My wife and I always make a point of dining here every time we are in Cairns, however, after the quality of the dishes we had this visit, we will reassess where we will eat next visit. The menu is a two or three course...with choices within each, but both are rather on the pricier side. Disappointed. Having said that, we love the atmosphere and the staff were as professional and helpful as they have always been.More

We stumbled upon this fabulous eatery while walking in downtown Cairns and decided to give it a try. We didn’t have a reservation but that wasn’t an issue, they accepted us right away. The steak rib eye and chicken fried rice and potatoes were amazing....The deserts were a work of art, the texture and taste were out of this world! A highly recommend Tamarind!More

Unfortunately great expectations that didn’t deliver. Obviously understaffed for the night. Friendly but generally poor service by inexperienced staff. One waitress plonking dishes on table as she was so rushed. Scallop entree was cold. Whole fish was dry and generally lacking. Duck curry was ok....Steak dish was ok. Cheese platter was just awful. Worst cheese platter I’ve ever been served. It was like hide and seek finding any cheese. Over $500. Paid $200 more than worth. Average bistro quality at best.More

I was looking forward to my first dining experience at rhe Tamarind Restaurant. The service was slow and not the best (especially for the price). We ordered a bottle of red wine from the menu, only to be told 10 mins later that particular wine...was not available. We then ordered duck curry from the menu, only to be advised it was not available. There is no choice but to have a 2 or 3 course menu which did not suit all of us at the table.More

Tamarind excelled itself again with a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner menu. Champagne and oysters on arrival, an entree smorgasbord, a great choice of mains and another smorgasbord of desserts made for a memorable night for two. My Penang Duck curry has to be Tamarind’s signature...dish; rich and wonderful! Service was attentive without being intrusive, and the set price of $99 was excellent value for money. This has to be one of Cairns’ outstanding restaurants!More

If this review came down to a question of ‘….how good was the whole barramundi dish?…’ it’d probably be 5/5 ….or perhaps 4/5 given the occupational hazards of dissecting a boney but lovely fish yourselves!! But this ‘special restaurant’ for Cairns was not a ‘special...restaurant’ for us by a long shot. We felt we purely ticked the ‘fine dining box’, handed over the requisite cash, and left scratching our heads what on earth we’d done to deserve that!!! On arrival, we were led to a completely dingy table at the back of the restaurant. We’d made a request in advance for a table with a nice outlook. Sure, not everyone gets their wish for good tables but there were several unoccupied at least ‘slightly’ nicer tables available than the one they tried to give us (that no one should be subjected to!) …..so we were granted one of those ‘slightly’ better tables but still expressed our displeasure about it all, and then a few minutes later we were moved to a window table after all - thank you!! However, that satisfied feeling then fell through the floor again when a) an awful looking and soggy little pair of (supermarket packet!!!!) Melba toasts with lacklustre chicken liver pate on them arrived on the table as appetisers and b) the BOTTLE of bubbles that we ordered was poured as just two glasses from an already open bottle …. and then c) to add to the mess, the entrees landed on the table even before we’d had the chance to think about touching those soggy Melba toasts as we were occupied sorting the bottle vs glass issue. It felt like it was going to be a loooooooong evening in only the first 30 minutes!!!!!! Essentially, for the price point, we couldn’t get excited about the dishes - taste, presentation, service or originality wise - other than that good ol’ whole Barra, that we had to pull to bits….. So nothing much more to add here :( Go somewhere else!!!!!! Tamarind has not grasped the concept of ‘fine dining’.More

Ate there 3 times in 2018 and 2020 with good experiences. This review is for Christmas night 2023. 2 people had degustation menu and 1 had matching wines. Lost 1 star for saltless and tasteless food. Dessert was too rich and too large. Lost 1...star for being overpriced ($170 per person, $60 for matching wines per person). Lost 1 star for lack of Christmas atmosphere and overly loud music. Lost 1 star for unresponsive staff. For a bill of ~$400 AUD for 2 people, we would not repeat or recommend the experience.More

I've broken up with Tamarind and am a little heartbroken. We have not eaten at Tamarind in around three years so were really excited to dine here again. We once called Tamarind ‘our restaurant’ as we just loved it so much. Unfortunately, after dining here...last week, we won't be back in a hurry. The service was great but the food just let the whole experience down. Whilst nothing was terrible, all of our four dishes just lacked love. From the entrees to our mains, it was like the detail, time, flavour and care that once set Tamarind high above the rest of establishments in Cairns is now gone. My husband ordered the coral trout (has eaten this many times) and it was just meh whilst I ordered the pork hoping it would be similar to the pork dish that used to be on the menu. Unfortunately, it was as though it was thrown on the plate after being reheated in the microwave. It was really disappointing when you are paying top dollar. Bye for now Tamarind. You were once so special.More

Tamarind was my choice for a special birthday dinner (you only turn 70 once!). This was our 4 visit over many years, but ... I don't know that it was the right choice. The food was expertly prepared and beautifully presented (but for one choice)....The prawn entree was a delicious and generous serve, as was my husband's choice of the lamb. One day I will move past the Penang Duck Curry, but I love it, and it was as good as my expectation. The Kingfish was perfectly cooked. The Macadamia & Coffee dessert was a balanced indulgence. But the cheese, ironically called "Australia's Finest Cheese Platter" was a major fail. Delivered to the table with no information : no provenance (what? where?) was given for the "local and southern sourced cheeses"; the crackers were 3 retro pieces of commercial melba toast and 5 wafers; the dried fruit was ??? a strawberry and a couple of raisins (?) and the nuts were mainly peanuts. It was the cheese platter you put together when someone unexpectedly calls by. The service was slick and professionally polished but lacking in friendly attentiveness ... rather AI Robotic. And given that the 70th had been mentioned when making the booking, maybe I expected a little more welcome than the perfunctory, arms length service we were given. Too slick for it to be a warm experience. Also re service, I have to say, I super appreciated being asked as we were being shown to our table by the personable front-of-house if the seating was appropriate for my mobility impaired husband ... thank you, that was excellent consideration!!! Yes, we will no doubt return when/if we are in Cairns but with lowered expectations of a fine dining experienceMore

One of the few fine dining choices in Cairns. The service and the decor is in keeping with a fine dining restaurant. So it is a pleasant experience. The menu is interesting, however the food itself is good but not great… I felt the menu...and the food was confused and seemed to be trying to be interesting and different but didn’t really hit the mark. There are other restaurants in Cairns who have simpler menus but they stay in their lane and hit the mark everytime, I just didn’t feel Tamarind did this (was my second visit as I thought maybe the first time was a one off). Great wine list is a plus. Overpriced in my mind based on the eating experience, however in terms of a fine dining experience and the service it is ticking some boxes there. I won’t be going back as their is much tastier and nicer food available for less money.More
