We have been coming here consistently for 40+ years. We’ve brought our children and our grandchildren here. There’s not one item on the menu that isn’t first class. You’ll get an amazing meal for an extremely fair price and you can’t fault the service either.

We went to this restaurant on the recommendation of the hotel staff at the front desk. We were happy we did. The restaurant had a great atmosphere. Being Friday night, the place was fully occupied, predominantly by college-age kids. It was in the college district. We ordered a seafood salad and a pizza, The wine we ordered was good and so was pizza. Although it was difficulty to hear each other in the restaurant due many many voices in the crowd, we enjoyed our evening.

Not as highly recommend. My husband took me there for dinner as we were passing through Lygon Street and next time I won’t bother. As soon as the jug of water came out I said to my husband this doesn’t look good, the jug was so yellow that I refused to drink the water out of it. I ordered the gnocchi. Now we are talking about a Italian restaurant. They don’t make their own gnocchi they buy them in. Disgusting they were like rubber bullets. I refused to eat them. Absolutely appalling. I refused to pay for them but in defence to the owner, he took them off the bill after the waiter only wanted to deduct $5.00 off. My husband did have a nice pizza.

Suffering from serious thin crust piza withdrawals we were very happy when our friend suggested a visit Papa Gino's for lunch. After settling in outside with our friendly host water and bread arrived while we checked the menu. I ordered my favourite small super special pizza, my wife ordered the Ortolana pizza and our friend went for his favourite calamari - with "low calorie" chips. My super special was covered with little prawns, olives, mussels, capsicum, hot salami, bacon and mushrooms. Excellent coverage, thin crust, a filling serve and a good flavour combination. Our favourite pizza restaurant and a Carlton institution.

Papa Gino's has the most delicious minestrone soup! I took a very fussy friend of mine, a professor, there for lunch. I recommended the minestrone soup. This friend was almost obsessive about putting on any excess weight and watched what she ate. When the waiter came to remove her soup bowl, she looked up at him and said...may I have another bowl? It is delicious beyond expectations!

I visit Papa Gino quite often. As an Italian, I can say that the food is excellent and the staff is very friendly. The price is incredibly affordable for the quality and quantity of food served. You can have Barramundi fillets with chips and salad at only 28 AUD, less than I would have paid in Italy!

Visited in July for our brothers 60th Birthday and tried to make a reservation many times before the event. Understandably they do not take bookings and this is a walk up seating/waiting for the tables to become available. However, a little tricky with us having 12 -14 family members. However, after waiting for tables to become available that were close, we eventually got a table. Meals ordered varied from pizzas, which were of a high standard, to regular Pasta, veal, fish, etc. Felt the Pizzas were the best and most authentic and the members of the party felt the veal dishes were good but not great. I had fish and salad and also a good meal, but I wouldn't have it again. The service was very good and the ambiance good. The positioning of our table was near the exit to the toilets and we all had to have our coats on with the draft continually coming through. We would return with choosing different menu options and perhaps leave the larger group booking to another restaurant that was able to give us a table and time to suit. They were doing a good take-away pizza trade and obviously have nailed this area!!

There was 3 of us for dinner, and we ordered the garlic focaccia for our starter and this was tasty. we all ordered the Veal Parmigiana and yes it was huge but tough, tasteless and my plate was left with all the crumbs. the chips were very yellow and tasted like eating strips of flour.

Out of lockdown escape lunch. The staff and owners are friendly and welcoming and the service is always good. They checked our log in which is reassuring. I always order the small Super Special pizza - the combination of prawns, mussels, olives, mushrooms, peppers and hot salami is just perfect. Wine by the glass, the half litre or bottle makes it easy to enjoy lunch. Thanks for another excellent lunch folks

Coming from outside the city Papa Ginos is easy to find and offered fantastic friendly service from start to finish. The food was marvellous and came out quickly, portion sizes were just right. Would highly recommend and will definitely be back on my next trip to Melbourne!

The food looked great, but did not live up to the 4.8 star expectations. The pasta had no flavour, Napoli sauce bitter and the pizzas were very ordinary and even the bread was stale. the tasteless small prawns were better served in fried rice! Very disappointed. The only good thing about this meal was the wine and the company. I will say the food after ordering came did out pretty quick. Suggest they also use real Parmesan cheese too.

Like many of Papa Gino's customers, we have been dining here for many years and are always guaranteed an excellent meal. We usually start with sharing a garlic focaccia followed by pasta, every single dish is always delicious. The service is fantastic and the staff are like one big happy family. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We were looking for a nice pizza and some pasta as we walked along Lygon Street. We came across Papa Gino’s and decided to stay. Papa Gino's offered a delightful dining experience with its enjoyable pizza and satisfactory pasta. The pizza was tasty, with an authentic burnt crust on one side to showcase the wood oven cooked item. While the pasta was decent, it didn't quite steal the spotlight. The overall atmosphere was inviting, and the service was commendable. We would certainly consider returning for another enjoyable meal.

Been visiting for over 30 years. Alway quick friendly service, amazing prices, generous portions. I have never had a bad meal in this place. It isn't a first date venue and certainly isn't fine dinning. Just authentic good value great hospitality. Love the critics who are expecting fine dinning at casual prices. Can't make a sink purse out of a sows ear folks. Pappa Gino's offers an authentic Lygon Street experience.

I remember Papa Gino's from 40 years ago. It was renowned for its quality and value for money. Nothing has changed. You still get bread and butter with a pasta order; the portions are huge; and the quality good. I just wanted a quick pre-play dinner and ordered lasagna, main course size. It was twice what you would get elsewhere and delicious. It brought back fond memories. There was even a discount for using cash ! Service was good without being intrusive.

Lygon Street
If you want real parmesan, cut from the block, grated over your pasta with a twist of style, this is the place. Until recently, this neighbourhood was home to the notorious ‘Carlton Crew,’ a pseudo mafia who started their day with a local espresso. They are gone, but the espresso still runs strong in this Little Italy which has something for everyone. Starched white tablecloths, candles, pizza the way they do it "back home" and maybe even a bit of amore. The number of gelato choices will leave you in a state of indecision and wide footpaths, big awnings and a sea of packed tables makes this al fresco dining experience a continental buzz. Even if you’re not eating, it’s worth the stroll just for the people-watching, which, of course, is an Italian tradition.
