My partner chose this place for my birthday to bring cuisine from home back to me, and I couldn't have expected better.
Alex took care of us for the evening, made us feel very welcomed and was also very professional; really great service.
We ordered the the escargots and pork rillettes that was on specials for our entrée, both were delicious and I hadn't had a nice rillette in too long.
For the mains we went with the Canard amd the Boeuf Bourginon, with confit potatoes and tomates à la Provençale on the side, all to share. Every single dish was a treat, and we both loved all of it. The duck was my favourite and I can't recommend it enough. We each had a glass of red to go with our mains, we simply asked for recommendation saying what sort of wine we enjoy (more sweet and fruity for her, more earthy for me) and they paired it perfectly with our food.
We then ordered the cheese board which was made of 3 cheeses I love: Fourme d'Ambert, Cantal and a nice brie, all very good and great to finish our wines.
Finally we ended the night with the Chocolate Fondant, perfectly balanced and wasn't too heavy, it was perfect to end the night, we were served complementary glasses to go with it.
One of the best French place I have been to, the staff is amazing, very welcoming and they all speak perfect French. This was an amazing experience and whilst the price is not that of an everyday lunch place, I would highly recommend it for any nice occasion.

Last night was our second visit to The French Brasserie to celebrate a special occasion. We selected this restaurant because we had amazing treatment the first time we visited two weeks ago. We love everything French and the Brasserie never fails to satisfy the most demanding connoisseur. The service makes the entire experience unforgettable. We were served by Emeline and the Manager who has a great sense of humor and makes you feel special guest. We had the fish

The French Brasserie wonderful, best food I've had for a long time. Wonderful service, making you feel like the only ones there, great atmosphere could actually sit and talk without trying to yell over the noise. The food was very fresh and beautifully presented, I had the fish of the day and it was cooked perfectly. The extra little touches will bring people back again and again, Bringing my partner here for his birthday. Can’t recommend highly enough!

“Unique as in “unlike anything else”.
When we arrived the owner bounded over to us like a big French puppy dog and welcomed us with gushing comments “désobligeant” that made us feel like a member of the family. The one that is thought to not understand French.
The Chef was obviously also in a playful mood. The French Onion Soup was cheekily disguised as a consommé and those of us who ordered the Moules Marinières were treated to our very own Prise Night. If you don’t have to crack open the shell with your knife to get to your Mussels then you will not fully appreciate them.
Our sense of being treated like Royalty grew when we were obviously served the Still Water of the Gods. Because, at a cost of $40.00, we assumed that that was what it was.
We marvelled at the Magic of the Numbers that was the Wine List. A comparison with Retail prices reveals its true wonder. And then there was the final bill. It took our breath away.
Who would have thought that such an unforgettable dining experience, full of gastronomic and monetary défauts, would cost a mere $175.00 a head? Sacré bleu et zut alors !!

Something was missing at this restaurant. Menu did not excite, service was slow and inattentive, food was just OK despite high prices, and atmosphere like being in a converted warehouse. Wanted to like this restaurant but left unexcited.

For me, French cuisine is so good that restaurants have to nail the dish preparation, presentation and service in order to be rated highly. This place fell short. We asked for Perrier, as per the menu, and were brought Pellegrino (not a biggy, but why have Perrier on the menu and not inform the customer of a substitute?). We had to ask for cutlery for one of starters. The mains arrived but we had to twiddle our thumbs waiting for the sides dishes. The food was OK but not delicious. Slightly annoying that we booked the main restaurant (you get a choice online) but were escorted to the mezzanine. Insist on the main restaurant if you want atmosphere.

French Basserie is our go to for flawless and exceptional French cuisine. Hadj and his wonderful staff make the environment warm, friendly and a favourite for a restaurant pick on a date night or dining with friends and family. This was my 3rd year in a row celebrating my birthday at French Basserie and even with covid restrictions, it was a delightful evening and didn’t change any of our previous dining experiences. I highly recommend the snails, beef bourguignon and really any dessert on the menu!!! 💕 thank you again Hadj for such impeccable hospitality and memorable dining experiences. We can’t wait to see you again Xx

The staff were warm, welcoming and insightful. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. My partner and I attended the restaurant for a very early dinner booking (5pm) due to other commitments later that night. Our waitress ensured that we were out of there on time, after a three course meal that definitely did not feel rushed.
Overall, we had a beautiful, romantic night, in a beautiful venue.

