I wrote this elsewhere so hope it’s ok for me to share it here. Back in 2016, we visited Eau de Vie for the first time and we were incredibly impressed. More than 8 years later, we returned. The fact EDV remains a busy and well-established institution is a testament to its approach. And we thoroughly enjoyed our time that we came twice - the second time we brought our Canadian friends. As the place is busy, it’s important to make a reservation before 10:00, especially if you want to be seated at the bar and watch how some of the drinks are made (and some are a bit of a spectacle). We did this the first time, and we were glad we did, as even at 5:00 on a Tuesday the place started to fill. The cocktails and mocktails we had were fun, diverse, and sometimes complex. We appreciated the staff explaining the drink and the process involved. The service was impeccable. On the second occasion, the staff remembered my wife and me, and they gave us a d our friends a complimentary starter, which was light and refreshing. We had the Everything Board, which was well presented and had a nice array of meat, cheeses, bread and crackers, olives, and condiments. A bit more cheese would have been appreciated. Our cocktails again were very good. Don’t expect resort-like sizes, but then again don’t expect water-down drinks. They were complex, fun, and a couple surprisingly refreshing. For whisky lovers, download Eau de Vie’s app, as they have over 350 varieties. We didn’t order any whisky’s but I have browsed the app. Great place that we look forward to visiting again and introducing our friends to, including those who live in Naarm.

Eau De Vie is an amazing bar that serves a variety of drinks and snacks. The bar is stylish and cozy, with a secret entrance and a dimly-lit atmosphere. The staff is attentive and professional, and the drinks are inventive and tasty. They also have a cheese and charcuterie board that complements the drinks. Eau De Vie is a fantastic bar that I would highly recommend.

A great bar with heaps of character. The cocktails are designed to impress and it was just as good watching others get theirs as it was getting ours. No more expensive than other cocktails in the city. Around 24 to 30 dollars each. They do serve snacks and food but most groups seems to have one or two cocktails and then move on to another venue. Would also be a great place to finish up a special night. I would highly recommend. Ps there is no signage at all on the door. Just a plain brown door. We had to ask to find it.

I recently attended a cocktail masterclass at Eau De Vie which was paid for in advance. On arrival at the event, the waiter asked would we prefer still or sparkling water, the inference being that it was part of the package we had paid for. He did NOT ask ¨would you like some water?” which is how the question should have been asked if an additional charge was to be made and the fact there was an additional charge for water was never mentioned. Each person received less than half a small glass of water - several of us commented that we would have appreciated a refill of water in between each of the cocktails, but this was never offered. On leaving the venue, we were CHARGED AN ADDITIONAL $60 FOR WATER. When we challenged this additional charge we were told that several bottles of water had been consumed. I find this very difficult to understand, given the size of our party and the amount of water each person received. I only consumed one of the cocktails, as they were all so very sweet, so I had full awareness and have full recollection of the amount of water we were served - it appears to me that Eau De Vie may well serve the most expensive water in town!

Horrific service ! A great venue for a drink maybe .. however after being seated at 6.45pm (our booking time) we waited nearly 45 minutes to place a drink and food order. We asked waiters numerous times if we could order, only to be told they were short staffed. We finally ordered around 7.30pm - 2 drinks (which came out quickly) and the chef’s tasting menu. Entrees were served reasonably quickly but we then waited again and kept asking for the next course(s). We finally also managed to order 2 glasses of wine and were told those would be our last drinks, as our booking time allocation (I assume 2 hours) was nearly expired... BUT we still hadn’t been served our main course !! After asking again for our main course we finally received it at 8.30pm. We then felt rushed and were handed the bill without even the offer of another drink !! Missed opportunity for them to sell more. We had only 2 drinks in nearly 2.5 hours... madness on their part. A great atmosphere completely ruined by really poor service. Disappointed!!

After much searching we found an unmarked door, opened it, and voila we were transformed back to 1920’s prohibition America. Our waiter explained the cocktails in his lovely Scottish accent and was very attentive. What a lovely place to start the evening.

Fabulous little gem of a bar, hidden away down a side street, dark curtains giving the feel of it being a speakeasy or a prohibition bar. It is very popular and I am unsure if you can book or not but if you can I suggest that you do as there is otherwise a queue to get in which does go down quickly but if you have dinner reservations elsewhere it would put you under pressure to get in and out quickly so just something to bear in mind. The cocktails are a little on the expensive side (around $22-$25 each depending on what you have) but they are really high quality and tasty and have a story to tell so I would definately tell you to give this place a go. If not just for an instagram post alone!!!

Come here not for just a drink rather to experience it. Choices of whiskey is beyond mentioning... some names are true rare. Their best offer is probably the flights where you can sample 5-7 drinks from a range starting from Low Land and all the way to Speyside

My husband and I love speakeasies. In Melbourne we found a great one in a hidden alleyway, Eau de Vie. This little place was so hidden that we passed by it at least 3 times before finally asking someone where it was. There are no markings, but when you enter the unmarked wooden door you’re in for a real treat. It is straight out of the 1920’s prohibition era. The bar is beautiful with lots of little nooks, crannies and snugs. We chose to sit at the long table down the middle where there was open seating. This is where we had some creative drinks, and met some really fun people. Eau de Vie is a classy little bar with a very big whiskey menu, as well as other spirits, wines and beers, and food. I tried the Smoky Rob Roy, which was out of this world good! We tried the Wiser Whiskey, a very smooth whiskey that I really have to try to get at home now! Ask to get a sneak peek at their hidden whiskey room.

This was a very special night with great food, fabulous cocktails, and the best service I have experienced. I learned so much from our wonderful host/waiter as he walked us through our spectacular evening of joy and happiness. An impression was made on us. I am looking forward to returning for a repeat performance.

A must visit place! Hidden behind the secret door in a small laneway, you enter a whole other world. Everything it promises, and more! The food was sublime and drinks were intriguing, entertaining and delicious. The Smokey Rob Roy and Honey Butter Old Fashioned were favourites. The service is also impeccable. Look for an unmarked large brown door with a gold handle - once you see it, you can’t miss it, but you need to know what you’re looking for!

What an incredible find!! I booked this for a birthday celebration for my husband and it didn't disappoint. The theatre of the cocktails was something else and we were incredibly impressed with the knowledge of the staff - there are A LOT of whisky and drink choices and they knew everything about everything! The food was plentiful and tasty and the ambiance spot on.. we were a touch challenged on where to find it, but once we knew where the secret squirrel door was, it was smooth sailing from there... We couldn't recommend it more highly - we will be back!

Now this was a lovely night out doing a Degustation Menu along with Festive Cocktails in the EdV Library. The food, the drinks and the service were great. Many thanks to Brodie who took us through the evening with great service and some great stories. A wonderful experience.

This was a fantastic venue for a long awaited date night. We had a private booth, that was in close proximity to others, but it didn't feel like it. The sophisticated 1920s venue, with a wonderful dim-lit ambience offered a magnificent menu, accompanied by a large variety of polished cocktails that provided theatre. Staff were very knowledgeable and professional, their attire suited the venue. Absolutely stellar night. This is a perfect venue for any occasion, couple or group.

This beautiful bar delivered a mix of ambiance, knowledge, range of drinks and wonderful service. Thx Is to Harrison for his perfect cocktails (including his first Old Cuban which he nailed) and I think Sam (memory’s hazy) for his superb whiskey recommendation. We will return for sure 😊

Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
