About
Ho Jiak Haymarket is Sydney’s first Malaysian Nyonya grill house and is inspired by the homestyle and street food dishes that Head Chef Junda Khoo grew up cooking with his amah in the family kitchen. Feast on thick, spicy Laksa with chewy al dente egg noodles, rated one of the best in Sydney. Or embrace the Nyonya grill with a grilled tasting platter of lamb cutlets, chicken and seafood, complete with BBQ char lines and chilli sambal sauce. The ground floor of the two-story restaurant is inspired by the street Chef Khoo grew up on in Penang, Lebuh Ah Quee. Up on the first floor, the decor is styled like his grandma’s home, a place full of love and laughter. Welcome to Amah’s Kitchen…

Is not the normal Malaysian food you eat here, they provide a more up-market ingredients, definitely a price difference. Picture Ipoh Hor fun with Hainan Chicken $20 Hor fun with pieces of prawns Hainan chicken a bit dry comes with cut chilli and soy sauce. Char Hor Fun with chicken $19 The kuay teow has the original char flavour with the eggy sauce. Nasi lemak with Wagyu Beef $28 The rendang is really niece, beef just melts in your mouth. If you want a Sunnyside up, make sure you request it if not a half boiled is the standard. Anchovies are nice and crispy The above comes with different options E.g. the Char Hor Fun you could choose a different meat to accompany the dish; $33 for King Prawn option and Wagyu Beef at $35. Or the Nasi Lemak; chicken option at $18. Opens daily 11am - 9pm

Came super early, around 3:30, lots of tables. Ordered crispy fish skins, super crunchy, lots of flavour. Then chicken skewers, sauce I found too sweet. Then the char koay teow normal, was good, lots of sauce. Then nasi namak with chicken rendang, it was also very good. Overall, for 2 people I would just order two mains and skip appetizers and everything seemed very salty, very thirsty afterwards.

There has been a few people that has recommended hojiak haymarket and I have finally come to do a review and this will come in 2 parts the entree and the main. This one is the entree and I absolutely love it. What we had was: -Crispy Fish Skin Stir fried crispy fish skin with salted duck egg yolk, butter & curry leaves This was absolutely 100% fantastic! When we saw it and picked it up, it was thin af and very buttery but the salt yolk seemed to be almost non-existent. However went we took that first bite, it was a match made in heaven, We both felt the same way, it was utterly perfect. The crunchiness of it from its thin layering was on point! And the salted duck egg yolk, there was more on it than expected it just bounced straight into my tastebuds like it's known me my whole life! Full of flavour and just kept on getting better and better everytime I take a bite and kept me drooling for more! This was priced at $16 and if they were priced for $20 I would pay for it and eat it! Highly recommend hojiak haymarket! Would come here just for this! 5 out of 5

We dined several times in the years since it opened. When the Town Hall branch opened just into the pandemic, we enjoyed their $10-$12 takeaways and their freeze pack curries. Just recently we dined at the Haymarket branch and it was such a disappointment. The servings were much smaller. We had a char kway teow which had 2 thinly slices of Chinese sausage, 2 also very thinly sliced fish cake and 4 pieces of small prawns which had been originally 2 pieces. At more than $20 for a pimped-up hawker food, the quantity and quality were subpar. A soupy noodle barely had enough soup and just as little ingredients. The service was still very good but we are unlikely to return to for such meagre serves.

After reading rave reviews and seeing a queue outside on a Monday evening, I thought I would give this place a chance. Ordered the regular CKT ($20) - decent serving size, ho-hum taste, pork lard bits were stale/off. Satay entree (6 sticks for $18) order went amiss; had to ask twice if order was coming or not; no apology; taste on par with that at PappaRich where it's way cheaper. Glad I didn't waste my $$$ upgrading any dish with marron, wagyu beef or abalone. Would I come back - definite No! Good luck to those who enjoy and find the food authentic here.

I ordered a Malaysian chicken curry. For $33 (rice was extra) I was served a plate of bony chicken necks with almost no chicken meat. There are a number of excellent and less expensive Malaysian restaurants around Sydney. Avoid this one. My dining companions were also underwhelmed by their meals.

