise would've asked them to tone it down. Also the waiters kept telling us about how much time we have left the moment we walked into the door. Still 40 mins to go and they were already wanting to clear our plates even though there's obviously food still on the table, which was quite annoying.

Thank you for your review Winny! Always happy to wind down the chilli factor on dishes - just let our waitstaff know for next time. Additionally, we'll be sure to relay this feedback to our team to ensure that guests don't feel pestered or rushed. All the best and we hope to see you another time post-lockdown!

I wish this restaurant was as good as the other reviews say however, this is not the experience we had. The service was very inattentive (they lost all interest when I reported I wasn’t drinking alcohol), the table we were sat on was extremely wobbly and when I asked if there was something that could be done all I got was “yeah I saw that earlier… it’s the base not the feet” and then just walked away, no offer of a new table or even an apology if there was no other tables. The resultant was dark and hard to see what you’re eating and if you want to have a conversation with your dinner guests forget it the music was so loud The food was relatively ok and the only reason I gave and average score because everything else with the restaurant was a 2 star at best And don’t fall for the “feed me now” option, seriously calculate it when you’re there, you’re hardly saving anything and a heap of the mains cost Extra to include

This restaurant has amazing food. It is like having a taste bud party to celebrate the way they marry the flavors together. Location gets packed so dine early or make a reservation. The wait staff is superb ; we were welcomed by Carmen and she walked us through the menu options. The best option if you are hungry are the Me Hungry Now meals. We had the Hochi chicken banh bao and they were epic just like Carmen said they’d be. The seafood spring rolls were also delicious!!! I don’t feel there is a bad thing on the menu. You can dine inside or out. There is a small step - curb like but otherwise very handicap friendly. They have a full bar and the interior is beautifully painted street art. There are parking locations close by and it is very easy to walk there. Several nights we walked by this restaurant and the wait staff always spoke to us. They made us want to be part of their Hochi Mama family!!

We were really looking forward to our lunch. What a disappointment unfortunately. The food was very ordinary. I ordered the pork belly which was extremely dry. I don’t feel inclined to return. I mentioned the dry meat to the waitress and left it on my plate but was not offered an alternative or compensation on my account. My partners meal was okay but not amazing. I certainly do not feel inspired to return

What a letdown, we were sold on the “feed me” menu which we have done many times before at other restaurants. 2 small, 2 large and a side for $42 (we opted for some dishes that had the ++ $ ) Reminded we had a seating time of 90 minutes that we were happy with because we had to leave for a show after that time anyway, the entire 5 dishes were all served within 20 minutes of us sitting down. We felt “force fed” and rushed to the point we couldn’t even eat the main fish dish which was the market day fish with the extra $ attached. Service was great while trying to upsell to cocktails and the like (which were questionable on how much alcohol was actually in them) and once we ordered everything, we were pretty much left for dead until payment, which was again, rushed and borderline rude. A huge letdown for our anniversary dinner and the food was average over the entire night (25 minutes)

I've arrived on a busy weekend evening on my own, without reservation, and the place was obviously full. However, the girl who welcomed me was extremely nice with unforgettable smile and found me a seat after putting some effort into it. The food was absolutely great, everything felt fresh and cooked to perfection. This is not a fine-dining restaurant and I wouldn't take my grandparents here. However, it makes Asian-European fusion food and everything was perfect. The ambient in the restaurant is just great, better for a gathering of friends and a bit less for first date (the music is loud), but anyone can enjoy it here. Service was great as well, which is very important for me. I would definitely come back!

Returned to Hochi Mama and had not been since they have moved. Much prefer this new premises, not as noisy or crowed (although maybe that is to do with Covid!). The food was really delicious and the service was excellent with our waitress giving good advice regarding amount to order and making sure there were enough of each thing for everyone to taste. Will definitely return.

Gosh HOCHI MAMA you never ever ever disappoint over the 7+ times I have been there I will continue to keep coming back 🤤 We dined on the Mamas Banquet for dinner as it was Mother’s Day and as always was greeted by the most incredible service. We had the chicken bao, fried chicken, duck wonton crisps and spring rolls for starters with the standouts being the bao and the wonton crisps of course. We then moved on to mains and had the Southside Curry with chicken- amazing loved it, Massaman Beef Curry as unfortunately they were out of the whole market dish, the pad Thai and stir fried greens. All dishes were incredible, flavour was beautiful and all the dishes complimented eachother perfectly. Finished off the evening with a Yuzu cheesecake which was delicious, a bit on the bitter side with the Yuzu but if that’s your style then this one is for youuuu! Absolutely had an awesome time and can’t wait to go back again for the 8th+ time 🤍 Ps this place got my mummas approval which is bloody hard to get so freaking good job guys!!

We had dinner here on a busy Saturday night and everything about this place is fantastic. Firstly there's the bar for excellent cocktails and wine, and then there's the service - despite the place being extremely popular and busy staff are well trained and friendly, and know how to look after you. And last but not least there's the really amazing fusion food. We ordered the "Me Hungry Now" menu which gives you 5 dishes to share amongst 2 people. This a great way to try dishes across the menu. We will definitely be back.

We visited early on a Tuesday night, for the second time. We came exactly one year ago during the Grand Prix and it was just as amazing this time. Both times we got the ‘Feed Me Now’ option which is the perfect amount of food for two people (2 small, 2 large, 1 side). We got the Hanoi Chicken Bao and the Roast Duck Crisps to start. There is so much flavour packed into these dishes and they are the perfect bite sized starters. For our two large plates, we got the Beef Rib (extra $8 for the ‘Feed Me Now’) and the Duck Red Curry. Both dishes were incredible!! The Beef Rib just falls off the bone and the salad that accompanies it is covered in this delicious chili sauce. The duck red curry is creamy and spicy, perfect with a side of rice to soak up the flavour. We will always come back to Hochi Mama. The music is great, the mood lighting sets the tone, and the service is great. A 10/10 experience and a must do when visiting Melbourne!

WARNING: 6 of us attended Hochi Mama on 15th June. We booked on line and were forced to select the Favourites Banquet which was listed at $59.50 per person. However when checking the tax invoice the following day I found that we had been charged $69.50 per person. I have tried contacting the restaurant to find out why the charge changed, but so far have no response.

So. Much. Sugar. In EVERYTHING. The peanut sauce with the chicken satay skewers was sickeningly sweet. Was that supposed to be nuoc cham served with the spring rolls? No fish sauce whatsoever, just straight up sugar water. Cashew chicken was sweet, sweet, sweet. The beef in the pad thai was one mangled, tangled wad of inedible connective tissue. Upon being seated, our vapid server advised the restaurant served Vietnamese-fusion style food. No. This food is not remotely representative of Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese or any other Asian cuisine. It's an overpriced abomination, and it makes me sad that diners might come away thinking that this is what Asian food is supposed to taste like. Do yourself a favor and keep on walking. Besides, the neon hip-hop vibe they're going for is so played out. Thumbs down. Hochi NADA.

Chinatown
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