I recently attended a pre-wedding dinner at The French Brasserie on December 15, 2023, and unfortunately, I feel compelled to share my disappointing experience.
The setup of tables was subpar, with insufficient chairs for all guests, leading to discomfort throughout the evening. The service was notably poor, as it took an extended amount of time for the dinner to be served. Moreover, after dinner, there was confusion regarding the dessert service. Many guests, including myself, were expecting dessert, but instead, salad bowls and French fries were served late into the evening.
Even worse and more stressful, a considerable number of guests had already left the restaurant (due to the delays and confusion) by the time the dessert was finally served. I noticed that the waitress was leaving desserts on empty tables until I brought it to their attention. This mismanagement significantly detracted from the overall experience, leaving a lasting negative impression.
I believe it's crucial for the restaurant management to be aware of customer experiences, and I hope this feedback can contribute to improvements in the future.
Given my experience on that day, I regret to say that I cannot recommend your restaurant for hosting any future events or parties.

We had such a lovely birthday dinner here with friends. As soon as we stepped in the door we felt the genuine welcome and warmth of the French staff.
The freshly shucked oysters were delicious whilst others on the table really enjoyed the steak tartare and snails.
Being a Friday, I had fish for main. The serve was a bit small, possibly because it was slightly overcooked, but the sauce and accompanying vegetables complemented it so well it didn’t mar the dish. I heard the duck was melt in the mouth. I’d skip the roast potatoes and just stick with pommes frites.
The chocolate fondant was divine, best eaten leisurely and not shared!
So a 5? Yes, the staff made this dining experience and overall the food is worth going back for.

We wanted something special for our last night in Melbourne first restaurant looked like a Covid casualty, second had no tables for a couple but 3rd time lucky.
When we arrived we were greeted by gracious staff who said to please sit down while we get you a table. Within minutes we were taken to and seated at our table.
The atmosphere was terrific with all staff speaking fluent French that my high school French couldn’t keep up with! But they could also speak very good English !
We ordered the Mussell special and 6 snails thst we shared for entrees and they were superb ! Which I had asked for more bread to disk up the garlic sauce but resisted!
For mains we both had the Beef Bourguignon and we were not disappointed! Was done to perfection and didn’t need any sides to accompany!
We decided to have wines by the glass do we could have a white with the entrees and a ref for the main.
Desert we had the classic Brûlée with a pear brandy that didn’t disappoint!
Was well worth the cost and we would go back again if we are down there with time to enjoy

There are some restaurants that you visit once and then there are restaurants such as the fabulous French Brasserie that you can’t wait to return. Such has been our experience each time we visit Melbourne from Hobart. Not only is the food magnificent and truly a ‘taste fo France’, but the staff are wonderful and clearly love their work and want the evening with them to be the best they can possibly make it.
We were taken care of by Emeline this evening, who was a delight and made our meal all the more special. The wonderful Edge wished us farewell as we left. He too clearly loves his role.
Thank you to the fabulous chefs and all the staff at this brilliant corner of France in Flinders Lane. Melbourne. We loved our meal and will once again be sure to book another visit when in Melbourne.
The French Brasserie is an absolute treat! Authentically French!

My wife and I celebrated our 20th anniversary that coincides with Valentine’s day, at the French Brasserie. What an experience that was!. Dinner was booked at 7pm, at arrival we felt nothing but a warm welcome with a great smile by the owner himself. We were invited to a Kir royal (French cocktail) at the bar, whilst our table was getting ready. The restaurant's ambiance, including lighting, music, and decor, sets the mood for the dining experience. Not to mention that the French Brasserie is in one of the coolest parts of Melbourne, surrounded by cool pubs and cocktail bars. The dining experience and the food was just divine. The menu is of a true Brasserie, very French but not complicated with great wines. As an entrée, we had Escargots (snails in garlic and parsley butter), served at six each with a basket of crusty baguette. I frankly could have gone for a dozen. The main, Boeuf Bourguignon made with Beef cheeks / red wine sauce and mash. This was simply delicious and melting in the mouth. With the dessert, it was really a hard decision to make between (The Crème Brulé, the lemon Tarte. 3 French cheeses or Chocolate fondant). The Chocolate fondant was the pick and that was exquisite. The restaurant was very busy that night, yet the young French team of waiters and waitresses showed a superior level of service, every time we needed something. At the end of the night, the owner(a great character) came to us and ensured all went well and walked us to the door to say goodbye. A truly great night, great food, and great service. Thank you to the French Brasserie, we look forward seeing you again.

My husband and I will always dine here whenever we are in Melbourne, and after that last 3 years of COVID and lockdowns, we are so grateful that The French Brasserie is still around and providing an excellent experience. The service is excellent, the owner is a wonderful conversationalist and the food is so well cooked. We have been coming here for more than 10 years and will continue to return here each time we are in Melbourne.
Thank you for making my birthday (belated as you weren't open on my actual day) so special!

Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
