About
Nestled amidst cobblestones & street art of the Melbourne central business district/Flinders Lane precinct, A Hereford Beefstouw offers a relaxed Nordic menu that celebrates high quality steak in a Danish designed setting. Our speciality is steak and dry ageing. We raise Hereford cattle on our farm, and we dry age these and other cuts in our state of the art dry ageing facility. Our team of butchers then expertly prepares the meat into steaks. Generally we age for a minimum 40 days, and sometimes out to 100, before cooking with simplicity and care.

I give this rating based on two visits (both client dinners) to Hereford, so have averaged it out. My first visit would have been in June and it was amazing. We shared a tomahawk and a rib-eye between 3 of us. The rib-eye was decent but the tomahawk was nothing short of sensational. Honestly one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. The fat content, the seasoning, the cut and the way it was cooked were all perfect. A colleague of mine who is a passionate lover of steak also agreed that it was one of the best steaks he’d ever had too. The entrees and sides that we had were also very good. I finally got to go back there this week and I was so excited to go after how good it was the first time. The waitress came over and almost the first words out of her mouth were that they have no tomahawks. My heart sank. We ordered a chateaubriand and a cote de beouf to share between 3, to subsequently be told 5 minutes later that they didn’t have any chateaubriand either. That was pretty deflating. The waiter explained that their supplier had chosen to sell those cuts overseas as they could make more money. So we ended up with two eye fillets, and the cote de beouf plus sides between the 3 of us. The steaks were decent but nothing to write home about. The highlight was probably the wine. We chose The Alice by Greenock creek at $95 per bottle and enjoyed every drop of both bottles we had. I’m tempted to give this place another go in the hope that it hits the heights of first time (which was worthy of 5 stars)

So, travelling a lot, I always pick one steakhouse in a city to follow my foodie passion for steak and today it was the turn of A Hereford Beefstouw in downtown Melbourne. Being offered an early evening table despite not shorts & T-shirt and no booking was a good start. The restaurant has a nice feel about it and I always enjoy an open kitchen… The Caesar salad was delicious and a really good size, sadly the same cannot be said of the steak. A medium rare sirloin on the bone arrived and while it was cooked nicely and tasted great, it would have been barely 250-300gr (uncooked)… having watched a few of the huge Tomahawks being cooked, I suspect I was just unlucky in the day to get an undersized steak… it happens. I purchase & cook a lot of steak, so I know what 400gms should look like! What was more disappointing was the response of two of the senior members of staff who asked me how my meal was, and then showed no interest in an honest answer. If you don’t want to know… don’t ask! A third recognised there was a little issue and did offer a genuine apology. (I wasn’t looking for anything more!)… Overall, I would still recommend the restaurant, as it’s has a nice set up, the service was mostly good and most of the steaks they were serving looked spot on…

The food was bang on. I got the ribeye on the bone and it was cooked perfectly. Sides were great too. We asked what steak was served at the table across from us and was told Rump. We were suspicious it was rump but the waiter was adamant. So hubby ordered the rump and was really disappointed. Not even similar in size of what we saw. Lobster tail could’ve been served with a white sauce but it came out naked. We had to keep flagging down staff for service/drinks etc. Glad we tried it but probably won’t go back.

4 of us sat down and it took 15-20 minutes to be served. We wanted to order two tomahawks but they were unavailable (we had a 12pm booking so expected to have all options available). We ordered the only alternatives rib eyes which two were meant to be medium rare, came out rare ( this was the worst part of the experience). The sauces came out 5 minutes after steaks came out. One of the mushroom sides they forgot about. For the $600 plus we spent, we expected better. Please do better.

I dined here for dinner together with friends during a recent holiday in Melbourne. We had an early dinner, at around 6pm, so this restaurant wasn't crowded at that time. Each of us order different cuts of steak and all our steaks were cooked to perfection, exactly as we had wanted! And the beef was of high quality. We also ordered some side dishes to be shared, and all the sides were very tasty too. We didn't drink any alcoholic beverages because we had young children with us, but they have an impressive with menu and a well-stocked bar at the front of the restaurant. This is a high-end steakhouse but the quality of the food is worth every penny that you pay. If you are looking for a great steakhouse in Melbourne City, this is place is for you!

