Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I came to Laurent on two occasions in one day: one for breakfast (they do breakfast rolls and baguettes plus of course croissants) and the second because I liked the look of their cakes. Having recently been to Paris, though, I’ll say this: although touted as a French bakery, they’re a poor comparison for French patisseries.
For breakfast, I ordered a cheese and tomato croissant. It was rather dry and simply lacking in that buttery taste associated with croissants. The cheese tasted like what’s known as ‘credit card cheese’ or ‘plastic cheese.’ No better than what you’d get at a cheap roadside cafe like the ones attached to petrol stations.
The cakes look delicious so I came back later for cake. Maybe if I’d ordered a different one, I’d be writing a totally different review; the vanilla slice was very ordinary, though, with the custard very bland and the pastry fairly dry. Again, a poor comparison with French counterparts.
The reasons for the 3 star rating:
1) staff were very pleasant and friendly
2) hot chocolate was very nice
3) clean eatery
To sum up: if you’re looking for something like what you’d order in Paris, I’m sad to say that Laurent is not the place to go as it’s gone from a luxury treat to a French patisserie wannabe.

Visited Laurent Bakery while staying nearby. Very impressed by the variety and quality of the pastry items including the usual lunch rolls & croissants. After our first visit for coffee, we returned to enjoy a early evening beer - wines are also available and service is prompt & friendly !

Dropped into Laurent for morning tea and were confronted with an amazing array of products, all of which looked absolutely appealing.
The hardest decisions were what to have as they all looked good and after making our selections including tea and coffee, we sat down and relaxed and waited a short time before our order was delivered by the very efficient staff.
One of the better cafes in Melbourne and well worth a visit if in the City.

I am not sure if it has changed hands. The coffee was lousy and the Castelle was damp and almost inedible, completely different from what they used to previously serve. Obviously a different supplier. Lost one regular customer.

This is a must visit cafe for me every time I am in Melbourne. I am absolutely addicted to their French Style Apple Turnovers. But I have tried many of their other items and they are all outstanding in taste and quality. While the location is not necessarily conducive to a relaxed cafe experience, the food is worth going there even just for some takeaway. The coffee is good but so is it elsewhere in Melbourne, so you would not go there for the coffee but the pastries alone.

We needed a quick breakfast and whilst unable to queue at a extremely popular patisserie nearby we stopped here. The staff were friendly and the range good . It also smells so great. For me the coffee was just ok but my teenager was happy.

$16 for an inauthentic French baguette with a quarter of a hard avocado and cheap salad inside. The best bit was they toasted it. God knows how diabolical it would’ve tasted untoasted. I had to take it back and get a refund. Melbourne is full of great bread roll lunches I don’t know why I chose this place. I guess I was going to get something exotic. Absolutely terrible .5/10 only because the poor staff was nice

Pan au Chocolate overcooked and dried out, asked for a long black with hot milk, got cold milk, this has happened on numerous occassipns. Had to get a refund last time I was here as my iced coffee was made but not brought to my table1. Watched numerous staff members push it aside. This is the Camberwell branch

We booked our hotel room without breakfast knowing that Laurent was nearby. Amazing almond croissant and quite possibly the best hot chocolate in Australia awaited and didn’t disappoint. We’ll likely be back tomorrow morning....

The decor is pleasant and the atmosphere good. I chose a baguette and a coffee. The baguette was exceptional, but messy, with the filling stacked on top. The coffee was good, but not great. Water was not offered, but was available for self service if you knew where to look.

Quaint with exceptional array of pastries & lunch options to choose from. Staff are courteous & impeccably dressed in their uniforms. 2 levels to choose from plus outdoor lane seating. My coffee & almond crossiant were spot on and took me back to Paris. Well worth a visit.

Just dropped in not knowing anything about this place. We were pleasantly rewarded. My partner had an éclair framboise and a cappacino. I had the mietta and a hot chocolate. Altogether a pricey but worth it 28$. The cakes were divine and the drinks as good as we have had in Melbourne. Definitely returning.

I hadn’t been here for many years. I walked in and it was almost empty Ordered coffee and a roll. Coffee came quickly but after 20 no roll. 1 went to counter it was still in the fridge not in toaster. I asked for money back .. got it but they charged me for coffee. Now I know why it was empty at 12.30.

Got a little lost on the way to Albert park, so popped in here for a coffee, while we got our bearings. We also had a pastry, which was absolutely amazing. The coffee was pretty good too! My wife had a hot chocolate, which was truly lovely. What a treat! We left revived and in the right direction!

Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
