Fantastic food and excellent service. Didn't feel comfortable eating any of the live Lobsters or Crabs but the Oysters were beautiful. The other dishes we had were very good also.

We found this restaurant by accident on a hot Melbourne day with very hungry grumpy children. The staff were so friendly and welcoming and patient with us as we had never had yum char before! We LOVED it. The food was so good. The BBQ...pork buns were so divine we had to take some home for later. We were well attended- never ran out of food or drink and the place is spotlessly clean and relaxing. Highly recommended!More

The waitress who served us was well versed in the menu and was very attentive to our table. This restaurant was very efficient with the time food came out as well as allowed plenty of time for digestion. I could not recommend this restaurant more,...easily the best Chinese food on south bank with the most amazing staff! 10/10!!More

Chinese is one of those cuisines that has been overdone to the point of underdeliver. This is a great change from the usual, with some of the best cantonese Chinese food I have eaten, outside of Hong Kong. For the most past, this isn't traditional...Chinese cuisine, and that's exactly what I was there for. The menu features many of the usual ingredients, but the quality and planning in the food here is first rate and fresh. We ended up having the chef's banquet on the night and there was not a single item that didn't wow me with taste, even the presentation was of a very high standard. The restaurant as well was well appointed and had a great atmosphere. Nothing to extravagant or inventive though. With the exception of the very busy restaurant being occasionally slow in service, for a Chinese restaurant this sets a very high standard. If you are fatigued with suburban Chinese restaurant food, give these guys a go if you want a sense of how good it can be. The only faults I felt were the cramped layout, along with the strain on the service that made it slow. That's not really their fault, but be mindful it took us 2.5 hours to get through the whole banquet.More

The Red Emperor serves a superior sort of Cantonese food, similar to yum cha, but more up-market. We had chicken and sweet corn soup to start, followed by chilled jellyfish. We had several other courses, but the best was the Peking Duck. We had scallops,...which were tender and delicious. For dessert we had mango pudding, which was sweet and tasty.. We had a good chardonnay to drink, and also copious jasmine tea, We had a great table overlooking the Yatta River. Our server was very helpful. By the way, you get a discount if you pay cash.More

We were very excited to celebrate my sister’s 50th birthday at the red emperor, but found the food was very average, the cost excessive and amount left us still needing more. We had ordered the $90 banquet. While the service was ok we were encouraged...to put through a tip. Our tip is don’t mix golden syrup with banana fritter and fried ice cream or buy generic ice cream.More

After walking up and down South Bank searching for a nice restaurant we settled on Red Emperor. I had been there before with a large number of people and I recalled the food was quite nice. We selected the banquet for 2 and eagerly awaited...the arrival of the dishes. The service was nice and polite and the head waiter seemed eager to please. The 2 person banquet was $90 per head, I was ready for lashings of food as I was pretty hungry. Unfortunately, its a big scam. The dishes in the banquet are 3 entrees which were nice enough, and 2 mains and a desert. The entrees we had were reasonable and tasty. Then the main dishes turned up. The peking duck consisted of two thin slices of duck meat packed into a pancake roll, 2 each. not quite a main meal. Then the diced beef fillet turned up, probably about 8 slivers of meet with 8 battered green beans and a tiny bowl of fired rice. That's it. I was still starving and I am not a huge eater. Then the dessert came out, neither of us could eat them. I had the deep fried ice cream. There was nothing deep fried about it. In fact it if had been within 2 metres of a deep fryer I will eat my boot. It was cold, tasteless and rock hard. I am always wary of banquets as restaurants use it as a license to make profits. To think we paid $180 and got probably $30 worth of food makes my blood boil. All I can do is make others aware of the scam and avoid making the same mistake we did. We will certainly never be back here.More

One of my go to eateries when in Melbourne a good place to catch up with friends and it has never let me down I have been several times. Very impressed with the extensive vegetarian options there is even a banquet, in the past the...vegetarian options were limited. I was impressed with the dumplings they were lovely and fresh. The Peking shredded shitake mushroom was sensational cannot wait to have it again so tasty. I was with 4 people and all were happy with the food. Good service, good food, good location. Good covid practice.More
