Given the generally 5 starred reviews about this restaurant on this website, we decided to host a birthday dinner last Saturday. Being Asians, we thought that the food of such a reputable restaurant would be up to scratch. Imagine our shock when the experience turned...out to be far from what other reviewers were reporting! First, the order was mixed up by the waitress. Two different beef dishes turned up when only one was ordered. This would have been resolved right from the start if the waitress bothered to confirm the orders by repeating them as is normal in the restaurant trade. Nothing of the sort happened. Then, the food arrived. As an Asian who has eaten Asian food across four continents, I do know what good Asian food is like and should be. What arrived was not. The Fillet Steak Hong Kong Style was heavily laced with red colouring and sugar [a very effective taste enhancer for Western palates]. The Szechuan Chilli Beef did not even have a hint of chilli in it, much less accompanied by dried chilli pods as to be expected from a Szechuan dish! The King Prawns in Wine Sauce was particularly disappointing..the prawns were absolutely tasteless. I had to dip them heavily in soy sauce to get any taste at all. The Chinese Broccolli in Oyster Sauce was probably the worst I have tasted in my lifetime. The dish was served with hardly any oil to enhance the dish. The oyster sauce was just slopped onto the vegetables. And it was the saltiest version I have ever tasted. Good oyster sauce is slightly salty to tickle the taste buds while simultaneously bringing out the flavours of the other ingredients. What was served tasted like it came straight from a salt vat. Salt is a preservative, and when used in a large quantity, it masks the qualities of other ingredients. Go figure! The only dish worth eating was the roast duck, and that, one can buy from any Chinese butchery. When the manager was informed about the order mix up, all that was done was a query for the waitress. No attempt was made to resolve the issue or even an apology by way of some dessert fruits [customary in Chinese restaurants after dinner]. From an Asian perspective, any review of it being "Best Chinese Restaurant in Brisbane" can only mean that I must have been living in a parallel universe. Oh well, it seems that other Chinese reviewers here have also pooh-poohed this eatery. I wonder why? Is it because as the cuisine originated from Asia, we do know what we are talking about?More
