A famous food truck / cafe serving iconic meat pies in the Woolloomooloo district of Sydney. We stopped by for a quick bite on a Monday around lunch time.
Like a food truckk (although this place is stationary-more like a vendor booth at a fair or carnival) the menu consists of meat pies, pastiess (similar) and hot dogs. There are also chips (fries) and drinks for sale. We had heard from several people that we needed to try their meaat pies so I got the chicken and mushroom and my wife got tHe pepper beef. We also added a scoop of mashed potatoes and gravy on top. There's also the option to add smashed peas which with the potatoes and gravy is called tiger style.
The pastry was crispy and the food piping hot. We stood at a bit of the counter and ate them with our sporks. Tasty and quite filling and an Australian institution.

A coworker insisted that my family try the "meat pies with mushy peas" at Harry's Cafe de Wheels in Woolloomooloo. I wasn't sure we'd like it but we walked over from our hotel by the Opera House (very nice walk) and got one to share. Everyone really liked it. We ended up buying 2 more and going back again on our last night in Sydney. It was fun to try something new and local and is a nice break from restaurants on vacation.

This pie cart is a bit of a Sydney institution, a quirky curiosity, and actually a fairly decent spot to grab a quick and tasty bite to eat. It’s been around for about 80 years, down by Finger Wharf and the naval dockyards of Woolloomooloo in Sydney. Harry ‘Tiger’ Edwards started a pie cart there in 1936, selling his pies to customers from the naval dockyards. After a bit of a hiatus due to WWII, he returned with his pie caravan in 1945 and has been selling to sailors, celebrities, locals and visitors ever since!
The signature dish is the meat pie, specifically the ‘Tiger’ - your choice of pie topped with mashed potato, mushy pies and gravy.
As expected, the menu is all about the meat pie, with some nine different pies to choose from: mince beef, chunky beef, curry beef, chicken, vegetable, pepper, and so on. There’s also hot chips, with a number of different toppings such as meatballs and gravy, and chilli. There’s various hot dogs on offer, as well as a selection of bread rolls filled with the likes of meatballs, roast chicken, roast beef and pulled pork. The options for vegans and vegetarians seems very limited indeed. The kiosk does not appear to serve alcoholic beverages, with drinks limited to soda, milkshakes and coffee.
The kiosk was doing a brisk trade on the Sunday evening of our visit, even though it’s actually not in a high footfall tourist area.
Our party of three ordered two ‘Tigers’ and one with just the mash and gravy. The ‘Tigers’ cost $10.20; adding hot chips and a drink to that was an extra $7.00. The pies were good; whilst they didn’t come close to the best meat pies I’ve ever eaten, they were hot, tasty and fresh. With the hot chips, it’s all quite a substantial meal. There’s some seating around the kiosk, and it was very pleasant sitting outside to enjoy our ‘wheels’ meal, overlooking the water.
It’s a bit of a fun concept, and a bit of quirky thing to do if you are looking for something different to experience whilst in Sydney. We walked through the Royal Botanic Gardens to get there from Circular Quay. I’m not sure what the public transport options are for getting to the cafe.

Clearly Harry is gone ages ago! Just a franchise now.
Expensive hot dogs with really bad costumer service. Milk shake is ok...
Order hot dogs to a woman in a very bad mood and had bad idea to order one with cheese.
The cheese was frozen and when asked why, I got a very rude reply from the zombie lady behind the counter.
Nothing especial about this place... only good for tourists to take a picture... ( well, when they come back)

This has become an iconic place to go with a fascinating list of past clientele and rich in history.
Talking of history it was started by a fruit-truck driver Harry “Tiger” Edwards who opened the original Harry’s caravan in 1945 near Woolloomooloo’s Garden Island naval dockyard to provide sailors, wharfies and socialites with late-night pies and crumbed sausages.
In 2004 the stall was recognised with a heritage listing from the National Trust as a place of cultural and historic interest for future Australians.
So it’s a local legend.
But it was taken over in 2018 with grand ambitions from the new Owner.
For example they want to open more than 100 Harry’s locations around Australia with radical (but necessary) changes to the menu etc.
Great idea but ... the food experience ultimately still counts!
So with all this going on I gave it a try and frankly the Food isn’t very good.
The sausage in the Hot Dog was bland and looked processed and lacked flavour.
The stodgy bun was equally unappetising.
The circling birds were in for a treat!
It’s frustrating as it has so much going for it but they have to improve the quality of the Food.
Do that and the legend will live on.