Worst eating experience in my whole life! Late dishes, clueless waitress, rude attitude and Covid-unsafe. For 3 of us the food was delivered 30 min apart. The next door table ordered at the same time and had all dishes delivered before ours. The attendant had no idea now to use the ordering system. We wanted extra chilli sauce and got another sauce. The place was crammed like sardines and not compliant with Covid restrictions. We heard about the Covid voucher match where they give you additional $25. This is a scam! We booked and told the person before we went in. At the end when we were paying they said it needs to be entered into the system in capital letters. False advertising and they could have told us this before we sat down. Instead the lady kept arguing though we needed to leave to get back to work. They've since taken the ad down because they had so many complaints. My lawyer said this is an obvious case of false advertising and we have submitted formal complaints as a result. The food was not that traditional Malaysian and VERY overpriced (you'll others with the same comments), for more genuine version better go to Malacca Straits (cheaper as well).

Reviews for this everywhere else but here are great and warranted. Arrived for an early dinner to a quaint Penang style eatery and ordered ourselves three great dishes. Servings were ample (took some home from the table), staff helpful and considerate and the food was scrumptious. I think the line up to get In the place as we were leaving confirms I’m not the only one who will be coming back soon.

Walked past this place and went back to try it. On the first night we tried char kway teow, crispy fish skin, satay and the nasi lemak.Fish skin was excellent and the sauce complemented it nicely. The satay was cooked over charcoal as advertised however I found the sauce a little bit tasteless. The other dishes were very good. It can be a tight squeeze and the prices are quite expensive but I don't mind paying for good food. It was so good my partner wanted to go back the next day for lunch! Worth a visit but it can get very busy so booking is advisable.

The restaurant requires punctuality,. says they will charge for non attendance & gives a 90 minute dining period. We arrived on time & was seated in the upstairs area. We were the fist party to be seated as they had just opened that area. After 10 minutes we ordered drinks & appetizers then our mains. Drinks were served within 10 minutes. Appetizers arrived after 20 minutes & were tasty. However then everything fell apart. Mains arrived one at a time over the next hour, When each was served the meal was just warm & rice was gluggy. When we asked why things were taking so long we were told the downstairs was full & busy. So that basically says your meals come second to down stairs. After being at the restaurant for 2 hours we left with 2 out of the 6 main meals in takeaway containers as they had just been served. In other words tow people had not eaten their meals. The front of house staff were not the problem, the kitchen was yet they were left facing complaints not only from us but also from other customers who had the same issues. No discount was offered, we left all never to return again.

Went to Ho Jiak with friends. This is the worst experience ever. Food was over an hour and 20 min late. Food came out warm not hot and all at different times. Some finished food before others got their main course. The management are pathetic and can’t manage their restaurant. They don’t care about their customers at all. The expect their customers to arrive on time and finish within 90min but the staff/ restaurant can’t even deliver the food within that time. They say it’s busy downstairs but that’s just an excuse for bad management and chefs. Another table equally agreed with the sentiments at the time. If you want a good experience you will want to ignore this restaurant. It’s so badly managed with cold , ordinary food. If you were management you’d try to fix the problem and value your customers. The manager didn’t give a proverbial. Very disappointing! Don’t bother here!

We came here as we read great reviews about the restaurant. Let's start off with the positives. The service is good and ambience is nice. Unfortunately, the food wasn't authentic and it's more like an overpriced fusion food. Being a Malaysian, the taste just doesn't hit the mark for us. There are many better Malaysian restaurants in Sydney, so this will be our first and last time there.

I have read numerous raving reviews about this restaurant and decided to give it a try. Walked in today for lunch and ordered their signature dish of Hainan Fried Chicken rice and teh tarik. The chicken rice came with chicken dish heavily coated with gooey black pepper sauce. It was not a pleasant tasting dish. Ho Jiak won't be my choice of restaurant to go.

We used eat here occasionally before lockdown and missed it so much we ordered delivery this week in lockdown. Oh my god, every dish was amazing and travelled so well. We needed a pick me up so we over ordered. Everything was delicious, I can’t recommend anything in particular because it was all too good.

For someone in search of authentic Malaysian food, I am impressed. Went back twice in 3 days. Some dishes are enhanced with international influence (e.g. nasi goreng wagyu), but I chose and loved the following traditional ones: 1) laksa with chicken and prawn 2) char kuey teau with duck egg 3) hor fun 4) pie tee 5) ais kacang (desert) 6) ais chendol (desert). Price is a bit high but it reflects the big serving quantity. Chili sauces (green, sambal, sweet) are generous and genuinely tasty (many asian restaurants served diluted chili sauces). Service is fast and polite.
