Why does a reasonably good restaurant persist in making a point of difference their refusal to serve alcohol? Surely it's reasonable to match good food to good wine. I can see no point in patronising this eatery.

Nice atmosphere outside and nicely presented food. Good place to visit though food is more on the lighter side

Met a young friend at this bustling (ex warehouse) now Boulangerie, Chez Dré, for brunch. It wasn't too busy & we got a great courtyard table, under a large, black umbrella. It's an inconspicuous entrance, down an alley off Coventry Street... well worth a visit & known for its all day Brunch menu. Gorgeous array of French inspired cakes &... More

Our daughter took us here for lunch. The menu was different and the food was wonderful but fun. Salads delivered in a jar, a burger to die for and a range of interesting and different foods that all were so nice.

Enjoyed the venue and coffee but the avocado on toast was not up to scratch. Seemed like it was out of a tube. Feta was nice but for the price this dish is not to be recommended. Great wait staff.

Very busy during breakfast hours. I tried the french toast - brioche with berry compote and also with a side of oat gelato, which was rather unique. Nothing to rave about, but was a competent dish. Also tried the chocolate and passionfruit, and another hazelnut praline cake, and both were good (albeit small and pricey).

Invited - we had breakfast there. The posched eggs were okay. The baguette was really French, the black bread with salmon was very good, the waitress down to the point. Sitting inside was fair enough. You shouldn't be more than four people. We were five and had to sit on the big table, which is for internet users.

There are much better places than Chez Dre in South Melbourne. I asked locals after my recent visit their opinion, all said it is not what it used to be. I had their breakfast omelette and it was a dried tastless circle dropped on a plate. Nothing like a French omelette should be. I believe the first thing they teach... More

Never disappoints - maybe because the charcoal toast wasn't on the menu. But so many creative choices like the green tea poached pears means you are always delighted to be at Chez Dre.

Gets busy weekends and mid morning but perfect a business breakfast with the standards croque madame and avo luxe both great, but some interesting extras on the menu and many seating options. Great on a sunny day if Melbourne provides but also warm and chic in winter

Staying in South Melbourne

Neighbourhood Profile
South Melbourne
South Melbourne hosts the city’s oldest continuous market, founded in 1867. Rows of neatly arranged fruit, vegetables and flowers splash yellows, greens and reds along the entire perimeter, where the whole neighbourhood gathers for Saturday feasts. Inside the hall, shoppers hover over the mouth-watering displays of delicatessens and specialty food shops. Further in, a bazaar full of giftware, clothing, and kitchen utensils completes the scene. Take a break to walk the wide and shady streets and stroll along the Victorian-era heritage terrace houses. But return to the market in time for some paella, simmering in three large frypans on the footpath and served straight onto your plate.
