About
Upon opening our doors in 2009, we were thrilled to receive the The Age Good Food Guide's 'HatAward' and have maintained it ever since. Complementing these achievements, we are very proud of Head Sommelier, Travis Howe, who not only won Sommelier of the Year but also picked up the 2013 Wine List of the Year. Nestled in one of Melbourne's iconic laneways (basement Oliver Lane, and Flinders Lane), Coda is located in the busiest and most dynamic culinary precinct the city has to offer. A stone's throw away from the Yarra River, Flinders Street station and Federation Square, the restaurant enjoys hosting a diverse group of diners from frequenting locals who live and work on its doorstep to diners from all over the globe. Upon entering the restaurant you will be greeted by a member of our friendly team headed by Mykal and Kate Bartholomew and Executive Chef Adam D'Sylva. The trio has assembled a dedicated team with highly sought-after experience from many international and Melbourne-based restaurants. Coda's relaxed environment provides a versatile setting for a range of engagements. Whatever your occasion - from a quick pre-football meal, to a long Sunday lunch, business dining or a cosy seat for an anniversary - we look forward to your visit. While bookings are highly recommended, patrons without a reservation can enjoy the full menu at the bar.

Providing farm produce to the restaurant trade, we know when we are presented with good quality produce on our plates. This establishment showed us that simple does not have to be low quality. All our dishes were beautifully presented with the separate flavours clearly identifiable in there intended intensity. This is a restaurant we Will be going back to. Thank you Gerry and Anthony (our neighbours and foodie experts in Tassie) for making the suggestion.

Please to dine again at Coda after 5 or so years. While the iconic Barramundi in jungle juices was missing the food: oyster with scanner crab, spencer gulf king fish sashimi, scallops with delicious citrus hints and the lemongrass& coconut milk curry underneath perfectly cooked flathead (market fish) was excellent. They could probably do with a clare valley riesling on the menu as it would be better quality and value than alsace and support Australian makers. Service was generally Australian standard with 4 different people none of seemed to know what the other was doing.

Hit and miss. Great location and staff were very good. Half of our dishes were really good but one dish was undercooked and another just not up to standard compared to other dishes. Heard great things about Coda but was a little
Disappointed

After supporting these guys during Covid through their takeaway and delivery service, I was most disappointed with the treatment we received when coming back into the restaurant. I had a gift voucher for Tonka (same owner), and when I rang to book a table I asked specifically if we could use the Tonka voucher in Coda and was assured that this was the case, as they were the same owners.
We happily went to Coda to celebrate my son's VCE graduation, and as usual the food was great...but the nasty taste that was left in our mouths when the waitress said they would not honour our voucher (even though we spent $100 more than the voucher value) because it was for Tonka and not Coda left me speechless!
These guys DO NOT deserve your support if they are going to treat repeat customers (or any customers) like this! I paid close to $400 for our meals, and still have $300 left on a voucher I have ZERO intention to use at Tonka given the treatment we received.
Not honouring the voucher for the reason that it was from a different restaurant (SAME OWNER!), and yet cross-promoting Tonka and Coda on their websites and in the venue seems very deceitful to me!
Not happy...

Came here with my partner for our anniversary. Had big expectations having seen the restaurant on TV and reading other reviews. We were greeted by a lovely female member of staff who had us sit at the bar while our table was prepared. We had a cocktail each, I had the Collins for a bushfire charity and my partner had a grapefruit Americano, which were very good. Another male member of staff came to take us to our table. He was nowhere near as pleasant. Was dismissive of our questions about the food (which we assumed might be due to our age, we are a younger couple) and made us feel stupid for asking at all. Once we ordered our food, it came randomly instead of as starters and mains as we asked specifically for. The food itself was disappointing. The tuna salad was just shredded carrot and Daikon with tuna chunks. For the price we expected much more. We had the duck curry which tasted more like duck in curry paste than a curry. There were some good dishes, such as the Pâté and the Oysters. However, these were small dishes and did not make up for the other dishes or the service. We truly expected much better and left very disappointed at how our special day ended.

With an 8 week wait due to its popularity, CODA is 100% worth the wait and experience. Outstanding staff with detailed knowledge of all the wine and meals makes for a very well connected and deeply satisfying time.
Having listened to the staff we chose meals that delivered and then some. From tempura bugs and pork skewers thru mains and desert specials it’s a meal we will speak of for a long while to come.

