A Sydney gem. I wish there were more of this not only in Sydney, but around the country. You’ll surely find something you like, but my favourite thing here (may sound silly) is the $1.50 wings at Old Jim Kee! Special shout-out to the roti beef rendang at Alex Lee kitchen also. Place is packed between 7-8pm. No need to bring cash as they only accept card/paywave which I love.

My husband and I happened upon Spice Alley on our weekend away in Sydney. Set primarily in what was once the backyards of original Sydney houses, there are plenty of affordable Asian eaters to explore, from Chinese, to Malaysian, Japanese to Indonesian.
My husband and I decided on a ramen each at Ky-oto, which was very reasonably priced at $13.80 a bowl. I had the Shoyu ramen, and my husband had the garlic. We also ordered a side of Edamame.
We were quite hungry when we arrived, and our meals were so delicious, yet so filling, that we were unable to finish them.
The atmosphere in Spice Alley is so welcoming and cosy, even on a chilly night.
We will definitely be back on our next trip to Sydney.

Food is good, place is busy, many things have been written about it, so I’ll write about parts that is maybe not as common. The Alex Lee kitchen, which is the first restaurant you see when you come in (the one with the roti plates), serves peanuts as part of the plate. For people with allergies, this would be really bad. They also charged me for 2 roti plates and only gave me one, when I asked about my second plate, they said I only ordered one. I checked my credit card account later, there was clearly charge for 2 plates, too late to argue over this now. When you order, it’s card only but they charge you a mandatory fee like many said, and you get a order number (without any mention of types of item ordered), hence you have to trust that they gave you the food you ordered. Also very hard for you to wait at various stalls for food. Some people eating near us were waiting the whole dinner for their plates that they ordered. It’s very busy, but be careful not to get overcharged

Met up with a group of ex work buddies for a lunch, the location was selected upon a recommendation from one of the team that had eaten here previously. It had been raining for most of the morning so it was not really packed out, most of the chairs and tables were still wet and had not been wiped down, after a bit of seat swapping and table shuffling we managed to find enough to save getting wet bottoms.
Large families or groups may have trouble sitting together on a busy day as it is a first come first served basis and no bookings are available to reserve. The location is near the southern end of central station and UTS/Tafe area on George St.
The food is nothing special just Asian fast food. The prices are OK with $10 daily specials (nothing special). Most of the meals took about 15 mins to collect and I think it would be long wait when busy.
NB it is card only venue, and a surcharge is applied to each transaction that you are only made aware of when you are paying. You are able to convert cash to card at the pay station (not sure what you get hit for on that as we did not use it).
Was it worth the walk from Central Station? No, not really. There are numerous Asian eateries at this end of town with similar pricing and if not better variety and quality. Groups would be better of in a local Chinese eatery and all seated together in comfort and out of the weather. The convenience is that various Asian styles are in one location. Would I go there again? Probably not unless I happened to be in the area, I would not bother to make it a destination of choice.

We were very excited by the great reviews and were horribly underwhelmed by the experience. Most of the employees were bored or rude. Selected the Indian street food stall and the food was “okay” not great. Small portions and they were rude about serving tap water. The food stalls seemed commercial not authentic. Seems they have received so much publicity that they lost their uniqueness.

Was so looking forward to Indian tonight.
Great location. Terrible tasteless food. Butter Chicken tastelessđź‘Ž Dahl tasteless no flavour and was very very watery. The Naan on the other hand was 8/10 đź‘Ť. Did I mention no flavour. I don't think I have ever had worse.
Whoever person is front of house might need a holiday, seemed annoyed we wanted to order food.
Honeslty don't bother, you will waste your money. Go elsewhere.
Read other reviews as well... I wish I had.

No, it is not the best Asian cuisine. But it is worth at least one visit to experience what all the hoopla is all about. There is really nothing special here considering it is Asian fast food. The place is packed. Big families or groups should be prepared to eat in smaller groups as availability of seats is hard to find.

We tried this on a recommendation from our Uber driver.
I thought the concept was great. The little secluded shops and seats just felt very authentic and made me feel I was back in Asia.
My partner would be the expert critic. And he liked his food but said it wasn't the best he'd ever had. My food was also ok but then I'm not a big fan of Asian cuisine.
I think you get value for money. But probably best to adjust expectation on quality. It's street food.
The other detractor was the disposable plates, bowls and utensils. Not very environmentally friendly. And the wood-based fork I used meant every mouthful included the taste of balsa wood. Not great.
Overall, though, not too bad.

Spicy Alley reminds me a little of the Singapore hawker centres. The lane has small stalls down the full length serving everything from full meals to snacks and drinks. It was our first time visiting Spicy Alley and it won’t be our last. If you love Gin you must try Gin Lane.

Was excited to finally try this place out during an overnight stay in Sydney. Loved the overall feel of the alley with lots of eateries to choose from and a stand where you can buy a beer to have with dinner. Had some dumplings from Shangai's first and they were good. Bit expensive for what you get though. Then tried the Kecap manis squid from Ginger and Spice. Based on the menu photo above the counter we thought the actual serve looked like about half what we expected and no crispy noodles as per the photo. Apparently they don't serve those anymore? (Well, change the photo!) The squid was battered and so bland you wouldn't have known what you were eating ....if you didn't order it. At nearly $10 it was an absolute rip-off dish. Definitely wouldn't eat from that business again. Will try the other options next time but overall we walked away disappointed and feeling that value for money was sought elsewhere.

This bustling little alley has multiple Asian street food restaurants within its confines. As you get closer to the alley - named such, we'll, because it's an actual alley, the aroma of curry and allspice becomes almost palpable. The walls of alley itself features several Asian restaurants that focus on their speciality of street food, while the middle of the alley provides seating, much like a mall food court.
I went with the Malaysian Mamak Mee Goreng and the Penang Char Kway Teo for the wife. The mamak was lovely - the hokkien noodles had a fresh sweet taste which was perfectly matched by the garlic, tomatoes, onion, soy, chiles, chicken and tofu, along with a dozen other ingredients my uneducated tongue has left out. The wife wasn't into sharing her Penang, and there was nothing left on the plate. Prawns on flat noodles with
Fish cake, soy, bean sprouts, and egg and sausage made this dish absolutely yummo.
We got all of this from the Old Jim Lee stand, but you really can't go wrong here. Definitely a must see!

Lunch date with my partner. Been awhile since we've been out to Spice Alley Sydney.
We were looking for some great Asian Spicy food and we were not let down.
Plenty to choose from as there are a number of different vendors, we had Malaysian style this time around easy enough to view what was available and the price, found our little table in the sun, got a few drinks and a side of dumplings as well.
Wasn't long before our number got called up and we were into it.
Great feed and value for money.
Will return and choose something different as it all looks great.

Great place for a meal on the fly; I have eaten there several times and never had a disappointing meal. The Japanese is consistently good. Don't expect 2 Hat standards, it is just a fun, cheap and cheerful place to meet friends, enjoy great atmosphere and eat ample size serves for reasonable prices. There have been complaints about prices, understand these people are in business to make a living, not just there to serve up meals for the public's benefit, give them a break and stop being precious about $1.00+.

We waited at Kyo-to in Spice Alley on a winters night and waited over 40 mins for food that didn’t arrive. Went a few times to ask where it was. Finally asked for a refund and went somewhere else. Not recommended.
