I go to Seagrass quite often. After lockdown in 2020, I probably went there 5 times in 2 weeks. It is such a bright airy space with tables set far apart. For breakfast I usually order the corn cakes with smoked salmon and they are generous with the salmon. For lunch, their salt & pepper calamari is excellent. The position of the restaurant is sublime as it directly overlooks a sandy beach, there is a fabulous outdoor deck when warm, and there is plenty of parking. There is a stair lift going up to the restaurant but if this is crucial, call ahead to ensure it is operative. The staff are very pleasant and the coffee is good. It is not the least expensive around but taking into consideration the location, view and decor, it is fairly priced. I would rather pay a few extra dollars to dine here than some other places with dismal decor, mediocre menu and no atmosphere.

Great spot for some seaviews from long beach.
Positives: there's parking outside the restaurant, there's a park nearby and a playground, the food is decent and amazing views.
There's a balcony which you can sit out at and tables inside, and it's a seat yourself place.
Some things to note: No table service. You'll have to order at the counter. I noticed when there the tables were a little slow to be cleaned.
You can get tap water at the side and take it to your table. Menu has some variety, and you should be able to find something that you would enjoy eating.
Coffee was decent, the chai lattes were good if not a little sweet. Recommend trying the foccacia with bacon, egg and cheese and the corn cake dish.
The eggs and sourdough toast were well cooked, but there's a drizzle of oil and perhaps blitzed parsley around the plate which made the toast a little soft. They do breakfast which finishes at 11.30am and lunch which begins from 12pm.

I was somewhat amazed when ordering black tea ( Tasmania breakfast blend) to be told they were out of stock and had no alternative black tea as they were out of stock. If I was running a cafe a quick trip to an alternative provider would be on the cards. Chai was the only thing on offer.
Also the children’s breakfast crumpets are death traps. Basically Nutella, ice cream and a crumpet. Not suitable on a breakfast menu.
The setting was nice.

Expectations according to up market advertising and images were dashed.
A full restaurant on a Friday for lunch.
Drinks ordered when we arrived came 30 mins later, main a total disaster dry and overcooked lamb shank floating in a thin soupy gravy. Chickpeas!!! replaced the menus promise of roasted root vegetables.
Sweet although tasty arrived ages after a luke warm coffee as we were about to leave.
A rip off in the extreme.

Well, what a complete mess this was.. On arrival we could see Kaos and I just new this would be a mistake doing Fathers day lunch.
I understand the restaurant would cash in on a day like this and they certainly did, but to the expense of customers being very un happy with the meal & service. The owners who have a good reputation being in the game for many years should of thought about tge cash grabbing and looked at a reduced menu that would of been manageable. We finally got 3 mains, thays all we ordered( sensed it would take awhile)90 minutes after we ordered, the 6 scallop screwer dish was terrible, chips deep fried and way over cooked, basic fish n chips oil old, fish batter, like eating burnt flour. Chicken burger ineatable. We spoke to table attendant and the male offered a free beverage and would we like something else.
We declined the offer, paid the reduced bill and left.
We were so looking forward to having lunch with our son, sorry guys you ruined that time with family. I'd do hope when doing large days like this you consider a menu that works for front of house, definitely the kitchen and all staff.
And the staff definitely need to be on their game, more training - saying I'm new doesn't cut it.
Best of the luck for the future.

Well where can I start , I understand that Father’s Day is a busy day , however today was a complete shambles . It was quite obvious that the management decided to make a killing at the expense of their clients. The place was completely overbooked.
The only saving grace was the staff who did their best under the conditions.
Our food took over one hour and forty five minutes to arrive after ordering. When it did finally arrive two dishes were incomplete. My main was seafood chowder which resembled vegetable boarding house soup with four prawns , five scallops and a small section of white fish . Which had no flavour
There also seemed to be inconsistent meals delivered to other tables and ours , I wondered if they were running out of food . On a table of six no one was happy .you don’t go to dine out to sit drinking for one hour forty five minutes

Had a wonderful Saturday long lunch at Seagrass yesterday with my mother and fur child Penny.
We are both vegetarians and both had a fantastic salad. Mum had the potato and asparagus one and I had the cauliflower one - both were delicious! Servings are big, so we shared a dessert, which was the citrus tart and that was delicious as well. The service was excellent and so was the view. It all made for a delightful day. Have often had breakfast here, which is always good too and will definitely be back.

