Overlooking leafy Bourke Street Hill, Bottega serves some of Melbourne’s best modern Italian cuisine. The menu takes inspiration from regional Italian cooking, with several Sicilian influences. Dusty Treweek, formerly of Comme and Stokehouse, leads the kitchen team, using the highest quality produce across the entire menu. This includes lemons, oranges and nettles sourced from owner Denis’ farm in Rutherglen. Ditalini is made by hand and served with braised duck leg, smoked pancetta, lentils and broccolini. Twice cooked lamb shoulder is slow cooked, served with eggplant, almond and black garlic, while Tasmanian salmon very slowly poached and accompanied by shallot puree, squid ink crackers,
We hosted a dinnerfor 20 in a private dining room and couldn't have been more pleased with the the quality and choice of the food as well as the impeccable service. All of our guests gave rave reviews of the experience.
Been twice now and both times the food has been very good (small incident with one dish but staff were excellent and meal changed as well as being advised that the chef agreed it was not as good as it should have been, which is...something you rarely get theses days). Staff are always very friendly and efficient. Atmosphere is great.
Will definitely be back.More
Good menu but we were there with a large group for a post conference business dinner so didn’t get to try the menu options. Entrees were either a pasta dish or stuffed calamari. I had the latter. Best part of the dish was the salad...greens garnish. Not sure what was in the calamari but it wasn’t very nice. The pasta looked extremely ordinary. My main was fish which looked great but was over cooked. Salad and roast potatoes on the side were good. Other main on offer was pork. Tiramisu was the dessert. Watery and not at all palatable. Wines were very good as was the service.
So overall this was a disappointing experience but it could be bc we were part of a group of about 25. I think if you were there as part of a regular group and could order of the menu and not have pre-prepared meals it would be quite different.More
Visited with significant other without a booking and were fortunate enough to be accommodated a table without issue.
House bread was delivered - focaccia, the real deal, best I’ve tasted.
We shared an entree of smoked meats - beautiful!
Significant other had a main of...lamb Gnocchi and I had pork ravioli - both lovely meals but not big serves.
We then shared a Tiramisu - probably the best I’ve tasted.
+ 2 beers and 2 wines = $160
Would certainly recommendMore
Expected more of this place, it looks smart from the outside but 50% of the food was average (but was removed from the bill). My wife “who will eat any pasta put in front of her” didn’t eat the gnocchi, rating it below our suburban...Italian.
And rated it under seasoned.
The $45 steak was nice, just above quality of a nice (trendy) pub steak.
Yeah, not a place to come back to based on this, so cannot recommend it.More
Bottega charges a lot for very good modern Italian food. With that in mind one expects perfection, and in general that's what they delivered for the four of us who went for dinner.
Their 'surprise me' wine, where you blind pick based on tasting notes,...was a really good idea. A bottle was presented covered in tinfoil, and we all had to guess what we were drinking before the big reveal. None of us got it right, but all of us loved it. Good value Chianti, even at $80.
Food was excellent, couldn't fault what was served, although our vegetarian was less than impressed to be served lamb in her pasta dish, which was promptly replaced with what she had ordered, together with some complimentary bread and dip to tide her over while it was being cooked so she didn't have to watch us eat.
Service mostly fine, although patchy in parts. Maybe someone had let them down at the last minute as it looked like they were one server short to cover the restaurant properly, and I doubt that they'd be skimping on stuff at an establishment with their reputation.
Would recommend - but speak clearly when ordering, and listen to the order when it is read back to you!More
We visited this restaurant on NYE 2019.
The menu appears varied and interesting. We tried many dishes and all seemed tasty.
The sword fish was dry and not at all palatable. The risotto was too salty but edible. The desserts offer a good selection and...appealing.
One major negative is the service.
I didn’t feel welcomed or made to feel that my patronage was important.
When we arrived our friends were already seated and had water but my partner and I waited at least ten minutes before a wait staff filled our glasses .
No staff greeted us and we certainly didn’t form any eye contact with the staff. No one explained the menu and the service appeared perfunctory.
Our orders we finally taken at 8.30 more than 40 minutes after arrival and our wine order wasn’t immediate either.
We had our starter around 9 pm.
This establishment has a good reputation but on this night it fell short.More
Went to Bottega for a Christmas dinner with a friend. Bottega has potential although service was slow and average. Not an overly busy. It was difficult to get the attention of the waiting staff. Braised Veal brisket ( two small pieces) very dry required more...sauce and less cooking. Not sure if it actually braised. It was not worth it for $40. Ricotta Cannoli ( two small pieces) for dessert was tasty however small for $9. It was over priced for what it was. Ginger bread pudding was light and full of flavour. Restaurant made gnocchi was delicious and better value (still $33 for course). Overall, disappointing.More
Well worth a try. Had a work lunch there. Service, food, decor and atmosphere were all good. Service was efficient but not rushed, food selection was classic with modern twists. Wine selection well suited to the menu. 3 courses , no rush and our clients...loved the lunch. RecommendedMore

Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air
of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
