A classic French bistro with all the trimmings. If that's what you're looking for, Phillipe is it. Everything about this place screams "Paris" with one notable exception--the service is friendly, welcoming, efficient, and helpful. As with most French bistros, Phillipe shines at both lunch and dinner. The three course lunch menu of $65 including a 250ml carafe of either white or red wine (very good wine, by the way) is terrific value for food of this standard. I haven't eaten at dinner or ordered a la carte, but the menu is replete with French classics. The downstairs room is spacious and comfortable with well-spaced tables and an open kitchen. When you descend the stairs, you are confronted by the fridge proudly displaying the meat and poultry. This is not a vegetarian's paradise, although they are accommodated. I can't think of a better classic French bistro in Melbourne.

We enjoyed our meal, it was well executed. Staff were a bit disorganised but I understand, so hard to reorganise new teams etc after melbournes long covid lockdowns. Still, when there was one champagne and 2 local bubbles on the by the glass list I was still asked 'which one' when I asked for 4 glasses of Champagne. Hint: Champagne never ever comes from the Yarra or Loire valleys. Nice of them to still ask for a tip though. I'd like to know whats with the curiously Melbourne thing of trying to charge $8 per head for bubbly water out of a tap? I mean Philippe charge us $25 per glass for Champagne, $49 for a mains but give us no bottled water, instead wanting real money for fizzy tap water. Its not OK and certainly worth a lesser review. There are other french restaurants in Melbourne that serve real bottled water that I will go to before returning to Philippe.

Presentation, ambience, service and choice on the menu are all wonderful here. Best of all though the food was absolutely fabulous. The lamb rack was perfect, beef tartare exceptional and we even tried the snails. A friend we were with is vegan and it was no trouble the chef cooked a special meal for her also. Highly recommend.

Phillipe’s food is excellent and the service impeccable..... but the noise!! We had the misfortune to be seated in an area where two tables of bellicose males seemed determined to share their boasts and silly stories with us all. Loud guffaws, shouting over one another and voices in the decibel range made our enjoyment of our lunch impossible. When will places like this learn that they have a duty to ALL their clients to provide a reasonable environment.?

The food was excellent, compliments to the chef. At the beginning, so was the service. However, when more customers came in the waiting staff began ignoring me and my wife. The couple next to us got seen to three times while we continued to wait. Ended up being a half hour wait before we were seen to. The man mumbled “sorry about the minor wait” while our initial server kept ignoring us. I wasn’t expecting to be waited in hand and foot, but when I’m paying well over $200 I don’t expect to be ignored.

There is nothing positive that I can say about this restaurant. Not only was this the worst French restaurant I have ever been to, it was the worst meal I have eaten in a long time. The menu is uninspiring and I actually struggled to find anything that I wanted to eat. I would have walked out, but we were with friends who recommended this place. The food was overpriced and under delivered in every aspect. Most pubs these days can serve up better food than this. The veloute was luke warm and looked like dirty dish water and didn’t taste much better. My wife liked the pork pate, but I thought it was very ordinary and tasteless. It was not pate at all, but rather a bad terrine. This was not worth anywhere near the price of $30 The duck was also tasteless and the jus was watery and tasteless. I can cook better confit duck at home. I only ordered it because it was the only main course that was slightly appealing. The pomme frites were just greasy over cooked chips. These are not the French fries you expect at a French restaurant. There are very few decent wines available by the glass. We were also about to be charged for a desert that never arrived. Wait staff unfriendly and never made us feel welcome. When main courses are $60, I expect something special and the food here is the exact opposite of this. Do yourself a favour and spend your money somewhere else where your patronage is appreciated and food is inspiring, tasty and well cooked

Food - Extremely disappointed overall 1. The oysters were still attached to shell, presentation simple 2. The pate en coute , was actually a slice of a terrine with a stale soggy crust , lacked any duck flavour, was chunky and minimal presentation. 3. Thousand Guinea scotch fillet cut of meat had tough sinew making it extra chewy Presentation was extremely poor, lazy workmanship and did not excite the senses with lump of lettuce and raw thinly sliced onion rings. 4. Bearnaise showed signs that it had split during the making of it , then reconstituted to make usable. 5. Cauliflower au gratin was watery, possible due to lack of straining required. 6. Pomme frites, heavily over salted, salt granule size excessive. On a positive note: Waitering service 1. Very professional with delivery of wine and food 2.Cleared plates quickly 3. Ensured water glass was not empty 4, Completed billing easily In summary, based on food items order, Phillipe's restaurant fill short of expectation and not at the quality / flair expected of a french restaurant.

