My friend and I both lived in China for many years. In fact we met in Beijing. We go to restaurants for the food, not the ambience or lack of it. We also know that the term "Chinese food" is vague. What's eaten in Sichuan...is not what's eaten in north China and both are far from what's eaten in Shanghai and so on. It was a first time visit to Golden Star Kitchen for us and a revelation in some ways. Not so much for the food we ordered from the menu yesterday, which was great, but for what you can order if you know what to ask for in Chinese. We can't wait to go back, both for what's on the menu and for what's not. At this point I would rate it as the best real Chinese restaurant in Darwin.More

Went there on the recommendation of a food critic. It was very difficult to find any information on this restaurant, tucked away in Wagaman, a small northern suburb of Darwin. Rang to make a booking thinking it would be very popular, the lady didn’t even...take my name. Turned up and the place was only half full. Ordered three dishes: special fried rice; roast duck and tofu wit mushrooms hotpot. Very long wait, around 40 minutes. Then Noy the rice and duck came out. We had nearly finished the meal before the hotpot came out. Food was good, not amazing. But service was lacklustre.More

We were invited to join friends for dinner here last night and wondered if it would be worth the trip from the city. It certainly is unprepossessing from the outside and small and cramped inside with basic tables chairs etc. The menu is old style...Chinese with pictures etc. However our friends have been dining here for a few years and had preordered the scallops which were delicious and well presented. We also shared barramundi and sizzling steak with special fried rice. This was all very good. I shared one serve of quail which was overcooked. My only complaint would be we had to ask for serviettes and were given one small one each. The family running the restaurant certainly know how to cook Chinese food. Would returnMore

Okay let's be honest, unless you can speak Mandarin/Cantonese, then I'm sorry to say but your experience might be below subpar. I won't deny that the female owner is arrogant, bossy, and can come across rude, but boy when food is involved, everything changes. Every...Chinese person in Darwin will have at the very least dined here before and tell you this is just one of the best Chinese restaurants FOR Darwin standard and coming from a Chinese person like myself, I can confirm this. Don't be deceived by its shabby and run-down exterior/interior, because like the saying goes: never judge a book by its interior.More

Wanted chinese and hungry. Searched recommendations here in Darwin and within our vicinity.. Great 4* takeaway. Ordered chicken satay, combination meat n black bean sauce and special fried rice. Picked up order: chicken skewers fried until they looked like raisins (no added flavour) satay sauce...salty salty salty, no flavor worst I ever had. (im not spring chicken either). fried rice bland, black bean sauce colored water and again no taste. I called the shop asked to speak to manager. She was not at all phased or apologetic by my disgust of our food being awful. Said bluntly "bring food back". This was after I asked for my money back. Next day I returned food the male in the shop went through the brought back containers....why? I said it was disappointing and they should appreciate the feedback and improve their cooking. She refuned with no care, with a comment "we cant please everyone"..wow.....BIG WARNING GO ELSEWHERE..I wish I had seen a review like mine.More

We dined here with friends. However, let me qualify my review by saying we had an extremely difficult eater in our group who insisted on minimal salt and soured the experience for everyone. Firstly, the pluses. The Crispy Beef was among the best I've tasted...and the Sweet and Sour Pork was also good. A minor improvement would be the provision of serviettes. A normal amount of salt would have lifted the Crispy Chicken and the Ginger Barramundi. We will dine here again without our fussy friend.More

The local Wagaman shops is not the most attractive of local centers but it does hide one of the best Chinese take away restaurants in Darwin bar none. Having lived here for over 20 years my family has always been willing to drive further afield...if required to get good takeaway. Golden Star is run by a young family couple that work really hard at providing some of the best Chinese tucker you will ever eat. The restaurant is very simple and has only 4 or 5 tables that always seem to be full of their fellow countrymen which is always a great indication of authentic cooking. We have tried most of the menu and it always comes hot, fresh and super tasty. Without doubt the best Chinese takeaway in Darwin, I hope this level of service continues and we don't loose this great team any time soon.More

It does look a bit rough on the outside, but the most wonderful gems look like a rock until checking out whats inside. There has not been one dish that is less than very good. If its busy then sit and wait. it will be...worth your while. Its BYO and prices are so very fair.More

This is a family run business. Excellent food at a reasonable price. We had a sit down banquet for 5 and it must be the cheapest in town. The only thing I was disappointed with is that they do not have tea on the menu...as we had a birthday cake with us. Will go again as it is nice and close to home.More

We ordered a special fried rice, combination satay and honey chicken for takeaway. When we picked up the order the place was full of people dining, we thought we must have finally found some good Chinese food in Darwin... Unfortunately not. The fried rice lacked...flavour, the honey chicken was soggy and the satay was the most bland and tasteless chinese dish we have ever had. Full of cabbage and Bok Choy, very little meat. At $15.50 and $16.50 for the meat dishes, we felt extremely ripped off considering the taste and quantity we received. Not sure where people who have left previous reviews have eaten in the past but we have had way better Chinese food at half the price and there is no way we would return here or recommend to family and friends.More

Its tucked away, hard to find and worth the effort. Great, well cooked suburban chinese. Its cheap, cheerful and BYO. Service is usually quick and always friendly. We adore this place.

It was my first time here last week and believe me when I tell you this, this restaurant definitely dishes up some real and authentic Chinese food! You won't find many Chinese restaurants like this in Darwin until you look towards these suburban outlets which...in my opinion, don't get enough recognition. From the looks of it, this is a small family business run by a Chinese couple (both being head chefs). I think the much preferred option is to call up beforehand to order the dishes you want so that way you don't need to wait for long when you dine in, or pick up. Anyhow, my family ordered the salt and pepper bugtails, stir-fry eggplant, stuffed tofu puffs, and Peking duck; all which was flavoursome, tasty and resembled dishes in China.More

Small Chinese restaurant that doesn't get enough credit for what it is. There is no decor or fancy furniture. No signage. Wooden chopsticks. But I cannot rave about how much I loved the food. It does cater for the westernised Chinese food but still has...authentic Asian cuisines. The scallops (pictures) were amazing. The garlic flavour is outstanding. Although this dish must be preordered. The salt and pepper squid is so crispy and delicious. The eggplant dish has a great flavour to it. Definitely recommend for a casual dinner or take away.More

Best roast duck, cooked in the special oven in the kitchen! Also fresh barrumundi with ginger and shallots. Really one of the best chinese food I've tasted in Darwin. Lovely family run business, father whipped up all five dishes in minutes - we'll be back!

My wife and I ordered over the phone for takeaway. We ordered chicken & sweet corn soup, chicken fried rice, ginger scallops and chicken & cashew. The soup was ok but chicken in it was just little bits of gristle. The other 3 main dishes...ALL TASTED THE SAME! Completely bland, no taste at all and the bits of chicken (if it was chicken) were grisly and very undesirable. We just can't believe how tasteless it all was! The service was also quite unfriendly with no personality. Appeared like the lady just wanted our money. The shop cleanliness looked ok, however totally smelled like someone had defecated just outside. We paid $51 for our takeaway which was a complete waste of money. We will never go back there again!More

Its not my place but I am sure they do. Just make sure they use tapioca starch or potato flour to thicken, not cornflour. I take my own konjac noodles in and they do chow mein for me.
