About
Bistrot d'Orsay has been situated in picturesque Collins Street for 20 years, in an area regarded as the ‘Paris End’. The interior is instantly evocative of the French capital with trompe l’oeil ceiling and a towering vintage French poster adorning the dining room. Dark wood paneling and soft lighting completes the picture. Lunch and dinner menus are provençal Mediterranean with French bistro classics such as bouillabaisse and crème brûlée all prepared with flair. Dishes such as seafood linguini and risotto complement the Mediterranean style. With a spectacular view of the ornate Regent Theatre directly opposite, Bistrot d’Orsay can lay claim to one of the best views of any restaurant in Melbourne. The bistro has a multi-award winning, extensive wine list with expertly chosen selections from the best international and Australian/NZ regions.

On walking through the doors we thought we were actually in a little French restaurant in the middle of Paris... We had an early dinner before going to the theatre. Food beautifully presented with prices you would expect, service exceptional - our waiter Matt who was very attentive and very happy to explain dishes and answer our questions regarding the menu. We cannot wait to visit again!

Stumbled across this place when touring the city with my partner. Valentine’s Day evening and fortunate enough to secure a last minute booking on another’s cancelation. Was impressed from the get go. Great staff and a genuine, cosy ambience. The Waiter, on our request made recommendations on wine and food and did not disappoint. Food and wine were without fault. Don’t miss this Melbourne, French inspired gem!

Bistrot D’Orsay and the Rouge So last Friday evening was the night to visit the Regent Theatre once again and see Moulin Rouge on its return to Melbourne. First, of course, was the need for a delicious dinner and we chose what is probably one of Melbourne’s underrated gems that consistently provides great food and a relaxed atmosphere. Bistrot D’Orsay has been at 144 Collins Street for 26 years and is perfectly located directly across the road from the Regent and next door to the Athenaeum Theatre. This bistrot by definition is a small restaurant, serving moderately priced simple meals in a modest setting. That underplays it somewhat as I rather like the setting. I also really like the team who always make you feel welcome and are engaging with their smiles and exquisite accents. The food is quite delicious. It is not a big menu but still manages to provide enough options for vegiequarians such as us. The shared entrée of Pan Seared Scallops on a leek and green pea purée, served with micro herbs, fried capers and truffle oil was cooked to perfection. My favourite dish followed which is the Potato Gnocchi pan-fried with sautéed field mushrooms, chard, hazelnuts, vincotto, truffle oil & shaved Parmesan. This was accompanied by a side of Iceberg lettuce, tarragon, shallot & mustard vinaigrette, simplistic but very freshening. No room for dessert this evening as it was time for the show but we left fully satisfied with a wonderful meal and with a smile on our faces compliments of the friendly team at Bistrot D’Orsay. You may not have heard of this one but I do encourage you to check it out. You will need to book, by phone. There’s a modern day challenge for you. Enjoy!

I’ve been to Bistro D’Orsay many times over the years . This occasion was the last. Greasy, minuscule eye fillet steak supplemented by another cut of meat to make up for the size on the plate. Arrive at midday. Two of us. With a main course only ordered, food arrived at our table at 1.15pm. We had to ask twice for a status and neither times did the waiters get back to us with what the delay was. The fries that came out were fitting of being wrapped in newspaper. The restaurant smell was horrible. Their kitchen vents out onto the footpath on Collins Street. By the smell in the restaurant clearly no more. The restaurant smells like a greasy food truck cooking up some short order eggs and spam. It’s truly a horrible place that’s it’s transformed into. In desperate need of a makeover. It’s menu prices are purely reflective of its location and the real estate value. There are other French bistros in the area that surpass it by a mile and at the same price point. Despite all this the restaurant was full. How bizarre

A hidden gem! What w wonderful surprise to discover after many visits to Melbourne over the years, this absolutely wonderful French restaurant in the heart of Melbourne! We were looking for an early dinner before going to the theatre and were delighted when we phoned the Bistrot D’Orsay and offered a table for the time we asked. The ambience as you enter the restaurant is truly A transportation into France. The welcome was warm and genuine and the meals truly lovely. The menu is perfect and covers all tastes as well as catering for my wife who is a coeliac. There was no problem in adapting the menu for her. We were truly grateful for the kindness of the wait staff and now that we have found this exquisite restaurant will be making return visits on our return to Melbourne. This is an authentic French dining experience not to be missed.

