Thumbs up across the board I had heard plenty about this Melbourne institution and it did not disappoint. The spaghettini with bugs was sublime the suckling pig was delightful. The wine list was generous and enabled the wines to pair up easily. Closed the night off with the Panna Cotta and a strong espresso. The staff were helpful and very... More

This is my absolute favourite restaurant that I visit whenever I am back in my home town. Il Bacaro never disappoints. Real Italian food and fine dining without all the pretence. Wonderful, knowledgable staff who genuinely love what they do and know their food and wine. This place won't disappoint.

Make your reservations early to avoid disappointment. Early sittings are always taken on a Saturday night. This is a fine dining experience in busy Melbourne. The rest of the world may be in a recession, the other Australian states can have their oil & gas or mining booms, Melbourne is in the midst of a DINING boom. The ambience is... More

My wife and I had only just arrived in Melbourne for our first ever visit to the city and we're looking for somewhere close to done. Lucky us il Bacaro was just up the street from our hotel and they were kind enough to offer us a dinning at the bar option on a very busy night for them. The... More

A faultless experience (food, decor, service, atmosphere) . The fresh pasta dishes were truly excellent , packed with flavors, the wine list impeccable and the service very frienly. Highly recommended.

We had not been to this restaurant before and chose it from a dining out guide. It was a great choice. The food was excellent as was the Italian Cortese white wine we chose.I enjoyed my kingfish crudo and the main of spaghettini with Moreton Bay bugs. The service was efficient and very friendly. The only slight negatives were the... More

Great restaurant and a staple in Melbourne. Still serves the best calamari I have ever eaten, just a little small so tables are sparse and Id suggest booking in advance

My sister-in-law and I have a tradition of going on a double date over Valentine's Day each year with our husbands and this year the location we picked was Il Bacaro. It was PERFECT. Despite being tiny in size, it was not claustrophobic at all and in fact the VIBE was very intimate. The staff were very attentive and knowledgeable.... More

Visiting Melbourne for the second time in six months, but this was our first visit here, and it was worth it. An intimate and well appointed restaurant that feels very comfortable. The carpaccio was beautifully done and a great starter. I had agnolotti for main and my partner had the Moreton bay bugs, which were both great meals. The service... More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
