As locals, we have gone to this restaurant off and on over the past 20 years. Not sure how long the new owners have been in place. The food is really tasty and service is friendly and pleasant, but sadly incompetent. There was one waiter working front of house and service delivery. The wine list is kept in the waiter's... More

Been here a couple of times - food is really great - excellent quality - service is poor (although polite) - such great decor, but lacking some real enthusiasm from the staff. Wine list is poor (non existent?) - Someone needs to grab this little establishment and make it "buzz" - perfect location - lovely decor - great food -... More

Very disappointing - fish dish had bits of fish floating in a clear red liquid. The chicken saag was a yellowy soup with green bits and tasted like a casserole you grandma would make! Poppadoms and Naan were very oily. Avoid, there are lots of good restaurants in the Glenelg area, don't waste your money on Bay of Bengal.

I don't know where to start really..... No drinks menu, had to collect our own menus. Waited 50mins for onion bhajis to come out even thou had specified to bring it all together. Then waited another 40mins for the mains to come out. When they did come out they'd forgotten my girlfriend's curry and when I asked where the mushroom... More

Very standard and a bit limited choice of food. Food is mostly warm not hot - it looks like was re-heated prior to serving or prepared somewhere else and delivered to premises. While portions are relatively a good size and with nice flavours, the rice is always a problem. How come the cheapest ingredient is served in very small portions... More

When did the Bay of Bengal change owners, we always went there for both take away and ate in, but the last time, the food was not of the excellent quality that we expected.

Tried the groupon tasting menu. Good value ($20) for two with small dishes of rice, beans, dhal, yogurt, two pieces of tandoori chicken, and a glass of wine each. However, all the food was served luke warm, except for hot naans. Worse, all the dishes were bland without distinctive taste or spice. I enjoy Indian food, but this dinner left... More

Amazing! Smart menu and the accompaniments section of the menu is a treat to explore making their delicious curries even better! We had such a lovely evening here highly recommend, very gracious host, authentic flavours and surrounds combine to make it a special evening! Would definitely return.

Very disappointed with the quality of food, offering of house wine only, and staff who were pleasant and trying their best but obviously struggling. We have dined in previously & ordered takeaway on many occasions, over a number of years, and have always rated the food very highly. Unfortunately, our recent meal was very bland - just a creamy tomato... More

Description
The Bay of Bengal was the concrete result of many dreams. Del Lacota, owner/manager, had for many years nursed a desire to have a restaurant where he could offer people an opportunity to enjoy delicious food in a pleasant atmosphere, assisted by knowledgeable and friendly staff, and at affordable prices. When Del visited India in 1986 with his Calcutta born wife, he was charmed by both the people and the culinary specialities he enjoyed in each region he visited. On their return to Australia, Del set about learning what was needed to successfully cook Indian food. When in 1990, a small restaurant site became available in picturesque Glenelg, Del saw this as a window of opportunity to combine his visions. And so was born the Bay of Bengal (Bay, from the geographical location, and Bengal, from his wife's birthplace). From such an unassuming beginning, the Bay of Bengal has created a well deserved reputation for excellent Indian food in delightful surrounds. The reasonable costs and committed staff have resulted in a loyal following of patrons, both from within the local area, as well as further a field. To meet the demands of the growing clientele, the restaurant has had to be moved to larger adjacent premises; even these have required further expansion. Today, tourists enjoying Glenelg's historic attractions mingle with South Australians in the experience of the Bay of Bengal, one of the State's award winning restaurants.