The food was spectacular however the service was a let down, upon arrival the staff assumed I was with the person they were assisting in front of me & did not seem to notice that he went & sat down & I was still standing waiting for service. I had to tell two staff members I was not with him. My friend had already arrived & was seated before my arrival and had already been served a drink. I was eventually led to the vicinity of my table & the waiter pointed at where I was to sit, no drinks were offered to me until wait staff came to take our food order. I felt the service was quite rushed. For the standard of the meal & cost I expect wait staff to be much more attentive to their customers.

I had been looking forward to dinner here since I booked a month or so ago. I'd been reading the menu and wanted to try the 100 day dry aged steak, but when we got there and sat at our table I was disappointed to find there was a set Valentine's menu. When I made my booking this was not mentioned and in the days and weeks leading up to the booking I did not receive any notification this is what was going to be happening. If i had received notification I would have quite simply changed booking nights and gone elsewhere for Valentine's. As it was too late to try and find any where else we stayed. On your website it states the table is booked for 2 hours. Well, we had all our courses within 1 hour as we felt we were just on a conveyor belt having everything brought out as quickly as possible. I understand it's one of the busiest nights of the year, but we did not feel welcomed. The food itself was okay, like I mentioned previously I had my heart set on other menu options. After last night's experience I'm really not sure if I will be coming back to try them.

Terrific food and wonderful service. Lovely atmosphere and great views. Would definitely recommend this place for a romantic meal. It’s not overly cheap but great for a special occasion. We asked our waitress to give us time between courses and she was totally accommodating, love that!

Restaurant looks 'high-end' but once you enter through the front doors and are taken into the restaurant you soon realise things are not what they appear. It started out with no offer of water (we had to ask), no appetisers E.g. bread served. Entree of oysters were nice, Beef Tartare also not bad, the Barramundi Croquettes were dry, definitely frozen then deep fried, I think they had been in the freezer a long time (menu states croquettes but it's actually only one, no offer by waiter to add an extra despite us saying we were sharing entrees). We hoped the steak would win us over but like everything else it too was a disappointment (labelled as on the bone), didn't come on the bone at all, cooked ok but not worth what we paid, and the plates! well what can I say, scratched metal trays (similar to that of a pizza tray), not appealing, oh and the serviettes looked like dish cloths. Only once did a waiter offer to top up our wine glasses (thank you, this waiter seemed to be the only person who was customer focused), lucky the bottle was left on the table. If we wanted a 'Pub' experience we would've gone to a pub. Disappointed and certainly wouldn't go back again.

Very pricey for a steak, 100 day aged, $90 that was bland and flavourless. Staff not very helpful, Coffee was cold. Loud when you sit next to the kitchen and hear all the dishes crashing together. And the smell of bleach just adds to the atmosphere... maybe just stay home and cook your own steak.

Attentive service. Beautifully cooked delicious food. Extensive steak menu for the carnivores. A fish or pasta alternative if not. Salads were a good size and tasty. A large dining room that seats 70-80 people accessed through a wine shop, off a back lane. We were lucky to get a table without booking on a Sunday night. Recommend booking.

Our group of 5 had an outstanding meal here, where we all ordered steaks & ribs. The food was outstanding. Service was patchy, & where we were seated got a little “smoky” being near the open kitchen. Nevertheless, if steak is your thing, I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Fantastic experience from start to end. Came here for my 40th birthday dinner, initially reserved a table for 14 people and had no issues. A week later called to see if I could include 1 more and they were happy to accommodate. Love that no deposit was needed despite my big booking, much appreciated. Had the 1.5kg tomahawk steak and it was heaven. The fatty pieces melt in your mouth. Was soft & tender, cooked to perfection. The only criticism I would have was the sauces were in tiny portions; should be a little more generous for us diners feasting this big steak. Would definitely come back for the steak. Arguably the best steaks in Melbourne. And thank you for a memorable night!

Expected far more from a steak joint with such a fine list of meats. As usual, I judge a place on the sauces and the Bearnaise, Mushroom and Pepper were all lifeless packet jobs for steaks that cost up to $120. I tried them all and not one was worthwhile. The dry aged eye fillet was good, but not great. Wholly disappointing and warranted one star but for the diligent waitress, Stephanie, who tried everything to sort that mess out.

If your looking for a great place to have steak come down to Hereford Beefstouw, The quality of steak they serve here is the best grade I've seen in and around the Melbourne area. The servers are polite and friendly and make the experience very enjoyable, the wine selection on offer is also amazing. I would highly recommend this restaurant when trying to find a place to dine in Melbourne.

Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
