Disappointing atmosphere for such an iconic club. There was no one on the desk when we arrived which it would have been nice to be greeted. There was a long line to order before you could even be seated. The waitress was rude and patronising....Finally after eaiting an hour our food arrived which was the usual pub fair and nothing special. The ambience was like being at a TAB with some bloke yelling out the score of the footy match being played ner the bar. There was no German music or sense that you were at the German Club. The club was founded by proud Germans who came to help build Canberra in the 1950s and 1960s. The place really needs a spruce up and care taken to ensure the history of the place is preserved. It is shocking and sad that the original piece of the Berlin Wall is hidden and the sign gone into disrepair...if you didnt know it was there you would totally miss it. A disgrace.More

The interior of this restaurant needs urgent refurbishment. Much it is faded and marked. We were there on a warm, not hot, night. The interior was stifling and very unpleasantly hot. Thank goodness it wasn’t a hot night. The menus presented were dirty and in...poor condition, which should never happen, let alone with Covid-19 being ever present. We were keen to have a try of their schnitzels which are listed on the menu under‘Schnitzel Heaven’. Between us we had a combination of different ones. The veal ones were not really veal and were quite tough. The chicken ones were also tough, which is quite hard to do with chicken. Definitely not from ‘heaven’. The accompanying chips were soft on the inside, but unfortunately, also soft on the outside. For desert some apple strudels were ordered. After thirty minutes we inquired if they had been forgotten. We were told no, but they finally arrived another fifteen minutes later. The noise level was extremely high and it was very difficult to hear what someone on the other side of the table was saying. The only redeeming feature was the very obliging, professional and friendly staff. Overal , we would suggest avoiding this restaurant.More

This place is great! The atnosphere is chilled, authentic good size meals at a reasonable price. Good service and the setting is great, somewhat out dated but gives the club a nice welcoming feel.

With German heritage we will always try any German restaurant when travelling. We were told not to book ( by a local Canberrian ) as it was not that busy. Wrong. They we’re booked out but the friendly and helpful staff told us to find...a table downstairs and they would feed us! Ended up sitting at a table like Oma’s under the puzzle of Neuschwanstein castle, right near the sign down to Opa’s Keller. Flashbacks to childhood. No where near fine dining but a descent take on the cuisine. Let downs we’re the “pork loin” being ham steaks / spam? The plastic gravy/mustard containers made it feel like we we’re having take away. Descent value. Would not rush back though.More

I have a long happy association with the German Club. My father is an early member and I actually worked in this restaurant more than 30 years ago so I think of it fondly. I attend a regular function in the club so eat the...restaurant food at least twice a year albeit as part of a function menu although always the German options. We had an enjoyable meal as a party of 5 with schnitzels and pork knuckles and all were eaten with gusto (although the fussy German cook reckons hers as better!) None the less, all were polished off! However, there was one serious fail. One of our party has a serious nut allergy. She always checks with food that might have nuts but German food (apart from cakes) is not known for its nuts and the meal chosen - pork belly, had no nut description on the menu. It however arrived liberally sprinkled with pistachios which is one of her high allergy nuts. In this modern day and age, menus MUST have nuts described on them. The staff apologised and recooked the meal (just scraping them off doesn't work) however I will be looking at the menu next time to see if this has been adjusted, its really important that this is fixed as this is a life and death issue.More

The restaurant was extremely busy, but we were seated with minimum of fuss and generous spacing between tables to make conversation at our table easy. The menus offered a great variety of choices - not all German in heritage. Ordering is at the front of...the restaurant, but the meals were delivered promptly - especially considering how busy it was - and the portion sizes were very generous. Each of the meals at our table were delicious. The wait staff were friendly and efficient making the experience all the more enjoyable.More

The 3 of us had the ultimate German feast for 2 to 3 people with 2 sides. The highlight was the pork knuckle but the feast also included many other menu items that were equally delicious. The price included 2 beers that helped wash down...the copious quantity of food. As a good pommy my wife had a gin and tonic. Fortunately we had skipped lunch and were able to eat everything. The service was very good and the club has a unique and friendly ambience. We will definitely go again as I want to try the rouladen.More

Went a few weeks ago and pork knuckle was great, but I was very disappointed with the butterscotch schnapps affogato dessert I paid $15 for. After waiting more than half an hour, I went to ask the kitchen where it was because everyone was waiting...to leave. They brought it out and all I got was 2 small scoops of vanilla ice-cream and a shot of schnapps on the side. I feel like I should have just ordered the schnapps.More
