Three and a half out of 5. We wanted to like it here and were happy to be eating out again and supporting the industry which has suffered from the covid shutdown. Menu looked good, lots of old favourites. Prices are up there but if the food is good, one doesn’t mind. Unfortunately it wasn’t great, just ok. The front room had a nice ambiance however the back room near the kitchen hatch wasn’t so great. ‘Junk’ ; take away containers/packaging and spare furniture stacked upside down beside the kitchen servery in the middle of this dining area looked really tacky. Like a cheap takeaway. shop. The Toilet needs a proper wall to close the entrance off, not just a screen, several times there were toilet smells. The room was cold. One chef (looked like perhaps the head chef, Indian fellow) was pretty abrupt with the wait staff if they were just 20 seconds late picking up an order which wasn’t pleasant to watch over. Wait staff were ok/prompt and orders were correct and served quickly but they seemed to lack confidence or perhaps experience and there was no obvious sign of a manager or maitre’d keeping an eye on service and building rapport with customers. Food was hit and miss. Steak and pork were good. Desserts ok but average for price and what the restaurant is trying to be. Lamb and vegetables were very average and felt a bit like ‘pub’ food but at restaurant prices. Overall it needs some improvement in service, atmosphere and in some areas, the food. I hope management takes this onboard as this restaurant has potential.

Had booked a table and later rang to say we were going to be late, staff were very accommodating and said "no problem." Ordered entree and main, couldn't finish eating our main as the entree was quite a good portion size, took the rest away in an environmentally friendly container. Used my entertainment voucher to receive a discount, prices for some mains were expensive too.

To be fair, we originally selected the restaurant based on its proximity to a nearby brewery, it didnt disappoint. We had oysters for entree, and being newbys to Tas, chose the bloody mary shot which in retrospective doesnt allow the magnificent oyster to shine through. If you feel like tomato juice, I recommend ordering a whole bloody mary, and keep the oysters simple. The steaks were cooked perfectly and our waiter was able to dissuade one of our group from ordering theirs too rare, which we appreciated. Would recommend wholeheartedly

I came here in January 2018 and it was excellent. My partner had also been back later in 2018, also excellent. However in 2020, it seems they have hit some challenges, and it is nowhere near as good. We ordered a Cape Grim rib eye, market fish and a burger. We also ordered oysters to start, but they only had four oysters left, of which 2 were bad, they happily took them back to the kitchen and they didn’t appear on our bill. This used to be a place where you could get a great steak, but tonight’s effort was overdone from medium rare, it was more like medium and under seasoned. The blue cheese sauce was also under seasoned. The fish was rubbery and tough, it had had the bejesus cooked out of it. The burger was pretty good, however the chef was not at all accommodating, when requested to swap the included sweet potato fries for regular fries, the answer was a firm no, which I can understand if the restaurant is extremely busy, but tonight, it was about half full. Pretty slack as this is not a major change The waitstaff were very friendly and pretty competent, they were also extremely apologetic throughout our dining experience, it’s as if they know the rot has set in and a once great and reasonably priced place for excellent Tasmanian fare has entered the so called “death spiral” Another frustration was that the online menu does not match the menu in the restaurant. If you are going to maintain an online menu, then it needs to match the menu in the establishment We were overcharged for wine, but it was cheerfully removed from our bill I would no longer recommend this place. Your money is better spent elsewhere

This was a great delight to find this restaurant, I’m always worried when I have to pick somewhere I don’t know. This restaurant was easy to find, lovely and simple. The waiters were attentive, the menu had a great selection. We had the steak which was delicious, my father in law had prawn and beef skewers. We ordered Josef Chromy Chardonnay which was delicious. Very pleasant night.

Very disappointed, will not be back. My meal market fish $38 was served with a veggie Patti that was definitely straight from the freezer bag! Veggie medley and small pieces of red skin potato completely raw. Husband's meal - the smallest 3 lamb cutlets I have ever seen $42 was served with same medley of veg including raw potato, also had a mash with 3 massive lumps!! Definitely so many better restaurants for that sort of price! Kids meal - nuggets and chips, $15 nuggets straight from the freezer bag and a few chips.