Our family of 4 went for a special dinner at the end of our Melburne holiday, and the restaurant did not disappoint. Whilst not all traditional "French" food, the food was absolutely fantastic, and the service even better. My daughters have insisted we must come back next time we are in Melbourne.

A close friend suggested this place as one of the best French restaurants in Melbourne and he wasn’t wrong. We came here after watching Moulin Rouge to celebrate our anniversary and really hag a wonderful meal. I was surprised the helping were generous as the girls struggled to finish their meals. Next time share the starters!! The veal, the steaks and the coq au vin we’re all very good. The only downside is our waiter looked new and didn’t know the menu very well. Had to keep on asking the other waiters answers to our queries.

This restaurant is conveniently located very close to the Grand Hyatt Melbourne. The food, the service and the atmosphere is completely exquisite, and very reminiscent of bistros previously visited in France. From entrées to mains and luscious desserts each course was excellent, beautifully presented and magnificent. my wife enjoyed the iceberg lettuce salad with tarragon vinaigrette, and had the entrée portion of the bay. I also enjoyed the iceberg salad and the steak frites. The side dish of green beans almondine was beautifully cooked and the pear tart tatin arrived hot at the table with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. Service was gracious and professional and dining time was at a leisurely pace at our request. A superb evening from start to finish. You won’t want to miss this spot, but reservations are a must.

This restaurant is situated next door to the Athenaeum Theatre, so is perfect if you are seeing a show there. The food is delicious, staff friendly and helpful. The mushroom risotto was the best I have had. The steak was cooked to perfection. If they know you are seeing a show the staff ensure you have your meal quickly. We will be back

This is a very good French restaurant. I enjoyed it much more than some of the other French restaurants in and around Melbourne. Excellent cooking, delicious flavours, efficient and friendly service and we were served so promptly prior to seeing a show next door. Will definitely recommend and visit again.

What a wonderful place to stumble upon. Didn’t read any reviews just walked in. Had lunch here with my mother before a show and it was magnificent. We certainly don’t get this kind of food or service out in the country. The food was scrumptious. The slow cooked lamb shoulder was everything a girl could want. Rich and decadent. Very authentically French. Thank you what I great experience.

This lovely, atmospheric gem retains its form, and charm, post lockdown . Dining recently there was a great buzz, the food we had remembered from previous visits ( Coq au Vin with white wine rather than red) Confit de Canard and especially the superb iceberg salad , were all excellent. One is packed in, just as in Paris or Lyon, it’s not a place for large tables IMV , best no more than 4 . A bit noisy but overall THE most satisfying experience. One request. The food just cries out for a Beaujolais rather than a Rhone wine !!

Atmospheric little boîte that resembles a Parisian bistro. Menu is French-tourist (steak tartare, coq au vin) and wine list is spare, but the mussels in the bouillabaisse were lightly cooked to perfection. And the staff graciously seated my solo even after I was a half-hour late (news flash: Collins St not the same as Little Collins). I’d eat here again.

Had a three course dinner before a show. Awesome experience. Staff were highly attentive and food was delicious. Extensive wine and drinks menu as well. With a great choice of wines by the glass which allows you to pair wines with each course. They have been operating for 26 years. It is easy to see why.

If you have never been to France and don't mind a waiter who ignores the female at the table and tries, unsuccessfully, to be funny towards the male you may find this restaurant quaint. If not, I would suggest you avoid it. The food is very average, but the service is worse. Very little is authentic French, even the French speaking waiter.

Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
