There’s a decent amount of competition among Indian restaurants in Hobart, and I suspect the Bathurst St location, off the main drags and with no view to speak of, does Maharaja a disservice. But within the unappealing exterior it offers an extensive choice of southern and northern dishes across all courses, in an intimate upstairs setting. It’s often difficult for some of us to appreciate the subtle differences in Indian cuisine, so I’ll give a shout-out to the Maharaja for its Chicken Himayu, cooked with onion, capsicum, crushed black pepper and “chef’s special spices”. This was precisely what I hoped for – every ingredient played its part, and the spices made this dish just that little bit greater than the sum of its parts. And I couldn’t argue with change from $17 for an authentic main coursed cooked exactly to my medium-hot preference.

Very good attentive service. Six of us chose different meals from a well presented menu. The range of curries allowed each of us to choose the the type and the degree of heat we each preferred. And with our main meals we each chose a fair number of extras. Some of us needed a few explanations about our choices and also need to discuss our various dietary requirements. Our waitress was very friendly, informative and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble.
We also found that lunch is available and take-aways every day. I made a note in my diary.

Maharaja is my favourite date spot for dinner in Tas. I’ve been goin on dates here for 10 years. I love the decor and music. I enjoy drawing on the paper table cloths. There is food for the meat eaters and the vegans. The food is delicious and affordable. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The chutney and naan are tasty. I always order all of the sides. They let you take your dinner home if you can’t eat it all. I love maharaja very much. It’s a sensational place. Sincerely Georgia Lucy

Very Very Poor Service as we placed an order and was served 1 hour post order.
Then when served was given spoilt (totally off meat) which almost made me vomit and feel sick. Order was returned.
Upon bill paying, was getting charged for the spoilt food as well which has initiated this review as basic courtesy should atleast tell the servers/owners to take off what has a. Not been consumed and b. A major error made by the chef and/or kitchen
A lot of people kept waiting for orders and ended up leaving with disappointment.
It was our last day in Hobart which has now left us with a really bad taste.
A lot of better (and cheaper) options available around (and u may as well sleep hungry than having crap)

We are long term patrons of this restaurant - it was once our ‘go to’ for curries and authentic Indian cuisine. We could no longer forgive the uncomfortable chairs and long wait times plus lack lustre service. Having resorted to take away only, we have finally given up completely. Our latest meals contained more fat and gristle than meat and the flavour was simply lacking. The wait staff are more interested in their phones than their customers. What a sad end. Where will I find a great Kashmiri Naan now??

Went with friends, waited for 1 hours 15 minutes and then a guy came and asked would you like the food spicey or mild. Which meant the food was not prepared and they had just started looking at our order.
For the owner if you are busy with Uber or Menulog please open up a Ghost Kitchen and do take aways there only.
why are you ruining your reataurants image with Dine-in customer they donot deserved to wait over 1 and half hour if you guys want to do jyst delivery business.
Cant rate you for the food as i had to leave.

I have eaten Indian cuisine all over the world, and had many wonderful meals. Had not gone to this place before but on the strength of the strong reviews, decided to try it with family. What a letdown! We ordered three totally different curries between us, lamb, chicken and prawn, looking forward to the diversity of flavours. Or so we hoped! In the event, all three looked and tasted almost identical. It seemed the cook had a pre-prepared sauce of pretty undistinguished quality and flavour, and simply added in the different meats, without variation. No way should a Chicken Tikka Masala taste exactly like a prawn curry, and both indistinguishable from a Lamb Rogan Josh! Servings were large but the named main ingredients were sparse, except for the chicken. As for the "authentic", the most prominent hero of each dish was carrot, NOT an authentic Indian ingredient! Certainly our first and last visit.

Appalling service, on a level I've never experienced anywhere before. Will NEVER go to this restaurant again. The service has always been hit and miss but now it's reached a new and dismal low.
We arrived at 7ish one night. As always the carpet on the stairs was filthy. This time I noticed the bannister was greasy and sticky too. Not a good sign. We were seated and given menus but then ignored. The place was practically empty. The one lot of customers there before us had already been served, and the single takeaway customer who arrived was readily provided with the meal she'd ordered sometime before.
Despite our trying to make eye contact with the woman at the counter, who seemed to be the only staff member on the floor, she never once looked up from what she was doing. She seemed to be writing or texting and had her eyes in her lap. She also completely evaded our gaze the one or two times she moved through the restaurant. Whatever she was doing, it was clearly a lot more engrossing than trying to maintain the business. When we gave up after about 20 minutes and started to leave, saying: "We're going, thank you", she looked up briefly, said nothing and then returned to whatever she was doing without saying a word. Evidently whether we were happy or not with the service (or total lack thereof) was of no interest to her.

I ordered take out. I am vegetarian, so I cant speak for the meat but the paneer was divine and melted in my mouth. Really delicious. The best part for me was the whole meal was not greasy or fatty at all (like other Indian take away can be). The sauce was creamy and tasted really fresh. The roti was soft and fluffy and wholesome. I was really impressed with the meal and it far exceeded my expectations. Would thoroughly recommend.

Don't be put off by the unprepossessing street facade. This is all about food not finery. Extensive menu, inexpensive prices and food that left the taste buds in a state of bliss. We will be back!

Love this restaurant, THe food was stuñning,beautiful presented and wonderfully spiced.our waiter was knowledgeable about all the dishes and attentive.gobhi muslam and koftasamsavera was particularly tasty,portion sizes are very big so waiteres gave me box to take home the rest as I could not finish it all but it was so delicious.highly recommend.

We frequently go here for takeaway with great tasting food but i have to admit the dine-in experience was lack lustre at best. No papadums on arrival despite other tables receiving them (free with takeaway), no mint yoghurt with entrees (as provided with takeaways), no choice whatsoever on banquet, charge on chilli powder(!), and not providing account when asked. Should have got takeaway and done the washing up!!!
