The Charles Dickens tavern has the best staff of ant pub I have ever visited. We returned there after not having visited Melbourne for 8 months, and were greeted on first name. Awesome place for a beer and a bite

A bland plate of Bangers and mash that we waited 20 mins for, with a glass of wine & a beer, that we paid well over $50.00 for is not value for money.

The day before Melbourne Cup is not a good day to dine out for lunch unless you have booked a significant time before. We had resigned ourselves to having dreaded fast food when we stumbled across The Pickwick Restaurant. We expected the usual booked out or too late (the kitchen was about to close) but we were accommodated and warned... More

A pint of Guiness was cold and well poured with a nice creamy head, i ordered the Guiness pie with vegetables a great choice , pie was full of meat and gravy and... More

Liked the fact that this is a pub that one would see alot in the UK. Didnt like that the place smelled somewhat of The Ghost of Cigarettes and Beers Past.

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
