Our party of four had dinner at Rockwell in what could be best described as an average experience. The restaurant was obviously well patronised to the extent that it was difficult to see what if any COVID-19 measures were in place. The table service verged on "insistent" and it was obvious that it was more of a production line experience than anything else. Quality of the food was good but not really reflective of the high prices being asked. Overall, the dinner was let down by the excessive noise, pressure from the service staff and an expensive night for what was provided. Recommended so long as you know what you are in for and have also looked elsewhere.

The dining options on Salamanca Place are quite considerable, and it’s understandable that such an attractive and historic area will draw in the crowds. Salamanca Place is the picturesque docks area of Hobart, lined with a long row of simple Georgian sandstone warehouses built in the 1830s. These mellow stone buildings, which once stored the likes of grain, wool, whale oil, and apples have been converted into a plaza of restaurants and shop, with pubs, artists, galleries, craft shops and nightlife adding to the relaxed atmosphere of the place after sundown. The restaurants were certainly busy on the warm summer evening we were there.
We had had a number of personal recommendations to dine at the Rockwall Bar and Grill, and were fortunate to secure a table following a short wait for previous diners to finish their meal. We were served drinks, and given menus to peruse before being seated. The interior design of the restaurant nicely blends the rustic with the modern, providing a contemporary yet nicely casual atmosphere in which to enjoy a meal.
The modern yet concise menu appeared to make great use of the local produce and seafood for which Tasmania is famous. We chose, for starters, the Tempura Australian Prawns, and the Roasted Pumpkin and Ricotta Ravioli. Both were ample, and outstanding. The tempura coating on the prawns was crispy and light; the accompanying dipping sauce was Thai in flavour, with hints of garlic, lime and chilli. The ravioli was exceptional. Our mains were the Steak and Guinness Pie with a side of fat chips; we’d heard the steaks were good here but as we’d already booked another steakhouse on another night, we opted for different meals. The pies were lovely, brimming with chunks of flavoursome beef. However, the pea mash, whilst tasty, was a bit sparse - the dish could have done with a more generous serve of that mash.
The wine list features many Tasmanian gems; we accompanied our meal with a local cherry cider and a James Boag Premium lager. They were good choices.
The restaurant was extremely busy, but service was reasonable. It wasn’t particularly gregarious, just polite and slightly perfunctory. We weren’t hurried to eat quickly and to move on to allow more diners in, and the bill was correct. At around $105.00, we didn’t think that was unreasonable for the substantial and overall excellent meal we enjoyed.
We really enjoyed our evening meal and fully recommend this restaurant. Reservations are advisable; we appreciated that we could be accommodated without one; other guests were not so lucky.

I’ve been coming to this restaurant for the past seven years and every single time it is perfect. The chef has been there for a long time and is consistent the owners make you feel extremely welcome like a home away from home. Every time I touch down at Hobart airport all I can think about is getting a Rockwall meal into my stomach. Seriously one of the best steaks that you’ll ever have in your life along with great service leaves you wanting more.
You would be absolutely crazy to go anywhere else as this restaurant truly offers everything that you need!!!!!
Thanks again for a great night and for fitting me in straightaway you guys are the best!!!!

After waiting more than an hour and a half, my favourite coffee rubbed steak cooked medium rare came out so over cooked that the coffee rub was nothing but a burned flavourless coating. The medium rare was more well done than anything resembling medium rare. My daughter tasted mine and commented that the one I do at home is better, and I can feed my family of four for less than the $62 price of my solo meal. Unfortunately, this was a repeat of the meal we had there recently for my birthday, which I was hoping was a once off mistake. Sorry Rockwall, you just lost a loyal patron forever.

I am not the sort of person to complain. So this is a first. After a busy day down at Bruney my large family checked in and went down to Salamanca. We were squeezed in up the back near the at 7pm. A small room with a window to a rock. Two other tables of twenty were jammed in so the noise was horrific. It took over an hour to be served our meals so we were at 9pm with 6 kids from 20months to 16 years who were visibly exhausted. I had to ask for bread at 35mins as I had already injected my 9 year old type 1 diabetic expecting meals would be out in day 30 mins. Even that took 10 minutes to arrive. The food nothing to write home about. Portion size is fine, risotto average, crispy chicken better, “The burger” you could get better at a takeaway and pay 1/3 the price - really at $30+ a bit rich. Prawn entree four prawns at $18. Do yourself a favour perhaps take the ball and chain next door, they seemed a lot nicer and we should have went with our gut instincts and left after ten minutes of 100 decibels in this pig pen

Visiting friends and chose Rock Wall for our end of holiday visit. Friendly greeting on arrival and then was told by another staff member they had no tables available until we pointed out we had a booking. Table was tightly packed with little room. Order taken and first drinks served. Meals arrived but had to ask for fifth meal as it was not served with others and when it did arrive wasn’t complete which we had to point out. Meals were beautiful but steaks only warm, coffee rub steak did not taste of coffee in any way although perfectly cooked. Wait staff did not point out that sides were recommended with steak as meal was small for a main meal for men at the table. Service was poor, I was surprised when table was cleared while 2 people were clearly still eating. Definitely got the feeling that they wanted us to eat and run so they could up covers. I have worked in the restaurant/hospitality industry for many years and although the food was beautiful the service let you down big time. Will return let’s hope service is better on our next visit.

