Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

On learning it was my friends bday we got delicious freshly made up eclairs and a couple of candles so I could tart up the bday cake. Also sampled some amazing gelato. Super friendly and accomodating plus amazing food. You must pop in!

We chanced upon Capannina after a dinner in Port Douglas and the gelato was absolutely delicious! True Italian gelato. More importantly, the owners are truly beautiful people and took the time to explain the making of the gelato and the different flavours. We had some great conversation about a local wildlife charity they supported and truly had a great experience here.

We went here every day they were open on our recent trip top Port Douglas! The ice cream is sensational, with loads of flavours that change every day. You can get a couple of flavours in one cup (a small is only $5 and generous in size) and honestly it's some of the best ice cream you will ever eat - creamy and smooth and the flavours really shine. Pistachio was my absolute favourite, and the kids loved the dragonfruit and chocolate. Well, we loved every one that we tried actually! Make a visit here a priority if you're in Port Douglas! They also do coffees and Italian desserts if you don't feel like ice cream (but, you'll feel like ice cream!). It was often really busy but staff are efficient and friendly, and happy to offer tastings.

I love Gelato and have learned to spot REAL Italian gelato establishments and Capannina is a rare find. You can taste the fresh ingredients rather than fake essences, for example the lemon gelato has a tart intense lemon citrus freshness.
The friendly owners were happy to give you a little taste so you can narrow down your choice and passionately talked about their ingredients and processes which are onsite – it takes a long time to make good gelato.
Here’s what to watch out for when choosing where to buy your gelato:
Gelato from a smaller gelateria with fewer seasonal flavours usually means you get the real deal. Gelato takes time to make properly using seasonal fruits so this makes it difficult to supply a large variety of options.
Establishments with many brightly coloured flavour choices piled high in the tub use artificial colourings and flavourings such as bottled essence. You can taste the difference. Fruit gelato should be deep in colour but muted, the more natural the colour the better for example lemon is more whitish than yellow.
Gelaterias where the product is piled high above the containers’ edge means a large number of emulsifiers and vegetable fats have been used to slow down the melting process. Real gelato is never filled higher than the top of its metal container as it will melt.
We visited regularly during our stay in Port Douglas and can’t speak highly enough of the quality of the gelato. My favourite was coffee (or tiramisu on another day) plus chocolate. The lemon was also a winner.

We had ice cream here a total of 6 times over 2 days just because it was amazing . Freshly made gelato. My partner has dietary restrictions so to see that they use individual scopes for each flavour of ice cream is nice to see as it doesn’t happen very often.

Hands down the best Gelato in Port Douglas. The Belgian Chocolate is completely divine as is the Lemon Myrtle - all made with local Mungalli Dairy Milk. Owners are super friendly and we even learned the Italian pronunciation of zabaglione

Best ice cream. You actually taste flavours and not just sugar. Very high quality. I loved the fact that I
Could choose two flavours even with regular size and generous portions. I tried chocolate and caramel and was to die for. I am

Fabulous passionfruit pannacotta, or for those who don’t like passionfruit, you could have it with cream - scrumptious. Papaya/lime gelato full of flavour and not sickly sweet - just right. Tastier than the claimed ‘best ice cream in the Daintree”.
Coffee was great too. Very friendly service and great opening hours.

Small but delicious selection of gelato flavours. Must be good because I’ve been back three times in three days! The chocolate variety is to die for....rich, dark and chocolatey with the smoothest texture. My partner enjoys the caramel variety - mmmm. I’ve tried the other gelateries in Port Douglas and in my opinion Campannina is the standout. I’m going to try one of the gorgeous looking cakes next time. The service is very friendly as well.

Went to Port Douglas for an ice cream and coffee. Found Capannina after a local recommended them. Gelato was utterly delicious and the coffee first class. One dirty chai latte with almond milk was brilliant and one skinny cap also excellent. Lady who served us was friendly and personable and made very nice conversation. Even offered to fill up our son’s water bottle, then gave us the kids ice cream for free! Port Douglas had that little village feel in the Main Street and was a great experience.

We stumbled upon this dessert bar when in Port Douglas and loved it! We tried a range of different flavoured gelato and it was all beautiful. The customer service is also fantastic, the lovely woman serving us was so friendly and a pleasure to deal with. Definitely worth a visit!

Wow this small establishment makes and serves one to the best gelato we have eaten and certainly at the very top of those in Australia. Unfortunately we only found it the evening before we departed. A very hospitable owner who is adventurous in the flavours developed. Congratulations.

This couple make the world's best ice treats. True! The tastes and texture of real icecream, gelato and sorbet are incredible. From licorice to Belgian chocolate to fruits of the forest to zabaglione and tiramisu and coconut. WOW. Do it! You know you want to

We walked past this gelati shop at Port Douglas so decided to give it a try. The gelati and sorbet was delicious and refreshing in taste. Absolutely loved the Soursop flavour!
Flavours tried: Soursop sorbet and Garden Mint gelati

Fabulous Italian style ice cream, with authentic, subtle flavours. We tried other ice creameries in Port Douglas during our 10 day stay (and we had an ice cream every day!!), and this was by far the best. We know, and love, our ice cream … and this place is a winner.