Received a warm welcome from Justin as soon as I arrived. Service was prompt, and Lizzie makes a fantastic coffee - a skill that has been lost at a lot of restaurants around Hobart and surrounds. Prices on the meals were quite steep, but that’s to be expected during the current climate. All in all, a very pleasant experience. Looking forward to returning soon.

I've always loved the location and outlook from this upstairs restaurant on the beach at Lower Sandy Bay and once again we were not disappointed. It has a welcoming ambience and comfortably warm setting. Staff were friendly and helpful and very prompt with service. The menu looked interesting but not particularly innovative or exciting. The wine list was limited but had a good choice of Tasmanian wines by the glass and reasonably priced.
The disappointment came with the food, at least the main courses. The seafood chowder, titled somewhat pretentiously Manhatten Smoked Clam and Seafood Chowder was not a traditional potato and cream-based chowder, but a spiced tomato variation. It was difficult to detect the mix of flavours but certainly there was a hint of curry, garlic, chilli which gave it something of a 'twang'. It wasn't bad but I've had much, much better. I would recommend a return to the traditional style. There was ample seafood in the chowder although none of it was particularly flavoursome and seemed to lack freshness. Toasted sourdough was hard and virtually inedible.
The fish and chips was a generous serving of I think boar fish with hand cut chips but was overcooked and also lacking freshness.
Desserts - a Baked Ricotta & Blueberry Cheesecake and Peanut Butter Parfait were flavoursome certainly but again lacked freshness, likely coming out of the freezer for the occasion.
This could be a fantastic restaurant if it lifted its game in terms of how food is handled and cooked. What we experienced was a tired operation trading on a likely dwindling reputation. A new, contemporary and adventurous menu delivering food cooked by a passionate and skilled chef would be a great move toward reclaiming this as the fine restaurant it has been in the past.

We were staying in Sandy Bay and we’re looking for a local restaurant, we were not disappointed. We had a table inside overlooking the bay and the view was fantastic.
My husband ordered the seafood chowder, this was more like bouillabaisse and to all it chowder was underselling it. It was full of seafood cooked perfectly in a great soup base. I ordered the King Prawn and seafood pasta in a light lemon sauce, seafood cooked perfectly and the sauce was subtle not taking away from the hero of the dish the seafood.

OK, maybe we just got an off day. But only 2 people out of 6 had a good meal. Firstly, I LOVE chowder. We got to the restaurant at 12.15 for lunch. The chowder was all gone!! WHAT!. So I chose another seafood, the scallops. Crumbed Tassy scallops. I couldn't tell if they were scallops or chicken pop corn. They were small, and cooked to within an inch of their tiny lives. Another person at the table ordered salt and pepper squid and it was over salted. Two ordered the crumbed corn patties and they were stodgy and slightly slimy textured, according to them. Not enjoyable at all. The hamburger did not get any complaints and the arancini balls got the thumbs up. They were a starter, but a good size for small eater. The deserts fared better than mains and all three ordered were a hit. The baked cheesecake, the citron tart and the peanut ice cream. So all the comments on the great seafood flaw me, but then we expect the best in TAS as seafood is our biggest draw card, if a restaurant cant get it right and/or don't even offer what is on the menu, then I am afraid it is a poor rating from me.

This restaurant has a brilliant view of the Derwent River, great for enjoying boats of all kinds sailing past. Really enjoyed the breaded scallops and house made chunky fries with garden salad recently on 2 occasions! Served with a glass of local Tassie Sparkling wine it made for a lovely lunch on a summer's day.

I found the lunch menu quite restrictive with not a lot of choices. For example, there are no meat dishes other than a beef burger. Clearly, it all depends on personal choice.
Drinks were quite expensive.
The position of the restaurant, right on the water, is magnificent and would be great on a weekend when many yachts would be nearby.
The service was efficient and friendly.

Well known venue .. had its ups and downs. We found food better this visit. Chick Burger, scallops+chips and fritters all exc.
View and coffee always good.
Home made chips fabulous BUT there should be a choice for a small serve which most women would chose rather than $3 surcharge.

This restaurant has good food at a reasonable price, but I feel their drink prices are completely over the top. To pay more for a beer here than at top Hobart restaurants seems quite greedy to me. Interestingly, although their food menus are on their web-site, I couldn't find their drinks prices prior to my visit..
