Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The very positive thing is that the food is good and tasty. May have queue outside, and then pay a 10% surcharge on Sunday (common in Sydney), it is an order by QR code, which is often a sign of not much service, and this...was the case, food delivered quickly plates taken away quickly seem keen to get you out.More

This restaurant is so popular that usually you need to queue outside (especially on weekends) to get a table. On a Wednesday night at 1800 we queued for about 10 minutes which we had no problem with as we could watch through the front window...one of the staff making roti (throwing the dough in the air, enlarging it and then folding it numerous times). We had roti (obviously), sambal squid and a chicken curry. All were delicious and authentic - my husband is Malaysian Chinese so he does know. The sambal was so good we wanted to take some home and though the jars were sold out at this restaurant i have ordered some online. We can understand now why Mamak is so highly recommended. Next time we'll try the satay.More

This is still the best roti in Australia!! And a big thumbs up for the chicken curry and the fish curry (mackerel), although they could have been a bit hotter - they were served lukewarm. Mamak should be on everyone's must do list for Sydney!...14/04/2022 Still the best roti in Australia There's a reason why there's a queue outside the restaurant every night! Every dish we ordered was well-cooked and presented! The roti is amazing - fresh, fluffy and crispy! 11/09/2017 Malaysian Hawker food at its best! This is Malaysian hawker food at its best!! We visit Mamak every time we visit Sydney and there is always a queue - even on Monday nights!! The food is really authentic - a perfect fusion of Indian, Malay and Chinese flavours - and all the dishes we have tried are excellent. The roti is the best we have eaten in Australia - and it's great to watch the chefs at the front of the restaurant making the roti and murtabak!More

Had not been back to this branch for a few years but our experience this was good. Staff seat you very quickly (if there is no queue) and if you prefer to pay by cash, order from the front counter and pay otherwise use the...QR code and order from your table. All the food choices we ordered was tasty - satay, nasi lemak, roti canai, mee goreng and ais kacang. Happy customers!More

A delicious meal - roti cenai - although one was just not enough. Delicious and worth every penny. Friendly and fast service, I'm glad I made the effort.

Amazing night in the most authentic Malaysian restaurant in town. Quick service, traditional meals, and very tasty. We took the roti which was served generously and the sauces very savoury. In addition we had the beef and chicken satay : they were outstanding : A...MUST !!! Don’t be scared about the line, it goes very quickly. Worth the money : very cheap for a restaurant in Sydney, in Chinatown !! We recommend it 1000% !!More

I’m in Sydney on holiday and a friend recommended this place highly. There was a long line waiting. To be honest, I thought it was over-priced for the amount of food served and the curry was really average. I wouldn’t go back again.

Way back in April 2012 I wrote a glowing review of the iconic roti restaurant Mamak in Sydney’s Goulburn St which was much deserved, then. I have returned many times since, but the latest visit was, sad to say, a shocker. First the roti canai,...an obvious staple, rather than the usual light & fluffy consistency was tough and uncooked in parts. Unforgivable. Then the rojak (Asian salad with peanut sauce) was limp and a little stodgy. It tasted like it had been pre-prepared which is never how you do a salad. Back in the good old days the queue to get into Mamak at any time of the day or night was legendary & long. I should have known something was up when I got a table instantly upon arrival during this lunch hour. Sydney’s foodie scene is notoriously fickle but Mamak has remained an institution for more than a decade because of its foundation on honest, simple, fresh and tasty fare. It gives me no pleasure to say this but it would be a terrible shame if the restaurant were to fade away for want of sticking to these simple but powerful founding principles.More

Pretty disappointed, considering all the rave reviews. Lining up gives the impression that you are waiting for something amazing and then you go inside and half the restaurant is empty and everyone is squeezed into tiny tables packed next to each other, when there were...so many empty tables! I was with my mum, sister in law and nephew, my mums curry came first and about 20 minutes later we got our rotis and then eventually our means. Mum loved the chicken curry but hardly any chicken inside mainly bone, I have the vegetable curry which had a nice flavour but needed sal added and the potato was too hard. I was really looking forward to this meal but it’s just not enjoyable when you are cramped into a corner with people right at your back. Maybe takeaway would be better.More

What a find! We were only in Sydney for two evenings and happened upon Mamak. We arrived at 6.15 p.m. and joined the queue. It was certainly worth the wait. The roti was divine as was the satay. We just couldn’t manage a dessert which...was a shame. Excellent value for money and you can BYO alcohol for a small surcharge.More

Food was excellent but was put off by the aggression shown by a waitress who asked us if we had paid the $4 a head corkage charge. We had paid and had already received our wine glasses from another waitress (who had confirmed we had...paid). I understand that you have to keep an eye on customers when they are paying via an app, but please try to be friendly and don't harass diners if they already have wine glasses. Online menu suited me and was clear and easy to use, but my partner's eyesight is not great so he would have struggled on his own.More

This restaurant advertises gluten free options, however when we went there we were told that there were NO gluten free options. Very annoying when you are a coeliac. Please get your details correct and stop wasting your potential customers time.

Heard about the newly opened Mamak in Paramatta. Went with my family. I thought that I can park my car at the Paramatta Square parking lot. It would be much better compared to my visits to Mamak Sydney. BIG MISTAKE! It was a Sunday. There...is no public parking at Paramatta Square. We had to walk from the Westfield parking lot. Finding the place was quite difficult. Please don't waste your time calling them for directions. Their staff needs a crash course in giving directions. When we finally arrive, then I realized why some of the reviews of the place says that it is quite small. IT IS VERY SMALL! I reckon there was only about 8 small tables. And there is no toilet in Mamak Paramatta. And there were many people waiting for tables. I am not going to waste my time waiting. We decided to have dinner at Papparich. Spacious, nice and cosy. You have been warned.More

We read rave reviews of this place and their roti & satays but we weren't really impressed. They brought our satays 10 minutes before our roti was served, and the taste was just ok. They skimped on the sauces served. Won't be returning when there...are so many other yummy restaurants nearby.More

The food is always consistently good from Mamak however for deliveries and takeaway all containers need to be wrapped in plastic film as the food always arrives with sauces outside the containers and messy food bags that contain other items. The outer carry bag also...becomes soaked and could not be used by the delivery man to bring the food to the door. Each plastic dish and foil food bag were delivered individually – no carry bag containing the entire order. The poor delivery guy had to clean his bike food basket of all the spilt sauces. Unfortunately there is still ability to request a small container of chili sambol which should always be a free option on each dish considering the current prices/dish. The only option for chilli sambol is to buy a $16 (plus delivery surcharge) jar. If the food containers were wrapped properly for delivery & takeaway and they included free small container chilli sambol upon request I would give them 5/5.More
