Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Absolutely beautiful food, delivered promptly by courteous staff in a wonderful atmosphere. We came across this restaurant by chance. It was packed with people and no wonder. We anticipated that there would be a long wait for our meals but this was not the case.... The Max chicken was delicious and the pasta and the steak good as well.More

We were visiting from Hobart to see family. By the time we had checked in (Good Friday) we were hungry and wanting to find somewhere fast. We were staying close to Hardware Lane and had heard great things about this strip. We wandered down, 8...yearly in tow, and found Max. After being welcomed in to a table, we were attended to by friendly staff. A great menu was offered, and the food came promptly considering how busy they were. The food was amazing and the waiters were great and bantered well with my child’s outgoing nature. Kids menu was a welcome addition We enjoyed the food and atmosphere so much we came back on Sunday with family for lunch again. Just as good - we will be back when we return to Melbourne again.More

Situated on Hardware Lane, the vibe is cool and buzzy. Lots of people, street buskers, and a cool Melbourne vibe. Max is pumping! Heaving with diners , so this is a great place for friends to catch up. The menu is well priced, the Chicken...Max is a great choice. Service is fast and friendly. You can book ahead, but they always seem to find a table is you arrive without a reservation. Well worth a visit.More

Great Italian food coupled with perfect service! Seated inside, outside is nice ambiance if the weather is good. Ted who served me (mainly) was just wonderful; kind, funny & got the basics spot on! The rest of the team were also super friendly. Service for...food was super quick on both visits, like lightning speed! The creamy garlic prawns is divine & the pizza bases were out of this world! House baked sticky date that was delicious, you may want an extra dollop of ice cream! Would be worth booking for larger groups 4 or more especially Wed onwards as it got super busy past 6pm - you wont want to miss out.More

Great service, great food. Very busy laneway restaurant. We arrived just before 6pm and got a table for 3. Cocktails and wine ordered and then bruschetta. Mains were not far behind with another bottle of wine. All staff very courteous and friendly. Even though it...was a quick turnover, as we saw people leave and vacate tables only for them to be filled again, there was no pressure for us to go. After dessert and some complementary shots we left appeased. Highly recommend the gnocchi Primavera. Will definitely visit next time we are in Melbourne.More

Came here for lunch on a nice day and sat outside. Pleasant staff. The two of us ordered chicken burger and chips (we were hungry) as well as the stuffed chicken breast with potato rosti and broccoli. The burger and chips were very good although...the chicken was very slightly overdone. Chips were very good indeed. The stuffed chicken breast wasn’t hot and just slightly warm. It had clearly been cooked a little while back and kept warm awaiting a customer. Would have been nice if it was hot but it was tasty. Broccoli was slightly too al dente (too hard). It was a pleasant lunch. Many of the dishes coming out of the kitchen did look good.More

An off the cuff visit to a very popular restaurant. The food was simply outstanding and our server, Alan, was exceptional, friendly and efficient. Highly recommend the char-grilled kangaroo - tender & cooked to perfection.

Great atmosphere and food with attentive and friendly staff. I couldn't ask for more! I took my teenage children and elderly parents on a trip to Melbourne and wanted to celebrate the end of our trip with a classic Melbourne dining experience. Dining at Max...Bar outside on Hardware Lane with a busking guitarist nearby was absolutely on point.More

Awful place. We were served up a disgusting pizza, shouted at by a staff member about the pizza which was on a plate floating on an oily, watery base. This is because the 1st one brought to us which was supposed to have a garlic...base had no garlic taste, very dry, no mozzarella, three quarters topped with shaved ham, a few anchovies & minimal mushrooms & lots of halved baby tomatoes all over? They removed it then gave us a pizza with a soggy wet base, no ham, mozzarella that you could actually see, and little else. We ate half of one slice each, got up and were made to pay for the disgusting food and told to have a nice day. It was 6pm. The bathroom serves both male & female. 2 toilet cubicles. They stank! Don't think this is a clean place and if they read this they should clean their toilets more often, and learn how to make a decent pizza. Shouldn't be difficult. Don't skimp on ingredients when they offered on the menu! Not recommended at all.More

A great find in Hardware Lane... the Lane was busy & full of life with live music playing. Really impressed with the food, delicious Italian meal, pastas, pizza & steak. Generous servings. Could not fault it. Dessert was a hit too, not overly sweet. This...place was busy & lively. But the service was on point. No long waits. Always wait staff around. Guys, you are doing a really good job. Delicious food, prompt & friendly service. Ticks my boxes.More

Found this gem down a side street. It was really busy and food coming out looked good. Even though it was a Saturday night and hadn't booked they found us a table within 5 minutes and to say it was busy, the service was quick....Ordered an Ortalana pizza, spaghetti napoli and chicken max and all were delicious. Clean plates all around and my 10 year old daughter is fussy with her pasta. Also had sticky toffee pudding with ice cream and strawberries for dessert which was amazing. Not too stodgy or heavy. Fantastic atmosphere with a guy singing further down. Did a great rendition of Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day. Would highly recommend.More

Could not fault this restaurant! My partner and I stumbled across it down alley way and saw that it was the busiest restaurant so decided to try it. The best service with friendly and accommodating staff, the food was served quickly and immediately so it...was nice and hot. The food had so much flavour and it tasted extremely authentic. So glad we found this place and would definitely recommend it to othersMore
