The food was quite bad and this is the first time we have left half a dish. One of the dishes ordered was called satay beef, I personally had one spoonful and couldn't eat any more. I doubt it as even beef, whatever it was had been soaked in some sort of salt brine. We had fried rice, which was... More

The food was okay but the service was pretty ordinary. We were shoved into a corner, so close to another table that we were touching elbows. Luckily the other guests could see the funny side of it too. The restaurant was very busy and it showed. They clearly wanted to get everyone in and out quickly. The plus side is... More

Dumplings were nice, also had lemon chicken and sweet n sour pork. Was a super cheap night out. Service wasn't great but didn't spoil our night. Would return.

We called in here as it was near our hotel and we had arrived quite late in the evening and were very hungry It looked popular she we thought let's give it a try, the service was terrible with dishes turning up at different times, and the quality of the meet in the dishes was very poor. I had a... More

I would like to thank Empress of China for giving me the most hilariously awful experience I have ever had at a restaurant. We entered the restaurant and the man at the cashier gave us the wrong table number, they took 30 minutes to approach our group to ask us what we wanted, and when we asked to order before... More

If you want fawning waiters and 3 Hat Cuisine.....don't come here. However if you like cheap but not necessarily cheerful this is a great place. Business like is the best description. The food is excellent value for money. The entertaining part is seeing who can attract the attention of the wait staff. They move very fast. Having said that -... More

This restaurant has been here for over 40 years . Don't be deceived that there is not enough tables as they have a very big upper level as well. There is a lot of variety to choose from which should suit all tastes. Food is good and they don't skimp on portions. We were able to take leftovers home.

Interesting to read some of the negative reviews. The reviews of it being cheap are very true - this place is dirt cheap. But the sceptics wonder there must be a reason and something has to be wrong. Sure the decor is dated - so what - take your date somewhere else! The place is clean, the service is quick... More

Good tasting food, fast service and large menu to choose from. Always packed so be prepared to wait both lunch and dinner or get there early.

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Chinatown
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
