The premium Japanese restaurant in Sydney:
We arrived for Friday dinner without a reservation. The reception asked us to wait for about 5-10 minutes before seating us.
The service at the front desk was not very enthusiastic, but our table waiter was very enthusiastic.
The restaurant is affiliated with "Suntory House," making it a great spot for Japanese whiskey lovers, especially those who enjoy Hibiki, Yamazaki, and Hakushu from Suntory. However, the prices are not very budget-friendly! 😂
The food was good, beautifully presented, and tasted good, though not particularly surprising. The atmosphere seemed to be a key focus for patrons.
We enjoyed all the items we ordered. I've included the photos below. The total cost came to A$375 for dinner for two people.

The food was delicious
The staff was so friendly, our waiter Ikram knew how to answer all the questions that we asked in relation to the menu, she was very friendly. Also always smiling. Great customer service, she made our night enjoyable.

Our dining experience at Sokyo was outstanding. From the time
Of our entry until leaving, the service was so friendly, professional and efficient from everyone. Alex was very attentive, provided excellent suggestions, and was so courteous and friendly. The service is so well organised, with staff brining out our plates in a timely manner. Our small salad had a delicious vinaigrette, the fish dishes we tried, including the ceviche, were melt in your mouth flavour, and the chicken was also very tasty. It is a very nice environment and very well designed. As for price, it’s not cheap, but it is entirely worth it, and a fair price overall.

Very poor experience and the case when reviews on TA are grossly misleading. The place offers average food especially for the Japanese restaurant in Australia. Not very far from fast food and no soul in service whatsoever. The waiters are not properly trained and bring next dish while you still progress with the previous… They offer a multi-course menu like fine-dine restaurants but no single dish was tasty. They managed to spoil even oysters with their sauce. Do not spend your precious time on this place.

While the food was prepared well and very good (no issue with food), the Service was the worst I've encountered in Sydney particularly for the price point.
- We waited 20minutes for a server to offer us water let alone alcoholic beverages
- When we ordered wine the server came with the bottle to show us, left the table with the bottle, 10 minutes later we received wine glasses but no wine, the server proceeded to serve other tables. another 20 minutes gone by and we had to get up to get the server to get our wine and serve it.
- Each course that came, we had to ask what they were serving as they took all menus away....we ordered the degustation. Dor each course they served the previous courses plates were left on the table as they served the next course.
- we ordered a second bottle of wine after we had to ask for the wine list. For each wine we ordered the server said they had to go check that they had it (and considering you advertise for "Award winning wine list"). then they brought the incorrect wine and had to correct it.
There are better Japanese restaurants in Sydney with better price points, quality, and SERVICE!

Mixed feelings, some great, some fair.. lost its special touch. Waiters looked stressed and under the pump on a Tuesday evening! Ambience gone drummed out by loud chatter. Also if you are going to charge premium prices please be honest in your serving sizes. Serving us tiny baby rolls for prices ranging from 26-$38 is insane. Way too expensive when there are similar places in Sydney that can serve up similar quality now for half the price. Menu hasn’t changed much in years and most deserts had alcohol.

Arrived 2pm Sat Afternoon. Restaurant 25% full. Waited 20 minutes for any service. Food tumbled out in 10 minutes served by a very softly spoken waitress we couldn't understand. It's disappointing considering other reviews.

food is good.
service, TERRIBLE.....The (seniors) staffs seem to think that we are there to beg them for food and services......
So, for over $200 per head. ( we spend $350p/h)... food is not the priority...as we can certainly get excellent food elsewhere.

This was a truly terrible experience. We had the tasting menu for $185 Per head. It was frenetic. Even before we had finished our tiny portions, the waiters hover around the table and swoop to collect our unfinished portions. Sometimes three attempts are made to bring out the next course before the previous one is finished. Possibility a greedy attempt to onsell the table The food is not terrible but nothing is memorable. The Wagyu tastes like horse. The room temperature is freezing. Avoid this place. It is utterly disappointing.

