What's not to love about Mr Wong. Groovy back street entry, gorgeously converted heritage building, service with a smile and food that takes Chinese (usually not a preference of mine) to a whole new level. These guys don't miss a beat - there's an incredible wine list and the ingredients are fresh and top quality. The steamed dumplings I could eat everyday and the lamb cutlets - well let's just say they've just set me up for a lifetime of disappointment for everywhere else I order them. Book if you can or stick in there for the wait - either way, it's definitely worthwhile a visit to Mr Wong.

$100.00 per head to reserve a Table. Phew. Very good COVID practices are undertaken with the entrance staff being strict outside and inside. Once seated we waited for about 10 minutes until we hailed assistance with tap water being poured. We chose the $84.00 each banquet and a adequate mid priced bottle of wine. The waitress disappeared never to be seen again. We hailed a waiter who advised it will be hear soon. This said it was The best Chinese we have had in a long time. Would have given a 5 but for the average service.

Great place to go and eat in, great atmosphere, ha an Old China feeling that was very cosy and relaxing. From entering at 5:30 pm cause there was only 4 of us we could not book til[ after 9:30 pm. part of 6 or more and you can book any time. The Hostess at the front was very welcoming and organised our table fairly quickly. We were ushered to the downstairs area that was very nice and away from a lot of the upstairs / entry traffic. we had the peeking duck and pancakes, seafood rice, an amazing sweet and sour pork, very different to the usual sweet and sour, Angus Beef cubes with pepper sauce, green veg all recommended by the staff. Very different, great-tasting food, great service by all the staff. Maybe the staff could give you a little more space, they hover and serve you very well indeed. Only criticism is that I believe just a little expensive. could possibly drop prices on drinks and take a slice of the food prices. Hope you have as good an experience as us. Enjoy.

Not sure if my review reverted back to draft or what but it was written months ago... Mr Wong was recommended by a friend who visited. We decided to go that night and called to ask for a table. They didn’t have any and told me to walk in. Fine. Walked in at about 7.30pm there was a long gazillion queue. We were then ushered to the bar. After close to 1.5 hours for some reason those who came after us got their table already. We suspected that they forgot our turn! I kept going back to check and they finally gave us “the next available table”. We got our table close to 9.30pm! Cocktails we had were not great. Food we ordered were good enough for bars. Poorly done fried rice, decent roast pork which is not top notched but good enough for bar, too salty because they poured the sauce over the duck (should be served separately). The saving grace is the long brand which to be honest any restaurant can do it. This place serves typical Chinese food with an exorbitant price just because it’s served in a posh overrated environment. Service is also another big question- it’s so busy that the staffs can barely attend to us. It takes really almost forever to get someone to come to us. We had to wait for almost everything, the only thing that was fast were the food. The food came really fast licke within 5-10 mins of ordering. So why is everything else so slow?!?! Are they severely understaffed? Slow to everything no wonder it takes forever to turnaround a table. I can’t recommend this place at all, they have such a poor reservation system, slow service, subpar food - do not need to squeeze in this place when you can get such food in typically anywhere. Unless you don’t mind paying for the ambience, don’t expect top quality food...

My husband booked a table for 6, the table we taken to was a table for 4 set up for 6 so blatantly not enough room. We ordered a banquet for 6 at $84 a head. As many have said on here already the food is overrated. Don't get me wrong it's nice but it is not the best Chinese food I've ever had. Then we come to the customer service. It's shockng. The staff are pompous and bordering on rude. The sommelier was so far up his own backside it was comical, dude you pour wine. It took them 45 minutes to take our order and considering they told us we only had a 2 hour slot for our table it was a bit of a joke. Luckily once the food started to come it was quite quick. With wine, the total bill came to just under $900. The full bill was paid for on one card. When I asked for a receipt you'd thnk I'd asked them for it to be written on parchment in Sanskrit. The first excuse for not being able to give me one is that the card machine had ran out of paper, 10 minutes later nothing, asked again and the waitress huffed and tutted!! Cut a long story short, after asking 4 times of asking my husband demanded to see the manager. It is clear why the staff have such an attitude problem, it comes directly from the manager. We were literally gobsmacked at how rude he was. If a secret camera had been pulled out to say we'd been in a Fawlty Towers sketch it would've explained it all. Unfortunately it wasn't, they just a very expensive, overrated restaurant with rude staff.

Lively, and somewhat noisy, back street restaurant with great atmosphere of pre war China. We had Mr Wongs Banquet (Aus $100 each) which offered a good choice of dishes where there were about even numbers of 'hits than misses'. Some dishes were disappointingly bland but others very good. The service was poor. The food initially was slow to arrive but then after the first dish arrived the other dishes seemed to come out over a short timescale meaning that our small table was completely cluttered and overloaded. Tables are very close so you find that you are often bumped by either other customers of staff. Needed to chase the staff several times to get drinks and also the bill. For a bill of Aus$272 for 2 people they need to considerably up their game on the service, particularly the speed of service and not overcrowd the small tables. Staff need better management as they all seem to be rushing around but then can forget your order.

