Went for Mum's 70th birthday. Food is absolutely delicious albeit a little small in portion. Lovely decor but too dark to see in the evening. Music a little too loud making it hard to communicate with servers. I'm sure there would be enough atmosphere with...people chatting awayMore

Incredibly intrusive and hostile, especially the Asian male attendant with glasses at the front desk. His arrogant and aggressive attitude makes you sick to the stomach. He is incompetent and keeps offending the patrons. It’s a disgrace. You can’t judge patrons by their appearance and...race which is simply unprofessional. I can’t believe sokyo will put such an incompetent attendant at the front desk which leaves an extremely sour taste upon entering the venue. It spoils everyone’s mood and make the dining experience dreadful. This place is filled with thugs and gangster wannabes which casts a terrible vibe. There are countless “F” words and swearing from multiple patrons which makes my dining experience miserable. They also openly comment on other patrons with no respect. It’s definitely not an appropriate venue for family dining or dating. The food is average. You will get better quality sashimi from fish market than sokyo. There are numerous proper Japanese restaurants in Sydney where you can enjoy your meal in peace without harassment and fear that a gang war would erupt at anytime in front of your eyes, right here at sokyo. Don’t forget, you will start your meal after enduring enormous nonsense from the dreadful front desk attendant-not sure if you are still in the mood for anything else!More

We were looking forward to Sokyo for a birthday occasion with family. While our waitress was taking our order, she was looking around and scratching her hand which we thought was a little strange and rude. Ordered cocktails and wine with the Sashimi Share plate...to start. We ended up getting the Tempura Bugs (which is a hot dish) first, even before we had got our drinks. We asked the waitress if she could take it back as we hadn't had our starter yet or even got our drinks. She said that she couldn't do that as she cannot hold food for us. We tried to tell her that it's out of order and that they should just make us a fresh batch after we had our starter, she would not take it back and walked away. It was a birthday celebration, so we didn't want to make a big fuss. Ate the Tempura bugs - which were very nice. Finally got the cocktails - still no wine. The service just really ruined the night. We decided to get dessert somewhere else. The food was pretty good but would not go back. Also, the chairs are way too tall for the tables. We could not even cross our legs and had to bend over to eat - a bit strange.More

This place is so expensive for the small portions. I was so disappointed. Not good variety either for people that don’t eat fish/ seafood. Photo attached was $58 for that plate. Wine so so expensive. Don’t waste your money. Will not return.More

Somewhat disappointed in our Sokyo experience. We had the 7 course tasting menu and although the food is very good (though over-priced). The ambience and service are a problem. The issue we had with service was not that it was slow (like some of the...other reviewers) but that it was really rushed. A tasting menu needs lingering over and some space between the dishes so you don't fill up. Our plates were whisked away literally pretty much as we took our last mouthful and the next course placed in front of us immediately. After the fourth course of this, we asked them to slow down but the fifth course was already there. To be fair, they held the next two courses until we asked for them. But at this price ($200+ each), we shouldn't have to time our own courses. The restaurant decor is modern and tasteful, but the space is open and feels more like a large Chinese Restaurant than an intimate Japanese. It's noisy and we couldn't always hear each other. It was our anniversary, and they did mark that with the decoration of the desert, a nice personal touch. So, a mixed experience but we probably wouldn't go again.More

Always cannot fault this place, although this time they didnt have my usual fine wine by the glass. The Fish ( Sashimi) was outstanding to say the least, the scallop sashimi to die for,the prawn entree amazing as well as the popcorn bug, their miso...soup is one of the best we have ever had. aged pork was ok but highligh sashim and the nigiriMore

This was a truly terrible experience. We had the tasting menu for $185 Per head. It was frenetic. Even before we had finished our tiny portions, the waiters hover around the table and swoop to collect our unfinished portions. Sometimes three attempts are made to...bring out the next course before the previous one is finished. Possibility a greedy attempt to onsell the table The food is not terrible but nothing is memorable. The Wagyu tastes like horse. The room temperature is freezing. Avoid this place. It is utterly disappointing.More

Way too bad. Really disappointed. Should consider going to better competitors such as Nobu, Amuro or Oborozuki. Sokyo is embarassing when comparing to those.More
