This restaurant is in a lovely old building - it's a pleasure to dine there. Add to that the excellent service and food and it's a real winner.

We had the wallaby which is why we went here because most places no longer serve the fillet cooked. Loved it and the service was excellent.

Located at the Astor Private Hotel, a 1920s Art Deco building, on Macquarie Street. The restaurant isn't large however, what it lacks in space makes up in the atmosphere. The decor captures the elegance / opulence of a New York steakhouse, with its dark wood...panelling, upholstered chairs, linen napkins & tablecloths, fine china and quality glassware. The dining room is beautiful, luxurious and above all quiet and peaceful, we were able to easily have a quiet intimate conversation without straining to hear each other. The wine list is both extensive and very well priced, featuring local Tasmanian reds, whites, and sparkling. The menu features local produce ranging from beef, pork, seafood, and vegetables. We ended up ordering the grass-fed eye fillet steak tartare ($25) and the soft organic pork belly ($25) for starters, both of which were delicious - a delight to the eyes and sumptuous to devour. For mains I went with the cape grim marinated hanger steak ($47) and my wife the grass-fed porterhouse ($46.50) which came with olive oil dressed steamed greens, and to my delight a selection of locally made mustards. The meat was cooked perfectly, tender with a nice pink blush. I must admit I was tempted to go the wallaby fillets, but you have to go with the house specialities when you are at a steakhouse. Even though we felt well-fed we still opted to share a burnt Basque cheesecake ($16.50) for dessert. The service was refined, professional and polished - they really make you feel special from the moment you walk in the door.   We thoroughly enjoyed our relaxed intimate dining experience and feel it would appeal to anyone wanting a special night out in Hobart.More

Arrived in Hobart today at the start of our holiday to Australia and wanted a nice quality meal after our long flights from the UK. Emailed from the website in the afternoon to request a booking that evening and received a confirmation within 5 mins!!...The meal was perfect! Great service from the moment we arrived. We had the loaf with Aioli and 2 porterhouse steaks and sides which were cooked perfectly. Highly recommend this restaurant.More

Lovely atmosphere and cosy decor; waitstaff were attentive and quick to refill drinks etc. Our meals were served relatively soon after ordering and were good quality and well presented. I had the roast duck with cherry sauce and it was absolutely amazing! Cocktail menu was...unique and the bartender was happy to make some classic cocktails not included on the set menu. A lovely experience - would definitely recommend to couples looking for a cosy dinner or a group of friends wanting a decadent evening.More

The main dining room at the Astor Grill was full save for two seats that we happened to be fortunate enough to be given near the bar. It turned out to be a good table, but booking for a meal at this stylish restaurant is...strongly recommended. We were quickly seated, given menus, beverage list and water. The staff were right on cue from the moment we arrived and throughout the meal. The menu focused strongly on local produce and the wine list was extensive, featuring a lot of Tasmania's best wines. We chose wallaby and duck and a local Pinot Noir; all were excellent. The wines were on the pricey side; a trend we found with most of the small winery produced local wines. It was an excellent dining experience in a pleasant environment, serviced by efficient staff and overall the prices were reasonable considering the overall high quality of the offering.More

We hat one starter and one main each: quail and crab paté as starters, steak and wallaby as mains. Everything was really goid, along with Tasmanian wine. Not a cheap place of course, but recommended if you are looking for something special. Book ahead.

This dining experience did not start well. We were ushered out of the main dining area and into another area which was locked and the staff had to find a key to let us enter. We were then placed unceremoniously in a dark corner not...only behind a wall but also a screen which was later removed. My husbands steak was really good. He enjoyed it very much. My duck choice was dry and not up to the mark at all. Throughout our meal I felt I had been placed in the naughty corner as there were other tables in the main area not occupied. I wouldnot go there again,More

We dined at the Astor Grill and our experience was perfection. From the moment we entered the restaurant we were warmly greeted and had our coats taken and hung up. We were then escorted to our window table. The atmosphere of the venue was really...lovely with a fine dining ambience, matched by wonderful customer service. On a cool evening, the restaurant was warm, with tasteful decorating and a classic fine dining charm that was warm and inviting. Our lovely host Lily looked after us for the evening and was friendly, provided detailed information of the menu options, struck the perfect balance with being attentive while not intrusive, and staggered the timing of the dishes coming out so that we dined at a comfortable pace. Her recommendations were all on point and we were very satisfied with the food that was presented. We started with a couple of Devil Shooters to whet the palate. The Pacific oysters were plump and flavoursome and the shooter had a hint of spiciness which went down a treat. For mains, my wife ordered the 300g Black Angus Scotch Fillet while I had the 200g Wagyu Eye fillet. Both steaks were cooked perfectly and were melt in your mouth tender. The selection of mustards on offer also added a nice touch to the meat. We accompanied the steaks with a selection of sides such as the Tasmanian truffle-infused Paris Mash, pan fried confit garlic mushrooms, steamed greens and oven baked cauliflower with harissa tahini. All sides were wonderful but the particular standout were the mushrooms that were the best I have ever had and I have eaten at a lot of restaurants in my time. For dessert, we thoroughly enjoyed belgium chocolate moelleux and the crema Catalina with burnt orange creme. Both desserts were decadant, rich and the perfect finish to the evening. As an added bonus, the restaurant was aware that we were celebrating my birthday and brought out some petit for with a candle which literally was the icing on the cake for our evening. Thank you once again to Lily and the wonderful staff at the Astor Grill for a truly memorable evening. This was easily the best dining experience we had in our time in Tasmania and highly recommended.More

Service was great, ambience was lovely and cosy. Food which is surely the main feature of dining at a restaurant like this was ok. Nothing wrong with our meals but just a little bland and pedestrian nothing that was spectacular. Looking around this seems to...be a favourite of a certain older generation. For the prices they charge and how they position themselves in the market I would have expected food that truly had a wow factor. Wouldn’t come back and if you are looking for a lovely night out for fine dining in Hobart there are many better options.More

This is my favourite restaurant in Hobart. I love everything from the classic decoration, to the immaculate waiter service, wonderful food, great drinks list and great ambience. We went with friends who were also impressed. From Crayfish Pate and Stuffed Quail which was amazing, followed...by Superbly cooked steaks and veg, some lovely roasted potatoes to share. Finished with Cheese Platter and a delicious Chocolate Tart. Menu is extremely interesting and diverse.More

The Astor Grill's web site says that they are closed on Sundays and public holidays, so I expect that means they will be closed on Christmas Day.
