Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Had a nice meal here last night. I had the chicken tsukune, the lotus root chips, cauliflower pickles and the tuna belly karaage. Had planned to have more but the portion sizes were huge so that is as far as I got. Loved the chicken...with an onsen egg to dip and the tuna belly was amazing with a light batter, so not at all greasy like karaage can be. Cauliflower was a bit sweet for my taste but lotus chips were nice and crunchy and a good compliment to my drink. I was very happy to see shochu on the menu so I had it with water on the rocks and enjoyed. I am still a bit leery of Covid so I liked their Indoor and outdoor options. I chose to sit at the bar but the front of the restaurant next to me was all open to the outside so I felt safe. Staff were all very friendly and conversational (when they had time, it was Friday night) and responded to any asks very quickly. Only warning is that food came quick, all at once, and was very large portions...next time I will order in stages I think.More

Dropped by for a quick dinner. Great service, mix of flavors, and sake recommendations (#22 for full bodied). Good value for two not too hungry guests.

Went with friends on a Thursday night, was pretty busy but still easy to talk amongst ourselves. The food was amazing and the service was fantastic and very friendly. Our new go to food is the Truffle oil edamame, cauliflower namban, chicken gyoza, wagyu beef...cheek buns, crispy fried calamari. We had a few more dishes as well as desert and enjoyed everything we tried. We will definitely return.More

Highly recommended venue for any occasion, we celebrated my daughter's birthday as she loves Japanese! From start to departure we were warmly looked after, very impressed with the wait staff's sake recommendations - all were phenomenal. Every dish was beautifully flavoured and presented so hard...to choose a favourite. Food was served promptly. Very impressed with quality and freshness of produce - ribs were so tender & juicy, tuna belly fried perfectly, tofu divine and so it went. A delightful evening had by all! Very professional of staff to follow up the next day to check whether we had forgotten a shawl, not many places would bother. One minor detail which didn't affect us - there seemed to be 1 item for dessert - brownie with caramel sauce. We were happy to walk to Messina for ice cream. A must return & already told some of my friends about the place. A big thank you to all at Izakaya Fujiyama!More

The service is excellent. The food is fresh and flavoursome. The sashimi platter was fresh with a great variety of fish and beautiful subtle flavours. The beef cheek buns were to die for while the eggplant with sweet miso and walnut sauce is a taste...sensation. The restaurant has a nice relaxed modern atmosphere. We will definitely go again.More

Best meal we have had there. On their game following return from lockdown. Dinner included truffle edamame, eggplant miso, Wagyu cheek buns, sashimi, grilled tuna belly on the hot rock. All good but some standout delicious moments with the walnuts in the eggplant miso, the...Wagyu cheek buns, & the smokiness of the seared tuna belly was one of the best tasting fish dishes I've ever had.More

Nice local eatery, reasonable service and okay food. Probably need to give it another go before I knock it off my list....but there’s so much competition in Japanese eateries in Surry Hills. Would I rave about it? No.

We have been here several times now, and have found it to be an amazing experience every time! The sashimi is super fresh and Hiro is nothing short of an artist and Kazu sends amazing dishes out from the kitchen. Koji is so knowledgeable about...the drinks menu, particularly the sake. And the best thing overall is that a majority of the menu is safe for celiacs, even the fried chicken! I highly recommend this restaurant.More

I don’t often write reviews however this place is an absolute must! The place felt amazing when you went in, staff were friendly and the food was great as good as SYDNEY has to offer. Definitely recommend to anyone looking for authentic Japanese.

What a fabulous place! Housed on a quiet street with dim lighting, it feels warm & inviting and as soon as you walk in you are greeted warmly. The decor & sake lined walls gives it a Japanese Izakaya feel and of course there's the...food. The menu has such a huge selection of dishes to please all tastes. Start with a selection of refreshing sashimi, which is beautifully presented, fresh and sweet. Move on to one of the many selections of nigiri be it fresh or lightly grilled. Then there is the wagyu beef tataki, beautifully seared, thinly sliced, melting in your mouth with a lovely contrast from a lightly vinagary ponzu dressing. The wagyu cheek buns & tsukune skewers are both a must here. Both are full of flavour, the wagyu cheek melting in your mouth with the perfect balance of meat to fat, encased in a warm, fluffy, ever so slightly sweetened bun. The tsukune is delicious with a nice subtle hint of ginger. Its so flavoursome that the accompanying sauce & egg is not even necessary. Nasu dengaku is ubiquitous on Izakaya menus but here it has been dealt justice. Beautifully charred skin houses a almost creamy centre muddled with miso & topped with crunchy sweet potato chips. Who knew a vegetarian/vegan dish can be this good? And don't forget the hot stone tuna belly which comes sizzling on a hot rock, the fat dripping down & giving the exterior a beautiful crust and flavour. There is a good drinks list to accompany the range of food & the recommendations were all great. Dessert is lovely but the main stars are any of the savoury menu items.More