Forget this place. Whet to lunch with a friend, booking under his name, they took $200 from his credit card to secure the table. At the end of the meal we asked to settle the bill, hadn't spent $200 and they said bad luck, they do not refund the difference. You're expected to eat more than $200 worth of food between 2 people. Never again & no referrals.

It was tricky finding the place but worth the hunt ! The ambience and restaurant deco is beautiful. We had yum Cha which was reasonably good . The lamb dumpling was different and worth trying. The desserts was the stand out for me . The mango pudding and green tea cake was delicious! The team was really kind as well to decorate my friends dessert with a candle and edible greeting message when they found out it was her birthday. Such a lovely experience here.

I dined here recently with my 14 year old. We arrived around 6.30 pm on a Thursday night - there was a small queue but no tables immediately available so we were offered the choice to sit and dine at the bar downstairs, which we took. It wasn’t that comfortable so we were then able to move to a table, which was much better. The Peking duck rice pancakes were fantastic! Crispy skin, good sized portions of tender meat and ample other ingredients all made for great eating. We also enjoyed the fried rice. Can’t wait to come back with friends for a banquet - loved the food and the decor.

We (a group of 8 ladies in their more mature years) have been going to Mr Wong for lunch each year for several years now so, like Julian, I was surprised to have to pay $808.00 when I booked. I phoned to query what would happen if we didn’t spend the entire amount and was assured I would be refunded. Fortunately I asked for a receipt at the end of the lunch because we hadn’t spent the entire amount. My first two phone calls afterwards assured me the money would be in my account within 5-10 days, then it went to 14 days. On about the fourth call the male on the phone tried to tell me my bill had been $800. My receipt told me otherwise and it included gratuity and a service charge. He said he’d check. I didn’t hear back so phoned again about three days later. The lady this time was more helpful a d said she’d look into it. Then she phoned me back and asked if I could forward a copy of my receipt which I did. Within half an hour I received an automated message saying the balance would be put into my account within 5-10 days. It appeared about three days later minus another $8 presumably for the inconvenience I caused them by following up. Obviously our group isn’t in the demographics they want to encourage not having a corporate account or being in the position not to question overcharging. What has always been a great experience for us visiting Mr. Wong was certainly soured this time.

Our Uber driver recommended Mr Wong’s and showed us the alley way to the restaurant as we passed by it. It’s tucked away and has poor signage. We went for dinner without reservations around 6pm and waited about 20 mins. The steamed shu mai and crab fried rice were excellent. The eggplant dish was a little too deep fried for me, but had good flavor.

Our GPS lead us down a obscure back lane just a block or so away from our hotel, The Radisson Blu in Sydney, and it was so well hidden that we had to ask a waiter from another restaurant if we were in the right alley. Luckily we were and maybe just 50 feet away. Once we saw the sign and looked in the windows we knew we had the right place as in was nearly full and really rocking. Went in and got one of the last tables for two, passing a bunch of larger groups waiting at the door. The music was loud, the people were just as loud and the place was filled with every demographic! We ordered a couple glasses of Sauvignon and on the advice of your lovely waitress a couple of dishes, one shrimp concoction and one chicken and veggies. The food was great, the wine excellent, the service slow but considering the crowd and not being in a hurry we had a great meal and a better time. Sorry to leave but with only 4 days in Sydney and so much else to see and do we never did get back, mores the pity!

It wasn't straightforward to find Mr. Wong, as he is hiding in a narrow side-lane and then even didn't have a sign outside, or at least we couldn't see one. So we just guessed when we saw some people lined up outside of a door in a brick wall. Inside appears to have been a huge industrial building converted into a well oiled, smooth running feeding machine. As it appears to always be full to capacity, you are first shunted to a well stocked bar with great aperitifs. After waiting half an hour we started to make noises to passing waitresses, which was effective quickly. Then the menu!!! Absolute divine ! Classical and modern Chinese.

This restaurant is hidden and you have to walk an alleyway to get there, if you don’t pay attention you might pass right by it. I came here by recommendation of a local and you can tell by the waiting line that is a popular place. I highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time. The food is delicious, great flavors and playing some of the classics. Let you waiter guide you they are very knowledgeable and friendly. They have two seatings, a main dinning room on the main floor and a bar and a more ample space downstairs. If you are in Sydney and craving great Chinese food, look no further and come here.

To be pre charged a non refundable $100 per person on booking is a bit rich!! Very efficient on arrival, the atmosphere was good, staff very attentive. The dumplings were good as was the Peking duck and the Wagyu beef was excellent. The Tooth Fish , the Fried rice, the deep fried eggplant and the asparagus were so salty and smothered in so much sauce , which tasted like it came out of a bottle. When we mentioned to the Caucasian waitress that the food was far too salty, her response was that we had chosen 'Salty dishes". When we mentioned the food to the Asian waitress, she was very understanding and diplomatic Not worth the money for very mediocre food, felt like we had been ripped off, will not be returning, do not bother
