Oh my lord. JUST GO HERE. The vibes are hectic and the burgers are freaking incredible. Mary’s burger double the meat and cheese. I started taking tiny bites because I didn’t want it to end. Just come here for god sake
What a surprise! Such an interesting ambiance and something I have not seen in Australia before feels like Berlin style. The food was great the burgers and chicken were fantastic. I really like the whole concept. This was first visit but I will return again.
I like Marys .. I love the burgers, the creepy vibe, wall art .. all original .. funny story last visit .. registered for Covid , no problem ... when trying to pay cash for a beer I was informed that they could only accept...correct change , due to strict cash handling COVID rules to guard against transmission of germs etc ... " Ok , fair enough, .. your venue, your rules .. " I get it ... I paid with card and then watched as the barman opened my stubby of Budweiser with his dirty bare hands .. so cash handling is OUT though OK to rub his dirty fingers around the neck of the bottle that I drink from ... really ... I just shook my head ...More
The over zealous doorman and his COVID Marshall Metallica girl honestly believe their role is vital in keeping this establishment patronised. After lining up on a dark narrow Newtown footpath with probably syringes at foot and somewhat “odd” folk everywhere we were escorted to a...dining space with only a third of tables occupied. These guys take the COVID-19 spacing rules seriously! They don’t need to have a full house as when a restaurant sells fried chicken for $40 for 8 pieces the profit is that good, numbers aren’t important. The Uber kool waiter immediately asks for our food and drinks order. The menu is written with chalk on the walls. We know what we want. I want a beer n burger and get shot down by this pip squeak that he suggests we drink water and have a beer after eating. Turns out we think, the door staff have tagged us as being intoxicated. This discrimination was instigated whilst lining up. Metallica girl interrogating my wife and I on “where have you been today, what have you got up to tonight etc”. It was 8.30. I asked him/her what was she implying as I could see where she was going with her condescending questions. We had not had a single drink. As we don’t fit the normal clientele we were singled out and refused service of alcohol. They were wrong. We both chose the Mary’s burger and fries. Waited 1/2 an hour to inform the wait staff that the table next to us have received their meal 10 minutes after sitting down. She thought “we” could laugh it off. She was wrong. Two plastic baskets arrived with the goods. The burgers are good. Very good. However the guy who manage’s the fries, cooking, salting and serving, obviously comes from a family of table salt manufacturers and is ensuring his family’s business remains healthy while we the diners are served up a bowl of salt with fries. The music is loud, and the joint very dark. It has atmosphere in spades. The service staff are average and although we’ve been here at least a dozen times- never again. There are much better burger bars around.More
Maybe I’m at the point in my life that I don’t get millennial humour? From the crude drawings on the walls; the bar tender tip cup suggestions (the other glass suggested a vulgar reference to an online video (two tips one cup); the dim lighting...paired with moody music, Mary’s wasn’t a great experience. The burgers were nice- pricey, but nice. Nothing to write home about; not worth a second visit.More
We have eaten at Marys before and really enjoyed it. Today was less compelling. We ordered a cheese and chicken burger respectively which came with chips. We also ordered a side of mash. Whilst the burgers tasted good they looked squashed and unappetising. The chicken...burger had a lot of bun compared to filling. The gravy on the mash was very salty and bordered on unpleasant. Given the competition in Newtown I hope this is just an off day for Mary's. Think we might be going out for a second dinner later!More
Loud and dirty. Staff don’t seem to care at all. As someone with food intolerances it was tricky to order without a menu (you just have to read the wall). Staff weren’t helpful/convincing that they knew what was in the burgers
Unfriendly and inattentive staff in what should be a fun and inviting venue. Waitress seemed more keen to leave than to make sure her guests (table of 7) were satisfied.
It has been three years now that I came to Mary's for the first time. And after all this time, this still is the best burger experience in Sydney. Not only the best burger itself, but the complete experience. If you come to Sydney, you...need to visit!More
Burgers always inconsistent, rare, med, well done ??? Why dont you just choose one instead of making it a lottery for people, or even better ask the customer how they want the pattie cooked if you can’t get it right all the time. Overrated won’t...go back.More
We have been searching high and low for burgers better than the Mary’s burger and we are convinced we will never find one. We flew to NZ to try the famous Ferg burgers but it was no match to the succulent, delicious burgers from yours...truly. YES some may say they are small BUT size doesn’t matter when it comes to good burgers. They have attained the perfect ratio of patty, cheese and brioche. If you’re feeling frisky, you can try their wings with mash, which fall off the bone. Ultimately, eating here will change your life forever. We HIGHLY recommend you pay a visit.More
Loved the burgers and mash with gravy. Quick efficient service, albeit a bit tight upstairs. Definitely a place to visit for a feed and a few drinks if around the area!
As a burger lover - I would rate this as the best burger in Australia. The Cheeseburger with double meat and double cheese is simply party in the mouth time. Have some chicken and potato and gravy as shares and you have food heaven. And...the atmosphere and staff are uber cool.More
The burgers are amazing. It is a little difficult to find but I think that's half the fun. My only issue is that it's impossible to sit there and just have a drink; you need to also eat. It genuinely makes me re-think the venue...when I'm in Newtown.More