Ate as a group of six. That allowed us to choose many dishes to share which gave a broad view across the offerings. No dish disappointed. Some stood out (see below). Great guidance on wine and the Armagnac is outstanding.
Definitely will go again but if a couple its hard to taste across the menu

I have been to CODA a few times now (probably on the verge of over doing it but YOLO) and each time I try something I didn't get around to trying last time. The all time favourite will always be the betel leaf kingfish ceviche it is UNREAL. We also had a sticky chicken dish with rice which was also incredible. It isn't always on the menu as it changes seasonally. Service is great, wine is great!

I was there for a business lunch. The food was quite good however the selected dishes were a bit spicy. The only thing that surprised me was that I received a bill for our lunch that was not corresponding to the ordered items. Actually, it was almost 100 AUD over and they claimed that charged another table’s bill to our bill. Although they apologised for the mistake I was expecting that prior submitting a bill they check what is charged at least for this type of restaurant.

I have dietary restrictions and while I eventually did have a reasonable if overpriced meal this was handled awkwardly. There was little flexibility and very little choice. Staff need a good class in customer service , there was a general air of disdain and unfriendliness. Little awareness of different dietary needs, it just seemed too much trouble

Our first night in Melbourne and we booked Coda because my son had heard a lot about it. What an amazing night we had. The Maitre'D (wish I could remember his name) was fantastic, he ran us through the menu, asked what we liked and then suggested most of our meal and we just added a few things to it. Couldn't fault it, it was all fantastic. Flavours are mostly subtle but some hit hard but in a good way. I would thoroughly recommend an evening here.

Return visit after 3-4 years. Was with a vegetarian colleague so decided to go all vego and see how it went. Overall they did a good job and we got to sample a variety of tastes and textures. Jungle curry was good, as was the san choi bao, but I was left with the feeling that it was not as exciting as last time. Nothing has changed much since my last visit, so I conclude that whilst they used to be a standard setter, they are now part of the pack. Service was great as always. Beer list is disappointing in this day and age.

A long time favorite that is as good as it ever was, possibly even better. The service is professional with good recommendations (particularly wine). The food is so yummy. Highly recommend either of the banquets, they are a perfect way to enjoy the best of Coda; with must haves being the scallops and the crispy prawn betel leaf. That being said, we have worked our way through the whole menu over the years and never been disappointed. The desserts are definitely worth saving room for. A bonus of the banquet is the pandan lamington with passion fruit sorbet - which is about the best dessert ever.

We had heard glowing reports about Coda, so when we had a trip to Melbourne planned, we made sure we booked a table so we wouldn’t miss out. OMG we are so pleased we did. From the moment you enter this stylish, well laid out restaurant, you are greeted by one of the team with a warm welcome and genuine smile. The menu is so appetising, catering to all dietary requirements, made choosing our dishes extremely difficult. Luckily for us we were expertly guided through the menu by our own dedicated team member which worked out perfectly. The smaller plates, were insanely good, the semolina puff filled with duck liver parfait, Kaffir lime salmon gravlax with whipped tobiko and the Wagyu ox tongue skewer with chilli oil started our journey to “food heaven.” The In between we chose Tea smoked duck breast & kingfish sashimi again both balanced, incredible favours and superb presentation. We enjoyed the Semolina puff from the smaller plate, we had to each order another serving. Onto the Bigger plate we chose the 350g scotch fillet with black pepper butter and crispy leeks. Adding a cos hearts, pomegranate, wasabi pea salad and Pomme frites on the side, made it the ideal amount of food for our party of three. Again a taste sensation, steak melted in your mouth and the salad a crisp and clean accompaniment. The wine list is extensive featuring wines from around Australia and the globe complimenting the food perfectly. The dessert menu looked very enticing however we chose to finish off the evening with a liqueur. Once finished up we were greeted by the team a good night and seen to the door. This is a must on your next night out in Melbourne. Not only is it about the awesome food for me it’s also about the whole journey, from the time you enter to the time you leave. CODA has done this in spades. Well done team, we can’t wait until we return.

Loved our experience and the food from small bites to larger dishes was absolutely brilliant.
We were confused that we couldn’t book a table online but when we rang the venue they had no problem seating us. There were also more tables free during our whole sitting than I would have expected. Perhaps not everyone rings when unsuccessful on line.
Definitely worth a repeat visit

Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