This place is noisy, social distancing is non existent despite the signage near the front door and a note on the menu. In fact it seemed as if they had attempted to get as many people into the space as possible.
We were on a table of 10 and if someone wanted to visit the bathroom, several of us had to stand up to let them pass.
The waiters could only approach the table from one side and so the plates had to be passed between dinners.
The drink waitress approach the table with our drinks and named them out loud and asked who they belonged to.
The food was ok but overpriced for what it was and my plate was chipped.
Definitely not a fine dining establishment.

Menu items had ran out, the noise level was ridiculous (couldn't hear yourself think ~ beyond reasonable). Really surprised by numbers crammed in with the covid environment. Served something different from ordered, and oily prawns and feedback handled extremely ungracefully by a very arrogant manager (Dean) with very poor customer service skills. Am actually quite stunned by the experience. Will not go back!

Honestly, ordinary. We were wanting to maximise local support in a post COVID environment and looked at reviews for our options for a family get-together. Food menu is promising but really is standard pub fare so easily comparable. Can't fault the food but when you wait one hour to be served and you arrive when there is only one other table seated you wonder why everyone else is having less trouble (we were only 4). Not really any personal service, or interest in us, for drinks or additions. There is an excellent wait person called Sarah who saved it for us even though she clearly was not responsible for our table, but we can only assume has customer service experience. It was ok, not awful, but no better than your average pub meal for a less than comparable price.
I think Hobart needs to lift it's game and hopefully Rockwall will read this and step it up for our hospitality industry. I think Hobart can try a bit harder. By the way we have been to the St Albi's sister restaurant many times and would rate this venue much higher across the board. Weird that it doesn't apply to our experience at Rockwall Salamanca.

We were looking forward to Dinner at Rockwall however we were very disappointed with the food and how our complaint was handled.
Clearly steaks are the restaurants speciality. One of our meals was a Scotch Fillet and it was OK. Our entree of Lobster pate was very tasty but it had been frozen and wasn’t thawed enough to serve.
My Friend ordered the Beef & Guinness pie with pea mash. It arrived covered in gravy, so much gravy that the pie was soggy! My friend does not have sauces at all! When we pointed out that on the menu it didn’t state that gravy was included we were told that it was because there was not enough room to put “with gravy” on the menu!!! Seriously!!! He was offered more mash instead of replacing the meal! The pea mash was just peas in potato mash and not palatable drowned in gravy.
My Duck with orange and pepper sauce. I wasn’t cooked well and the sauce lacked flavour of both orange and pepper!
When we asked for the bill the waitress was told by the Manager to offer us desserts for free. She should not have had to deal with the situation.
The Manager was on the floor but avoided our area.
We won’t be back for a long time if ever! Such a shame as we live in Battery Point and we’re looking forward to making it a regular on our list.

After having raved about the pate and kilpatrick oysters for all of the 10 days my daughter was here from Brisbane, she decided to treat us to dinner to say goodbye. What a terrible disappointment! Firstly they put our booking on the wrong night, they did find us a table but it took another 20 mins to get a drink and we had to ask about our entrees an hour later! We were told it was coming. About 30 mins later our main meals arrived. No pate or oysters, I asked what happened to our starters and was told it was a miscommunication, no sorry, no apology. The mains were outstanding as usual, but the fact we went there for the pate and oysters spoilt the whole experience. I will not recommend this restaurant again. The staff need training on how to handle their mistake. Everyone makes mistakes but to be told "never mind - who took your order - oh yes" is not something that a guest wants to hear or a satisfactory response. Too busy for service maybe?

Dined alone on a business trip and this place was close to accomodiation, and I had been there before.
The staff are friendly and helpful, however my fish was undercooked....and required sending back. I had eaten about a quarter of it, before discovering the middle was not cooked. The staff took it away, and then bizarrely asked if I wanted the same price back.....cooked. I declined.
The replacement was well cooked, however the situation already prevailed! Wont be back a third time.

We dined in tonight and the experience was fantastic. Service was great, our waitress was very attentive and friendly and ensured our drinks were regularly filled. Our food was beautiful. We ordered garlic parsley butter bread rolls, seafood chowder, the share platter which consisted of salt and pepper calamari, pork belly and tempura prawns, medium rare scotch fillet with mushroom sauce. The steak was well cooked rather than medium, but was still lovely. The platter salt and pepper calamari had a distinct taste to the crumb but can’t put my finger on what it was? Whilst the Salt and Pepper calamari is not for me, overall the food and service was fantastic and highly recommend.

We have made this our “go to” restaurant for years. The menu is awesome, the wines are mind blowing and the service is second to none. We love having the coffee rubbed steak...it’s divine. The attention to detail is great. Sometimes it can be a little noisy, but it is a well sort out restaurant! If you have a large group, book the mezzanine area out the back!

On a cold Hobart day, we were three”walk ins” for lunch last week and were pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome. It’s quite a spacious area downstairs so the way they have the tables set up it easily meets today’s distancing requirements.
We only opted for main courses but these were all spot-on, especially the Beef Pie and the Beef Rissoles. Hearty, comfort food for a cold winters day.
Very good wine list at reasonable prices rounded up our assessment of our first, but not last visit to Rockwall.
