Apparently a medium rare steak comes as medium well done! I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I found out how many chips were on my plate. I'd like to think that if I'm paying $60 for a steak, I should receive more than 4 chips on my plate... service was good, the meal however was very disappointing.... More

Nice atmosphere with adjoining terrace/beergarden. Reminded me of some pubs in Ireland. Doenside was the smoke.

On recommendation from one of our tour drivers we went to the oldest pub in Melbourne and loved it! The Mitre is actually a Pub downstairs and a nice restaurant upstairs in the style of an English pub with heavy and dark wood. Pub seating is outside on a terrace and inside at the bar, on tall tables and seated... More

Went here today to try it out as I've walked passed many times. It's a great place after work and you can stand / sit inside or out. It's a good meet up place for the boys and they have loads of draft available as well as a bit of sport on tv. I went for a pint of Fat... More

The oldest pub in Melbourne has an interesting history. Draws a bustling after-work crowd with good bar menu options and a steak house upstairs. Can recommend

Brilliant lunch again at Mitre Tavern again. Staff are excellent and always happy to oblige. Top that off with the best quality steaks cooked to perfection in Melbourne BAR NONE and it all makes for the relaxing enjoyable lunch one would expect. Mitre Tavern has been our "go to" for lunch whenever I get into the city. Never been disappointed... More

The downstairs bar maybe crowded and noisy with the city gentry but for a more select atmosphere with the best steaks in town then try the restaurant upstairs.

Popular with the after work set and does get very crowded. Steaks have been good in the past and the wait staff friendly and efficient. Its a pub style atmosphere so temper your expectations on fine dining. Its tasty food, has good portion sizes with good service.

Decent but unmemorable food in a pleasant Melbourne pub. I had a thai style salad which was a bit underwhelming - slightly tough beef, and the dressing could have packed more punch.

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