Treat yourself to a Tiger Pie... rich succulent pie topped with creamy mashed potato and mush peas all smothered with a rich gravy. Absolutely divine and excellent value for money. Down by the naval base too so some nice views.

Long before arriving in Sydney I heard stories about Harry's. You know how sometimes it's bad to meet a legend, that you end up disappointed? No chance of that with Harry's! It was just a couple blocks from our hotel (Mariner's Court) so my travel companion and I stopped more than once. We always ordered something different from each other so we could sample. Nothing. Let me repeat...NOTHING...disappointed! Please don't ask me to recommend something specific because my answer would have to be "all of it". Maybe even better (if possible) than the food is the staff. Welcoming and patient with non-stop questions from first timers. Bottom line... If you don't make Harry's part of your visit to Sydney you haven't experienced one of the best attractions.

What??? You used to be so good! Staff have always been not so friendly but the food was yummy so I figured its just because they are so busy. So I ordered my old favorite... A Cafe De Wheels hot dog with mash & peas with chili sauce. The bread is no longer got that fresh softness I remember, they must have changed to a cheaper hotdog and all the topping were simply cold! The birds enjoyed it though. I didnt get my drink that I paid for and the same lady argued that she gave it to me. She litterally made me pay for another one since I was not given a receipt to prove my purchase. Just saying, I have brought dozens of people to this place and so on and so on but after that, this is the only story ill be telling from now on. Perhaps franchising was not such a hot move. Think the founders are sitting back like fat cats and forgetting they have a reputation to uphold. Legacy!

You can get reasonably priced high quality pies here and their hot dogs are still good after so many years.
The service isn't that great but not expected at a takeaway joint like this. The area does smell a bit too from the bins nearby but you can sit away from the store where the smells are not present.
The chips were tasty and their famous tiger pie was good.
Worth a try if you are around the area as everything else around the place is ultra expensive.

well. I am writing to follow up on the incident that occurred on November 15, 2023, where I found a bone in a pie purchased at your establishment, resulting in damage to my tooth. I previously reported this matter in a letter dated 16/11/23 addressed to Harry de Wheels.
To date, I have not received a response from Mr. de Wheels, and I am concerned about the lack of communication. As a customer, expected a timely and professional resolution to the incident.
Unfortunately, the lack of acknowledgment and information has left me feeling distressed and uncertain about the steps being taken to address the matter.
Send letter from Denest to Alex but no follow up

The pie was dray with absolutely no liquid sauce/gravy inside. Pastry was hard. Pie was not very hot. Chips had so much salt on them (did not ask for salt by the way) that they were inedible. I gave it a second chance and then had a pulled pork roll with onions. Must have been a shortage of pork that day and all I could taste were the onions. I hope tourists do not Judge Sydney by this travesty of fast/street food. Never again...

I have had breakfast here (Tiger) last 20 years however; on the 18/02/2022 the pie, mash and peas were only lukewarm. The Pepsi on the other hand was hot! The lady at the time was indifferent at the least to my comments on this and walked away through our conversation. How rude! This particular lady (Term loosely used) I have noticed before on Saturday does have a poor customer service skills.
My Saturday breakfast will from now on be somewhere different.
Sad after 20 years.

Absolutely recommend this.
If you don't fancy sitting down in a restaurant and just need to grab some food (especially later at night), have a bit of a break and then move on, the Harry's - Cafe on Wheels is the best option.
We had a Hot Dog de Wheeles, the Feta and Spinach roll, the Apple Bites and Thickshake. It was a lot of food and very tasty.
Friendly, quick service and good price for what you get.

This iconic pie stand provides classic Australian (UK-inspired) meat pies and the like. It seems like one of those places that is a great equalizer, where all types of people come for a quick pie. The Tiger Pie is very good (and is of course not actually tiger)!

When I first visited Australia 30yrs ago I fell in love with meat pies and I have been craving a good pie ever since! Harry’s did not disappoint. My pie was so favourful and the pastry was next level. It is a ‘do not miss’ place if you are looking for pie and I’m likely to visit every day I’m in the city….
