Having not been here for quite a few years thought it would be a treat. Food was very good, attending waiters were very attentive, had a bit of a break, possibly due to a private party arriving. On the completion of our evening Barry was not a happy Chappy, practically threw the Eftpos machine across the table for the transaction.... More

We have visited this establishment many times over many years before this visit. Unfortunately our dinner this time just didn't work. Flower Drum is not an inexpensive venue and so a key expectation is that the dining experience will be special for the high price paid. That didn't happen this time. The service was slow because their kitchen was obviously... More

Spacious, serene dining rooms with attentive service which is unobtrusive and unhurried. Beautiful food and good choice on luncheon tasting menu - choice of 2,3, or 4 courses. Considering the upmarket style and ambience of the restaurant, the wine list is reasonably priced. One of Melbourne's best Chinese restaurants with fairly extensive a la carte menu.

We booked for a special occasion dinner and it did feel special. The service feels very personal and the food is top quality. Not great value but that's not the motivation for going. Minimum $100 pp. Peking duck is yummy - super crisp skin and tender meat. Seafood soup noodle is special and delicate and calamari and beef were both... More

Having not been to Flowerdrum for well over a decade, our dinner on Sunday night reminded me of why I have for so long been so keen to return. The very fine and attentive - without being intrusive - service from our two waiters was first class, as was the food we selected, and also the accompanying wine. My partner... More

Flower Drum has been an institution in Melbourne for a good 30 years if not longer and it still impresses. You will certainly come away with a dent in your wallet though it is worth for the quality of food, brilliant service and fabulous wine list. If you are wanting a fine dining, Chinese meal then definitely head here.

Courtesy of a Christmas present from our children, my wife and I arrived at the Flower drum last Saturday evening anticipating a memorable night - and we weren't disappointed. From the moment we entered the building from Market Lane where we were met and shown the lift; to the exit from the lift where we were again met and taken... More

Good food, however very overpriced for what it was. Alcohol was very expensive. Wait staff were attentive , explaining each course as it came out. Long wait between each course. Book well in advance. Overall a disappointing experience, I think thre are better options locally.

The flower drum just keeps on delivering its premium service and exquisite food. Had the 3 course lunch banquet. The toffee apples were not listed on the banquet for desert but they were happy to substitute. Still the best Chinese cuisine in Melbourne.

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Chinatown
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