Elizabeth street N Hobart is packed with restaurants so deciding where to eat was difficult. The four of us decided a darn good steak was what we were looking for so decided "lets splurge on the supposedly best steak house in Hobart" . I had been promising myself a Wagyu steak for ages so went for it at a cost of $62. Our booking was for 6.45pm...the place was busy so we were seated upstairs. Wait staff were attentive but meal service a bit slow with ours arriving at 8pm. All steaks come with mash...vegies or house slaw. We ordered a side of chips between us, they were ok. The garlic bread likewise. And then comes the main, expectations so high, $62 its got to be impressive! Steak was cooked as ordered , medium , but nothing to write home about. Mash ok, veg pretty crunchy and pepper sauce nothing to rave about. Had i been dining at a pub and paying around $30 i probably would not be commenting. Paying top dollar, I expected an amazingly good meal! This was the most underwhelming meal . My other half ordered a 200gm eye fillet, once again cooked as ordered but a huge bowl of coleslaw and just ok mash was not anything to write home about. For a top priced restaurant this WAS NOT A GOOD EXPERIENCE. .

Scotch fillet cooked to medium ordered. The meal was served very quickly but the reality was the steak was cooked as well done and was dry and tasteless. Maybe the speed of service was due to the steak already being cooked and resting for too long causing it to dry out and being over cooked. Either way, it was not a quality meal by any stretch. Have been there in the past and have been served succulent, well cooked steaks so very disappointed with this experience. The salad rocket was bitter and the potato purée a minuscule amount. Even the accompanying sauce was watery and tasteless. Unlikely to go back as not worth the prices currently.

Went here for a birthday dinner with my family. I asked for a medium rare steak, when I received it, it was cooked medium well at least as there was no red in the steak when cut into. I informed the staff politely that I asked for medium rare and this was medium well. The waitress took the steak and apologised, 5 minutes later I had the manager come to our table and explain to us in a rather rude way that we were wrong and it was in-fact cooked to medium rare. I didn’t want to argue so I apologised. I have worked in restaurants for 6 years and my sister who was at the dinner is a chef, we both agreed that the steak was definitely not medium rare and at least medium well. The real kicker was the second steak I received was rare bordering onto blue. I felt bad as I’ve worked in restaurants for so long and didn’t complain and ate it. This occasion was the second time I’ve been to the roaring grill and was the last time based on the fact that the manager was so rude and incompetent.

We've just arrived in Hobart as part of a 10 day holiday...what a way to start!! This restaurant has to be on everyone's list!! Easily booked online, lovely ambience and not noisy. The drinks menu is quite extensive and reasonably priced. We ordered a beef and prawn skewer with rice and a sweet chilli cream sauce ( it was HUGE), fresh steamed veg, a perfectly cooked Tasmanian scotch fillet and lovely garlic& herb bread. The staff were very friendly and made sure you enjoyed your meal. We had a great night...thanks guys!!

Friday night and we wanted steak. After checking some reviews here and there we chose the Roaring Grill. We weren't disappointed. Everything including the positive approach of our server was excellent. We began with the mushroom entre. For the main I had the 500 gram Ribeye RARE and my wife had the 200 Gram filet, the same way. Both were excellently prepared. That said, mine was extraordinary. A bottle of Cunnawara blend of Shiraz and Cabernet along with the date pudding and an espresso rounded out the evening. Reasonably priced, clean with soft light jazz style music in the backround, we could not have asked for better. Wonderful evening and we will be back.

Called in for dinner with a group and the staff were great initially. We all had steak and they were amazing but let down by the salad and gravy. The salad was bitter leaves with a touch of tomato. I was really looking forward the the slaw that they used to have as a standard dish with a steak. The gravy, I had mushroom sauce was so thin, it was more a Jus than any gravy or sauce. Little taste and did not add to the experience. While the staff was great, especially the make senior staff, they were missing. Could have had extra drink (and more profit) Good experience, but let down by a couple of things.

From the minute we walked through the door the staff were attentive, friendly & helpful. Once we were seated & menus given, water was served while we decided on drinks & food. Well, the food was a 10/10, steaks cooked to absolute perfection, mash was smooth & creamy & fresh seasonal veggies finished off the dinner. They offer a great range of drinks - both alcoholic & non alcoholic. The staff went over & above, regularly checking to ensure everything was to our satisfaction. Highly recommend this place for a couples or family dinner. We will definitely return in our next visit to Tassie. Absolute perfection!!
