Bagus halal Indonesian restaurant at Caravella Backpackers on Esplanade gets good reviews thru many years. Last night was no exception. It being Monday it was not busy. Four of us chose 3 platters to share: Medium Rendang Chicken, lamb satay and smashed beef curry, all came with hot sambal & fresh veggie pickles. We ordered 3 ‘pecel’ a mixed cooked/fresh salad with peanut sauce dressing was expensive at aud7.5 a pop. Main courses at $20.50 each of big helpings was cheap, Pecel pushed it up. In summary: it was a good food experience.

Have travelled to Bali several times and elsewhere in Indonesia, can definitely validate that this is authentic Indonesian food. Decent value for the fare and portion size. Friendly service, decor/signage is dated but don’t judge this cafe by its cover. Had Nasi Goreng, Mee Goreng and some spring rolls. Fooled me for a second when I felt like I was at a cafe in Bali and not Cairns. Would recommend.

We both had Nasi Goreng, one with added chicken (6) and one with lamb (4) satay skewers. Wow! Delicious authentic flavours, sambal served on a side dish which allows you to regulate the heat 😁 Very good coffee and my iced coffee was perfect. Great value for the generous serves. Friendly, helpful staff and excellent service. Highly recommended if you love Indonesia fare.

Not sure what all the other reviews were talking about. We weren’t that impressed with our food experience here. The cafe is very much warung style. No problem with that. We just didn’t feel the food was cooked that well. The mie goreng was “gluggy” and not that tasty. The sate were ok but very small. It didn’t taste like authentic Balinese food We wouldn’t try again.

We'd read all the great reviews so decided to try Bagus earlier this month. The wait time in the queue to order was quite a while (people in front of us were getting really angry as they'd been there for ages) then the wait time for the food was very long - almost an hour. Ordered a dish with fried chicken, but the coating was falling off in chunks on the plate. Not nearly enough sauce with the dish. Although it's not the fault of the owners, there were some really obnoxious men on a nearby table, so our dinner was supplemented by comments about a woman they work with being a c*** and a moll. Lovely.

Quiet place a little bit outside the crowded areas. The personnel were very kind and helpful, but the food was average (but not bad in any way). The nasi goreng (Indonesian fried rice) had a nice flavor to it but was only warm on the outside and not in the middle which makes me think that it was precooked and then microwaved before serving.

What can I say. AMAZING! Traditional Indonesian food at its best and best thing is it’s found right in heart of Cairns along the Esplanade. We were staying at apartment next door so was very handy after our big day trips when your exhausted and can’t be bothered cooking for the family. We ordered Nasi Goreng with chicken and Nasi Goreng with x4 skewers. For three of us we paid $55 and let me tell you it was plenty to fill us all up. Decor is nothing fancy but if you can overlook this place comes highly recommended.

I was expecting more from the reviews, however was dissappointed with the quality of food. Ordered the chicken skewers, spring rolls, Nasi goreng and Chicken Rendang Ayam. Food came out super fast, however tasted like it had just been warmed up in the microwave and flavours not very authentic/nice (having been to many Indonesian eateries). The Nasi Goreng was very peppery which is all you could taste. The Rendang watery and chicken texture wasn’t very fresh. Chicken skewers were drowned in some type of satay sauce which the chicken was barely warm and not hot as you would normally expect. Hopefully it was just our luck on the day, however we won’t be dining here again.

What a fabulous place this is! Service is quick and pleasant and the food is as close to traditional Indonesian you'll find outside Indonesia. We shared Nasi Goreng (fried rice), Mee Goreng (fried noodles) and Rendang Sapi (beef rendang) sooooo delicious. Now that we've found it, we'll be back. It is located opposite Muddy's playground on The Esplanade.

I’m not a connoisseur of this type of cuisine, but I enjoyed my lunch at Bagus Cafe. It was, I imagine, a good example of tasty Indonesian food. The cafe itself is very basic, with practical but ordinary decor, in a pretty location. I had the Beef Rendang which was well spiced and delicious. It was accompanied by rice and a couple of other small additions. I avoided the sambal like the plague. My husband had the chicken Goreng which was quite spicy, and also accompanied by rice and a salad. He enjoyed it. He also ordered the additional peanut sauce which had too much chilli for him, and was a little unpleasant - a warm sauce on a cold cabbage slaw. On the whole, it was a lovely lunch.

Brilliant experience. We are so grateful firstly, that even though Bagus had 'closed', they remained open for us. We felt welcomed and relieved as we thought we had missed out. The owner has a huge smile and the kitchen was quick! The seating area is humble but we felt it was almost like being in Bali. We ordered the grilled chicken, the duck and the beef rending, as well as some satay skewers. Everything was delicious! Termikasih Bagus! Baik Baik!

We ate here 3 times while we were in Cairns. In hindsight we should have eaten here more. On our first visit my wife had the Nasi Goreng with the egg on top. She loved it so much she ordered it on our next two visits. I had the Rendang Sapi, Kambing Dudut and Rendang Ayam. All dishes were outstanding. The staff were friendly and always smiling. We generally found dining in Cairns to be quite expensive. But prices at Bagus are way cheaper than any of the other restaurants in the vicinity of the Esplanade. We also enjoyed the location; sitting across from the park during the evening was really pleasant. Next time we’re in Cairns this will be our go to place.

We never miss an opportunity to eat at Bagus and often plan our stay in Cairns around meals there. It has the best Indonesian food I have eaten In Australia - and is also better than a lot of Indonesian food I have eaten in Indonesia. The atmosphere is unpretentious and the owner/chefs take great pride in their food. On a recent visit we were told that our enjoyment was the source of great happiness. Love it!

We were lucky enough to walk past the Bagus Cafe this afternoon and enjoyed some amazing food for lunch to takeaway. The food was so delicious we ordered again for dinner tonight also. It was so beautiful in every aspect, the flavours, the freshness and I also note the friendly service and efforts to cater for my wife who is a Coeliac. As a young man I traveled to Indonesia a fair bit, and I don’t recall eating food quite as delicious as what we experienced today. So thank you so much for the wonderful food, it has made our holiday even more amazing.

Thank you very much Bagus Cafe, me & my family visited from Sydney & we really enjoyed our Halal meals & even came back for more during our tropical visit to Cairns for the first time. We were blown away with the flavour & quality of your meals as we didn't expect it to be that good! Comparing to all the restaurants we've been to. It was really fresh & delicious ma shaa Allah, couldn't be better - please don't ever change a thing! People looking for something different & authentic, priced so well & a lovely warm heart from the owners, must try! Perfectly located across the road from the water features for kids & all ages! Can't wait for our next visit upper north!
