We visited as a group for dinner. The decor is atmospheric and staff were polite. We were disappointed that on our visit the kitchen were out of lamb, one of the key dishes. The starter plates were quite stodgy and uninspiring and the mains were average at best. Neither course was served particularly hot, which added to the tepid-at-best food... More

I am currently checking out different cafes and bars in Melbourne, even though I've been working in town for years. What a fun find this one was. I went there at 12 and it only opens then so it wasn't yet busy but that suited me fine as I just wanted a diet coke in the sunshine in a bit... More

A group of 16 of us attended a dinner. We started on the rooftop which was fine but we had to squeeze around the table it would have been uncomfortable to eat. We moved down to level 1 and could sit around the table with comfort. Took awhile to take our meal orders. When the meals came only 13 people... More

On a busy street, in the heart of the city, lost in a sea of street signs, you could easily miss the long flight of stairs leading up to Sahara - this would be a great shame. The street becomes an afterthought as you make your way up to the restaurant on the first level, or the rooftop bar further... More

We had a great meal in a friendly atmosphere, would highly recommend the chicken kebab and the veggie tagine, both were full of flavour and came out quickly. It's a small entrance, up a set of stairs between two shops, but worth the effort to find. The bar on the roof has an incredible view as well. A perfect last... More

Basically a middle eastern restaurant with a rooftop bar. Very limited selection of beers, and didn't really warm to the atmosphere. The decor is nice, but not really a place I'd visit too often. Can also rent shishka pipes.

We enjoyed a lovely meal at Sahara. Highly recommend the dips for entree and the lamb tagine with cous cous. The meat was cooked beautifully and the whole meal was amazing. Great service with very helpful and bubbly staff. Highly recommended for a great meal out.

At the top of a narrow stairway lies a fabulous little restaurant with a great atmosphere, attentive staff and some awesome food. Went for dinner and had a shared banquet. It was amazing. This is the second time I have been to Sahara, once with my brother and it was great, and then to impress a business associate. It worked... More

Dinner for 5 on a Friday night. Nice ambiance and styling. Food was mostly great. All of it was delicious. For the 5 of us we ordered the Sahara mixed grill, calamari, lamb tagine and Sahara salad with prawns. Food arrived in a timely manner and was all tasty. The only letdown was the Sahara salad. We asked for it... More

After change of management due to lack of foot traffic, attempt has been to get as much out of the customers as possible. Food is still pretty good but some of the items mentioned on the menu were not available. We were there on a Friday for lunch. At the time there were another four customers in the restaurant. It... Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
