South Indian food in a far off location to fulfill gastronomic needs. HSB is located in CBD Melbourne is easily accessible . It provides wide variety of s. Indian dishes and the upkeep of quality n taste is commendable albeit slightly costlier compared to other Indian restaurants serving tandoor items. Nevertheless, its a delectable place.

Inconsistency is the biggest issue with this iconic chain of restaurants spread across the world. The only thing consistent is the Thali, rest is sheer luck, this time though, the Gun Powder Masala Dosa was pretty bad. Earlier 4/5 Disclaimer: Above ratings are strictly reserved for Food sans Filter Coffee. Finally, something Authentic Vegetarian Indian without modern twist or alteration. Under a typical Mess-like ambiance, Saravanaa Bhavan (a renowned name in the international market) lets the food talk.  Rava Dosa, Dosa, Masala Dosa, Bisibele Bhaat, Dahi Bhaat, etc  ....name anything and they give you no reason to complain...but for us, it was Saravanaa Special Meal Thali. Though a bit costly but suffice for 2 is complete meal in itself. Cherry on the Cake is Mango Lassi.  The worst among things ordered were Filter Coffee & Gulab Milkshake. Filter Coffee was not even close to the filter coffee we have back in India. Seemed like they had used to the local coffee powder for their concoction. Gulab (Rose) Milk Shake was tad too sweet.  Coming to the disappointment part as to why we  rated them on food and only food:  Every time we have been here, they have failed to provide us many things mentioned on the menu or accompaniments that should come with the food. It's better to have fewer things on the menu and do justice then to have everything and not being able to provide important things that are essentials for a restaurant that specialises in food from South India such as gunpowder idli, Rava Dosa, etc.   Service can get pretty chaotic but can totally understand the plight as it's forever crowded. Attendants go out of their way to provide us the satisfaction of dinning here. 0.5 out 4 is only for that bit.  Ideally, would have rated this one a 3 over 5 for the total experience but we certainly know that these are the things they can improve on. What we also don't want is the other foodies to deprive themselves of something as authentic and beautiful as the meal provided by Saravanaa Bhavan due to our review.   Stick to the South Indian Fare...that's where the flavors are.

After travelling half way around the world to get to Melbourne, all we wanted was some delicious vegetarian food to eat after the ghastly airplane food and then collapse in our hotel room and sleep. This spot was just a quick walk from our hotel and we love Indian food - so it was perfect. Perfectly unexpected! The food was so, so good, it was as though we had journeyed to India, not Australia. What a wonderful first meal in Melbourne! Highly recommend.

I am from Sydney and I ordered Vada pav, palak paneer and few other dishes. Vada pav - vada was burnt. Palak paneer - looked too artificial, paneer wasn't fried, no tadka. I would request the restaurant, please don't offer dishes, which you can't prepare in authentic way. Absolute disgrace in the name of north Indian dishes. Guys never ever try North Indian food in Saravana Bhavan, you will be very disappointed 😞

We were visiting from Mumbai and as South Indians selected Saravana expecting tolerable spice and heat. But OMG were we in for a shocker ! The heat level was fiery in all the dishes we ordered. We had ordered a mini dosa platter - Mysore dosa had hot 🔥 chutney slathered. The tomato and coconut chutney on the side were horribly spicy. A business lunch we ordered had EVERYTHING spicy including the two rice dishes , the two curries/sabzis all with spice and heat level to burn your innards. Since we left everything on the business thali , we ordered idli which also had two very spicy chutneys. Fortunately the sambhar was mild. We ordered chaas hoping to cool down our palates and guess what ? That was fired up with green chillies as well. Their menu app is pathetic. No option for what kind of spice and heat levels you'd prefer. Should have had atleast 3 levels. Mild , medium and high. So if you love spicy teekha teekha food pls visit. Or else ASK them loud and clear to turn down the heat levels.

Hidden way from the Main Street level of melbourne, you’d easily walk right past this awesome Resturant. With gorgeous old Melbourne charm gates, you make your way upstairs and are greeted by the wonderful staff, catering perfectly to the COVID changes we all need to follow. You need to log in, then they happily seated us. We scanned the menu, you then place your order and drinks through ordering on line and before you know it, your food has arriving. We ordered the masala dosa, the potato filling was soooooo delicious. The donut is Medhu Vada, that on its own it’s a meal, very deceiving, very filling. I was full with eating this as our started and struggled to finish our main. Highly recommend you visit this Resturant, you won’t be disappointed. l’ll definitely be a returning patron 💚🌿

The quality of food served is average as compared to the other Sarvanna Bhavan's in India & Middle East. With the new online ordering at the table, where you place the orders while sitting at your table and the kitchen receives order and prepares the food, I don't think they are reading and following the food comments mentioned. (I had ordered for a plain dosa and ghee roast masala dosa and had mentioned in the comments/ notes for the plain dosa to be soft and the masala on side for the ghee roast masala dosa - however the plain dosa came crispy and the masala dosa came with the masala inside the dosa) On the brighter side the service staff is cheerful and bright. However they can definitely up their game.

This restaurant is a blessing for people who want real authentic indian vegetarian food, both north indian and south Indian. If you go at lunch time, it will be busy and may have to wait to get seated. Thali food is really tasty and full.

I was here for brunch , and boy , did they do justice! Yes .food was warm , not hot , fresh & quite good in taste. The sambar, chutneys, idli and dosa, all were great. A special mention to 2 team members - Anna & Gourav , who were so humble , when I complimented their service & patience . They both are an asset to the business and should be recognised & applauded . Thankyou for going above & beyond .

OK, let me say I am partial to HSB. I picked the hotel where we stayed based on the proximity to this place. We ate here 4 of the 6 days we were here for a late lunch. Had the HSB Special Thali. Every day the food was excellent. The service very friendly and very accomodative to families. The menu is the standard menu in all HSB restaurants. This is the 10th country we are trying out HSB: US, Canada, India, Singapore, Dubai, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Stockholm, and now Melbourne! The standard is the same! Excellent!

If you are in Melbourne, one restaurant you shouldn’t miss going to is Saravana Bhavan. Great food and prompt service. One thing to note though is that they do get busy and we had to wait to be seated. Its worth the wait as the food was superb.

The paper roast masala with mango lassi...need I say more? Cheap, cheerful and filling- don't expect fancy decor, it's pretty average but the food makes up for it in spades. Also had some of the cauliflower balls and the cheese filled naan...Great place to get your vegetarian hit.

Great south India food with authentic taste. I missed my mom's Dosa and had that here. I stayed one week in melbourne and most breakfast I had there. Staffs were excellent. Great value for money.

Shocking experience. Will never return. Very limited for Jain eaters. Mango Lassi was warm with 1x IceCube and priced at $7 . DONT ORDER THE PANEER DISHES. Worst I’ve had and can make better at home. Staff walk around serving and getting you wearing hairnets and blue plastic cleaning gloves. Horrible. Can’t get attention. Seem to look into space a lot walking around. Sticky tables and seats and floors. I can’t remember the last time I had such an awful dining experience!!!

Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
