I went with another 2 friends on a visit to Melbourne on Friday night. The restaurant is quite small and we didn't have a booking but they found us a table. We had 3 dishes to share. The meals were very tasty and the meat was tender. My favourite was the Mongolian Beef. Service was very quick and friendly. It... More

Typical little Chinatown restaurant, and by typical I mean great! Teriffic value, lightning fast service, large portions of tasty Chinese food. This place often busy, and you can see why. I recommend this place, amongst other great joints in Melbournes Chinatown.

Absolutely the trashiest restaurant in Melbourne. I went to Ling Nan with a friend and ordered 2 dishes with rice which came to about $35, and the waiter rudely said that the minimum cost is $40 to eat here! the two dishes we orders are both quite large so I said to the waiter if we order more it will... The food here is worse than you would get at an RSL chinese restaurant in rural australia. We couldn,t get into Longrain so walked down chinatown and tried this. Should have starved, terrible gluggy shiney fake coloured rubbish. Don,t risk it.

At busy hours, anticipate waiting for a while and be expectant of overwhelmed staff. Their steamed Barramundi fish, Crispy Toufu with Prawn & Shitake mushrooms were great. Their Steamed Oysters with XO Sauce were awesome too. We were, however, disapointed with their bowl of Shark's Fin Soup as it merely starchy with little ingredients. Their salted Steamed Chicken 盐焗鸡 wasn't... More

We only had one dish, but it was not good. It is hard to get a Chinese stir fry wrong, but this was dreadful. Not cheap either. Service was reasonably pleasant.

Upon arriving at the restaurant we could see that it was very busy. Service was very quick and most of the time very unfriendly. The food was yum and plenty, however we were not even ask if we wanted desert, our bill was placed on the table as they started clearing/cleaning for the people who were standing behind us waiting... This place was recommended by our niece who lives in Melbourne. I'm so glad we came. No booking they accommodated 5 of us very quickly. We ordered the Salt and chilli pork ribs because we tried it at another restaurant here in Chinatown and enjoyed it- we also loved it here too. The fried tofu with prawn meat was really... More

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