This restaurant is tucked away in a Collins Street laneway, basement style and opens into a beautiful dining space offering table sizes for everyone, large groups or small. It’s worth a look just to see the splendidly ornamental bar area but also to observe a team of professional waiting staff in action. They all look immaculate, are very welcoming and have excellent wine and food knowledge. The host, Chez Philippe Mouchel is a very friendly man who always has a kind greeting and oversees every dish before it gets the okay for table delivery. This is his fastidious touch that ensures high standards are maintained for diners. Rock oysters natural were as fresh as ever and so too was the succulent barramundi. It’s not often that a wine list offers such a wide range of quality French wines so be sure to indulge, some of the white wine choices are first rate. Visiting Melbourne without a booking at Philippe would leave a huge hole in any itinerary. 8.1/10

We had an amazing experience at Philippe on Collins Street. There is something speakeasy when u have to walk into a basement beneath a small fluorescent sign saying Philippe. The staff were exceptional from the moment we entered. Tim ( the maitre’d self proclaimed Grandfather😂) helmed the floor superbly. So so good to see Chef Philippe Mouchel at the pass, checking every dish. We had the Caviar Oscetra, blinis came out warm and the superb staff made sure we had an extra serving of blinis for the exquisite caviar. Canard a la presse. Wow. Get this ancient dish that necessitated Grandfather Tim and Chef Exceptional Philippe to prepare at your table. What a perfect dish. Nasturtium petals were a perfect foil to this rich rich dish. The food was exceptional, with a diverse menu that catered to various tastes. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was artful. The service was top-notch, with attentive staff who made us feel welcome throughout our meal. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, creating the perfect setting for a memorable dining experience. Only 1 star? Food critics….. u know Philippe deserves 2.5

A classic venue ticking all the boxes for a refined night of classic dishes, served in classic good style, and a venue classic in relaxed, classy and not-loud environment. Other customers on the night matched the venue! Being downstairs in the basement also takes one away more to another world while there. Food excellent, wines good, and will definitely return when seeking a first-class dinner with the full experience.

We booked here for our 30th wedding anniversary at the end of June as a special treat and had a wonderful experience. The food was lovely despite the limited menu and every dish beautifully presented. The place was full albeit in keeping with the social distancing rules and staff were attentive and knowledgeable. Cant wait to try it again when the world returns to normal...

Don’t miss this restaurant if you are in Melbourne. Great food. Great staff and service. Pay a little extra for the experience it’s worth it. We have dined at Paul Bocuse a Philippe restaurant since the 1990’s always great.

I called 24 May 12:30pm to make an enquiry and asked if they do walk ins and their response was: we are always fully booked. If you don't book you'll not get a table and will be turned away. Okay fine! So I made a phone booking as the manager gave me a long lecture about now the only way to cancel now is through phone. So my response, "So I won't be given a URL to cancel if there's an emergency or something." The answer: NO!! Half of the time they won't even pick up the phone. So I canceled my booking and said I'll do it online. He then proceeded to gave me a long lecture about the negatives of doing it online. I ask him to clarify upon which he interrupted my question before I even finished and lectured me AGAIN assuming that he knew what I was going to ask. Very condescending tone and when he finally stopped 2 minutes later: Alright sir, we look forward to seeing you there'll be plenty of space if you want to book online blah blah. No, you won't be seeing me ever and I'll make sure this review goes everywhere on the internet.

We have been visiting Philippe over the last eight years and it is always a treat to have dinner or drinks and snacks at the bar in this authentic French establishment. The restaurant is very cozy and the food and its presentation is impeccable. It is always lovely to see the same senior team members when we visit. The open plan kitchen and oyster bar offers an opportunity for the guests to enjoy watching the preparation of the beautiful dishes. They have a lovely selection of wines and drinks and offer oysters and champagne at the bar. You can visit for a drink and snacks at the bar after a busy day in CBD. Philippe always exceeds our expectations.

It’s so great to see Philippe and his team back, Melbourne isn’t the same without him. We had a group of us and I’m sure we ate the entire menu. Some highlights, well everything beef tartare à la Parisienne and Burgundy snails as entrée, followed by of course the rôtisserie chicken and Entrecôte “scotch fillet”. Service Great, food outstanding, I’m happy

Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