First sushi experience and canewithout a reservation at 8:30p and the host said the kitchen was backed up and offered me a seat in the dark bar area where there wasn’t many customers.
I asked if there was another place like a sushi bar for 1. The host said the sushi bar was only the sushi counter experience for $215.
When I sat down at the counter there was a lack of acknowledgment from the sushi staff. I sat there quietly for about 10 minutes and wasn’t sure what to do.
It wasn’t until Kimiyo came that she verified I would be getting the sushi counter experience. As I’m not very knowledgable of sake, Kimiyo helped me decide on the Dassai 39 which was a great sake and very easy to drink.
As for the food, the sashimi is terrific and very fresh - tuna, scallop, salmon. The mussel and scallop was also very tender and the umami broth just beautifully went with the dish. The Dengakuman of miso glazed toothfish was similar to black cod but not as fatty. The Wagyu beef dish was quite tender and fancy with the turnip purée. The omakase sushi plate came with 5 different fish- tuna, trout, salmon, snapper. The sushi rice was quite terrible for an upscale sushi restaurant. The rice don’t hold well together and was just disappointing. The fruit macchiato was a nice twist on a berry and whip cream. Really enjoyed the small bits in the cream.
Service: generally would expect more from an upscale restaurant. Didn’t quite feel appreciated as a customer. The saving grace to the experience was Kimiyo. She was very accommodating and even recommended some of her favorite Sydney places.
Overall the food was good Though the sushi was totally overrated. Thankful for Kimiyo for sharing tips around the week.

The whole dinner experience delivered a WOW factor. Every dish was beautifully plated and delicious. The Kingfish Ceviche, beef tenderloin, roasted brussels sprouts and salmon rolls were outstanding. The chocolate cake and caramel macchiato crowned a beautiful dinner. Service was outstanding with Heidi helping us with the menu choice and making us feel very special. Highly recommend it! Will definitely be back! Thank you.

Incredibly intrusive and hostile, especially the Asian male attendant with glasses at the front desk. His arrogant and aggressive attitude makes you sick to the stomach. He is incompetent and keeps offending the patrons. It’s a disgrace. You can’t judge patrons by their appearance and race which is simply unprofessional.
I can’t believe sokyo will put such an incompetent attendant at the front desk which leaves an extremely sour taste upon entering the venue. It spoils everyone’s mood and make the dining experience dreadful.
This place is filled with thugs and gangster wannabes which casts a terrible vibe. There are countless “F” words and swearing from multiple patrons which makes my dining experience miserable. They also openly comment on other patrons with no respect. It’s definitely not an appropriate venue for family dining or dating.
The food is average. You will get better quality sashimi from fish market than sokyo.
There are numerous proper Japanese restaurants in Sydney where you can enjoy your meal in peace without harassment and fear that a gang war would erupt at anytime in front of your eyes, right here at sokyo.
Don’t forget, you will start your meal after enduring enormous nonsense from the dreadful front desk attendant-not sure if you are still in the mood for anything else!

Went on my anniversary as I’m also a staff member. High expectation Very disappointed. Slow service waited 40 min for sushi asked 3 times as the waiter just walk by and don’t care at all. Food also mediocre. Won’t recommend to friends Sydney has other top Japanese restaurant way better then Sokyo. Food not worth the price don’t waste your time going.差差差评 随便哪家悉尼日餐都打败Sokyo 垃圾 服务态度极差 自认为自己很好 其实餐厅死规定 多加个椅子会死人吗?不配啦

Coffee order taken as soon as we were seated as normal. 45mins later after all the food had been served and eaten we still had no coffees.
Asked waiter about them. He didn’t seem to care. No apology, just a we’re doing our best followed by ‘we only have 1 barista’.
For a $50 breakfast marketed as 5 star dining experience that’s not good enough.
Food choices were limited and portions small
Wouldn’t recommend and if you’re staying at the Darling like we were do yourself a favour and get breakfast elsewhere as this we very disappointing and overpriced

Went for Mum's 70th birthday. Food is absolutely delicious albeit a little small in portion. Lovely decor but too dark to see in the evening. Music a little too loud making it hard to communicate with servers. I'm sure there would be enough atmosphere with people chatting away
